[Jingtian (Sedum aizoon)]
Bitter and sour in taste, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats fire sores caused by severe heat, fever with restlessness, and invasion by evil qi. It treats various gu poisons, crusted sores, wind-bi syndrome alternating between cold and heat, and various deficiencies. The flowers treat leukorrhea (red and white discharge) in women, make the body feel light, and improve vision. Long-term consumption promotes spiritual clarity and anti-aging. Also known as Jiehuo (Fire-Restraining), Huomu (Fire Mother), Jiuhuo (Fire-Saving), Juhuo (Fire-Holding), and Shenhuo (Fire-Precaution). Grows in the valleys of Mount Tai. Harvested on the 4th day of the 4th lunar month and the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, then dried in the shade.
Currently, people grow it in pots on rooftops, claiming it wards off fire. The leaves can treat traumatic injuries from metal weapons and stop bleeding; bathing children with it removes restlessness, heat, and frightful qi. Outside Guangzhou city, there is a tree said to be three or four zhou (circumference units) thick, called Shenhuo Tree. The variety from Jiangdong is very small. It is rarely used in prescriptions. Its flowers are used for dietary therapy. Among the names of various herbs, this one is the most ornate.
[Tianmingjing (Sonchus arvensis / Sonchus asper)]
Sweet in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic. It treats blood stasis, dangerous conditions due to blood masses (Xuejia), hematochezia, stops bleeding, promotes urination, eliminates intestinal parasites, dispels bi-syndrome, clears heat accumulation in the chest, and relieves thirst and restlessness. It induces profuse vomiting and diarrhea to expel water retention. Long-term consumption makes the body light and delays aging. Also known as Maijujiang, Xiamalan, Shishou, Tianmenjing, Yumenjing, Zhilu, Chanxulan, and Jin. Grows in plains and marshes, harvested in May. Yuan yi (moss/lichen on walls) serves as its guiding herb. This is what people now call [missing character], also named [missing character] shou. In summer, the juice is extracted and taken orally to clear heat diseases. The taste is extremely bitter, yet described as sweet, which is likely incorrect.
[Note]: This is Luhuocao. *Bielu* states it is also known as Tianmanjing; southerners call it Disong. Because it tastes pungent and sweet, it bears the name "Jiang"; its shape resembles Indigofera (Lan), hence the name Xiamalan; its fragrance resembles orchids, hence the name Chanxulan.
It treats blood breaking, tissue regeneration, thirst relief, promotion of urination, killing of three types of parasites, elimination of various toxic swellings, ding sores, hemorrhoids, deep penetrating traumatic injuries, and persistent pruritus with urticaria; rubbing it on the affected area brings immediate relief. Its root is bitter and foul-smelling, whereas the part named "Jing" is pungent and fragrant; they are completely dissimilar.
