Taste is sweet, nature is warm, and it is toxic. It primarily treats brightening the eyes, benefiting the ears, eliminating deep cold in the abdomen, breaking hard accumulations and scrofula (tuberculous lymphadenitis), and killing various insects and evil beasts. Long-term use prolongs life. It is also known as Cangshi, Qishi, and Shudu. It grows in Xicheng, and can be harvested at any time. It is best when calcined by fire, but fears water. Old texts state that stones found in stork nests are the best, because storks frequently enter cold water, so these stones were taken to cover eggs to keep them warm. This is no longer available today. Only stones from Hanzhong are used; those with an external appearance of purple-red color, internal whiteness like frost, a central depression resembling a mortar, and a shape like teeth are considered superior. The "Dasan Fang" states: produced in Fangling County, Xincheng Commandery, Jingzhou Prefecture; calcined white stones are of good quality. When used, they are first wrapped in yellow earth and roasted for one day, or can be roasted inside an axe hole. They are widely used in pills such as Yuhu Wan. The "Xianjing" does not mention Tesheng Shi, implying it is merely the Baishi mentioned previously.
[Note by Tang Shenwei]: Tao Hongjing's description of Tesheng Shi refers to those shaped like teeth and mortars in the center, which is correct. However, the stones currently produced are fine grains resembling millet seeds.
Taste is sweet, nature is warm, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats chronic cold conditions, accumulations, lightens the body, and prolongs life. Excessive intake causes heat in the body.
It originates from Xizongli Mountain in Xuzhou. It grows more than one zhang underground, amidst rotting earth and stones, appearing yellowish-white, fine and soft like flour. It is also known as Huagongshi and Shinao, and requires calcination.
Taste is bitter and pungent, nature is greatly cold, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats residual heat in the chest, qi stagnation, jaundice, unblocks blood vessels, and removes gu poison. It is also known as Huangshi. It grows in Fangshan, and can be harvested at any time.
It is incompatible with Euphorbia lathyris (Badou). According to the "Shennong Bencao Jing", Changshi is also named Fangshi, and its therapeutic effects are similar; it is suspected to be this substance.
[Note by Tang Shenwei]: This stone has a cold nature, and its ability to treat heat is comparable to Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao).
Taste is sweet, nature is neutral, and it is toxic. It primarily treats alternating chills and fever, directs qi downward, erodes foul flesh, and kills birds and rats. It grows in Xicheng, and can be harvested at any time.
It is no longer used in common practice. Its specific form is unrecognized.
[Note by Tang Shenwei]: Tesheng Qishi is also known as Cang Qishi. Stones from Liangzhou are often produced, some of which are green. Currently, in Fangling and Hanchuan, where Baishi is found, there are green varieties that are equally toxic and kill poultry and beasts, similar to Qishi. People in Hanzhong also use it to poison rats, but it is not included in prescriptions. This stone is produced in Liangzhou, Junzhou, and Fangzhou, sharing origins with the two types of Qishi. Tesheng Shi and Cangshi both grow in Xicheng, specifically in the area of Jinzhou, Hanchuan.
