[Platycladus Orientalis Wood]
Taste: Bitter. Nature: Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Treats stagnant Qi and heat in the five Zang organs and intestines/stomach, jaundice, intestinal hemorrhoids, stops diarrhea and dysentery, treats leukorrhea (abnormal vaginal discharge) with red or white discharge in women, and sores on the yin and yang regions. Treats frightful Qi lodged between the skin and muscles, causing hot, red, and raised skin eruptions; hot, red, and painful eyes; and mouth ulcers. Long-term consumption promotes spiritual clarity. Another name: Tan Huan. Root: Named Tan Huan, treats thirst. Long-term consumption lightens the body, extends life, and promotes spiritual clarity.
Habitat: Mountain valleys in Hanzhong and Yongchang.
Contraindications: Incompatible with Dried Lacquer (Gan Qi). Current varieties from Shaoling are superior if thin/light and dark-colored. Varieties from Dongshan are dense/heavy and pale-colored. Its root is classified as "Wood Mushroom" (Mu Zhi) in Daoist pharmacopeia, but people nowadays do not know to collect and consume it. There is another small tree resembling Pomegranate (Shi Liu). Its bark is yellow and bitter, commonly called Zi Bai, also treating mouth ulcers. Another small tree is very thorny, with yellow bark, also treating mouth ulcers.
[Note]: Zi Bai, also known as Shan Shi Liu, has fruits similar to Ligustrum lucidum (Nv Zhen), white non-yellow bark, and is also called Xiao Bai, found everywhere. The description of yellow bark is likely erroneous. Examining current folk usage, "Zi Bai" refers to thorny small trees named Ci Bai (Juniperus formosana), not Xiao Bai.
[Xin Yi / Magnolia Flower]
Taste: Acrid (Pungent). Nature: Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Treats wind-cold invading the five Zang organs and body, head wind pain, brain pain, facial swelling, warms the middle Jiao and releases the muscle layer, unblocks the nine orifices, treats nasal congestion with rhinorrhea, facial swelling radiating toothache, dizziness, vertigo, and a sensation of swaying as if on a boat or carriage. Promotes growth of beard and hair, removes Ascaris lumbricoides (white worms). Long-term consumption directs Qi downward, lightens the body, brightens the eyes, increases lifespan, and delays aging. Can be used for plasters. Preparation: Remove the center and outer hairs; hairs entering the lungs cause coughing. Other names: Xin Shen, Hou Tao, Fang Mu. Habitat: River valleys in Hanzhong. Harvest: Collect fruits in September, dry in sun.
Interactions: Guided by Xiong Qiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong); incompatible with Wu Shi Zhi (Five Minerals Clay); adverse reaction with Chang Pu, Pu Huang, Huang Lian, Shi Gao, Huang Huan. Current variety from near Danyang resembles peaches, locally called Xin Ti.
[Note]: This material is collected when the flower buds have not yet opened; January and February are good times for collection. The statement that fruits are collected in September is likely an error. The tree is large, trunk girth exceeding one embrace, height several ren (ancient unit), leaves larger than Persimmon leaves, found everywhere. The fruit smells foul and is unsuitable for medicine. Formulas state to remove hairs and use the heart, which is hard to obtain and may cause acne on the face. Currently, open flowers are used, which are easy to obtain and fragrant.
