[Ningshui Shi]
Taste: Acrid, Sweet. Nature: Cold, Great Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Mainly treats body heat, accumulation of pathogenic qi in the abdomen, skin lesions resembling burning and rotting, irritability and fullness; taken with water. Removes excessive heat from seasonal epidemics, latent heat in the five zang organs, heat in the stomach, irritability and fullness, thirst, edema, and bi-syndrome of the lower abdomen. Long-term use prevents hunger. Also known as Baishui Shi (White Water Stone), Hanshui Shi (Cold Water Stone), and Lingshui Shi (Ice Water Stone). The color resembles mica; those that can be split into layers are considered superior, as they are the essence of salt. Grows in the valleys of Changshan, also found in Zhongshui County and Handan.
Resolves Radicis Codonopsis (Baidu) toxicity; incompatible with Radix Sanguisorbae (Diyu). Changshan refers to Hengshan, belonging to Bingzhou. Zhongshui County belongs to Hejian Commandery. Handan is Zhao Commandery, both belonging to Jizhou Prefecture. The soil here is saline-alkaline, hence it is called the essence of salt, and when crushed, it resembles Glauber's Salt (Puxiao). When the powder of this stone is placed in water, it forms ice in summer, which is considered excellent.
[Commentary]
Horizontal grain is preferred, especially those with clear and bright coloration.
Some say vertical grain is Hanshui Shi, while horizontal grain is Ningshui Shi.
Currently produced in Hancheng, Tongzhou, those with yellow-green color and mica-like grain are superior; those from Chengcheng with oblique grain and white coloration are inferior.
[Shigao]
Taste: Acrid, Sweet. Nature: Slightly Cold, Great Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Mainly treats wind-stroke with alternating cold and fever, rebellious qi under the heart causing palpitations and panting, dry mouth and scorched tongue, inability to breathe comfortably, hard and painful abdomen, expels evil spirits, treats postpartum conditions, and metallic wounds.
Removes seasonal epidemic heat, headache, body heat, excessive heat in the Sanjiao, skin heat, diaphragmatic heat in the intestines and stomach, releases the muscle layer to induce sweating, stops thirst, irritability and rebellion, abdominal distension, sudden asthma, and throat heat; can also be used for bathing decoctions. Also known as Xishi (Fine Stone); those with fine, white, and lustrous grain are superior, while yellow ones may cause strangury. Grows in the valleys of Qishan, Qilushan, and Lumengshan; harvest time is unrestricted.
Egg white acts as an assistant drug; adverse reaction with Aconitum carmichaelii (Mangcao) and Du Gong. The mountains of these two commanderies refer to Qingzhou and Xuzhou. Currently produced in Qiantang County, found underground, emerging naturally after rain; harvested pieces are square like chess pieces, with transparent white being best. These are rare; usually, those from Xuyin Mountain are used. Those from Pengcheng are also good. Although abundant near the road, the large blocks are not as effective as those from that region. The Immortal Classics do not require this herb.
[Commentary] Shigao and Fangjie Shi are largely similar, distinguished by whether they are unbroken.
Currently, large pieces are like a sheng (unit of measure), small ones like fists; some are in the soil, others grow by streams. Their surfaces change color with soil and algae; they split open upon breaking, with large pieces reaching one chi square. People currently mistake this for Shigao; while treating wind and removing heat is similar, its ability to release the muscle layer and induce sweating is inferior to true Shigao.
