[Leaf of Toona sinensis] Bitter in flavor, toxic. Primarily used to wash sores and scabies, wind-based abscesses; boil the leaves to extract juice for application. The bark is used for [Gan KT] (textual anomaly). The roots and leaves of the Chum tree (Toona ciliata) are particularly effective. The two trees resemble each other in shape; the distinction lies in the fact that the Chum tree has loose grain, while the Chun tree (Toona sinensis) has dense grain. (Newly added)
[Pepper from Shu] Pungent in flavor, greatly warm, non-toxic. Primarily used to direct Qi downward, warm the Middle Jiao, eliminate phlegm, and dispel wind-cold from the Zang-Fu organs. Grows in the Western Regions; its shape resembles that of a mouse plum. Used in food preparation, it tastes very pungent and delicious, though its aromatic quality does not reach that of Sichuan pepper. (Newly added)
[Acorn/Oak Fruit] Bitter in flavor, slightly warm, non-toxic. Primarily used to treat diarrhea, thicken the intestines and stomach, and promote robust health and weight gain. Its shell can be made into powder or boiled for decoction to treat diarrhea, and it is also suitable for dyeing. Among them, those from the Oak tree are superior. They grow in valleys everywhere. (Newly added)
[Bark of Tamarix] Bitter in flavor, warm, non-toxic. Primarily used to treat bloody and white dysentery, intestinal slippage, and promote muscle growth. Originates from the Western Regions. It is said to grow in sandy deserts, with a tree shape resembling Tamarix. (Newly added)
[Leaf of Kongshu] Bitter in flavor, cold, toxic. Primarily used for carbuncles and malignant sores; boil the leaves to extract juice and wash the sores for immediate healing. Grows among fences and walls. Also known as Kongshu, found everywhere. (Newly added)
[Seed of Sophora japonica / Huaijiao] Sweet and bitter in flavor, neutral, non-toxic. Primarily used for hemorrhoids, stopping bleeding, treating bloody dysentery, relieving thirst, and can be used for pulse moxibustion. [Dragon Bone / Longgu] Sweet in flavor, neutral and slightly cold, non-toxic. Primarily used for Gui Zhu (ghostly afflictions) in the heart and abdomen, spirit possessions, old demons, cough with reversed Qi, dysentery with pus and blood, leukorrhea in women, hard accumulations of Zheng Jia (masses), pediatric heat-induced convulsions and epilepsy, treating fullness and oppression in the heart and abdomen, flaccidity and atrophy of the four limbs, sweating, spontaneous fright during sleep, anger, latent Qi lodged under the heart causing inability to breathe, intestinal abscesses, internal carbuncles, yin erosion, stopping sweating, promoting urination, treating hematuria, nourishing the spirit, stabilizing the soul, and calming the Five Zang organs. White Dragon Bone treats nocturnal emission and seminal leakage during urination; Dragon Teeth treat convulsions and epilepsy in children and adults, mania and running wild, Qi knotting under the heart causing inability to breathe, various spasms, and killing spirit entities. It treats five types of fright and twelve types of epilepsy in children, body heat making one untouchable, alternating cold and heat in the bones of adults, and kills Gu poison. It works well with Ginseng and Calculus Bovis, but is incompatible with Gypsum Fibrosum. Horns treat fright and epilepsy, spasms, body heat like fire, abdominal hardness, and hot diarrhea. It is incompatible with Dried Lacquer, Sichuan Pepper, and Schorl. Long-term use lightens the body, enhances spiritual clarity, and prolongs life. It grows in the valleys of Jin territory, and in rock crevices, water banks, soil caves in Mount Tai, and places where dead dragons were found. It can be harvested at any time. Currently, it mostly comes from between Yizhou and Liangzhou; bones are also found in Bazhong. One seeks the spinal marrow, which should have a white background with brocade-like patterns and stick to the tongue when licked—this is considered high quality. Small teeth that are strong, resembling brain matter, soft and plump, can also stop dysentery. It is said that these are dragon molts, not actual deaths. Recently, dragon wombs have been frequently obtained in Bazhong; I have personally seen their complete forms. They are said to treat difficult labor and postpartum ailments, and should be taken as powder. [Recorded Investigation] Dragon Bone currently originates from Jin territory. Hard ones are inferior; those with all five colors are superior. The green, yellow, red, white, and black colors should correspond to the Zang-Fu organs, similar to Wu Zhi (Five Mushrooms), Wu Shi Ying (Five Quartz Stones), and Wu Shi Zhi (Five Kaolins). However, the *Shennong Bencao Jing* does not discuss this, and the reason is unknown.
