Bitter, sweet, cold, toxic. Primarily treats toothache with expulsion of parasites, flesh bi (obstruction in the muscles and tendons) with stiffness and spasm, enables vigorous walking and hallucinations of seeing ghosts. Treats epilepsy, wind-phlegm convulsions, turning over, and spasmodic contraction.
[It causes one to] run fast like a galloping horse, strengthens the will, increases strength, and connects with the divine spirit. Also known as Hengtang (横唐) or Xingtang (行唐). Grows by the sea coast, river valleys, and in Yongzhou. The seeds are harvested in the fifth month.
Now it is also found everywhere. The seed shape is somewhat similar to the pit of Schisandra chinensis (Wuweizi, 五味子) but extremely small. It is only used in formulas for treating mania; however, this implies that it should not be consumed excessively or in overdose. Long-term use naturally has no adverse effects; connecting with the divine spirit and enabling vigorous walking are indeed great benefits. Yet, the *Immortal Classics* do not record its use, whereas current practitioners often mistake it for Hyoscyamus niger (Langdang, 莨菪).
Pungent, neutral, slightly warm, toxic. Primarily treats malaria and cough with alternating cold and heat, hardness in the abdomen due to accumulation, epigastric fullness and obstruction, accumulations and masses, pathogenic factors, gu poison, and ghostly transmission diseases. [Grows in] Jianglin Mountain, river valleys; grows in Shu and Hanzhong; it is the sprout of Hengshan (Dichroa febrifuga, 恒山). The leaves are harvested in the fifth month and dried in the shade.
Trichosanthes kirilowii (Gualou, 栝蒌) acts as its guide drug; it opposes Cyathula officinalis (Guanzhong, 贯众). Although both are sprouts of Hengshan, their origins differ: Jianglin Mountain is another name for Jiangyang Mountain in Yizhou, hence they originate from the same region. When people there harvest it, they still twist and knot it into pills; those that are properly dried are excellent.
[Respectful Note] This herb, when sun-dried, becomes slightly withered; then it is bundled and exposed to the sun until dry. Its color is greenish-white and suitable for use. If dried in the shade, it turns black, rots, and spoils. Tao Hongjing claimed it was made into pills, but this refers to cakes, not Shuqi (蜀漆).
Bitter, pungent, cold, slightly cold, toxic. Primarily treats cold damage with alternating cold and heat, warm malaria with fever onset, ghostly toxins, phlegm accumulation in the chest with vomiting and reflux. Treats wandering gu poison, water swelling, shivering aversion to cold, and scrofula (Shulou, 鼠瘘).
Also known as Hucao (互草). Grows in river valleys of Yizhou and Hanzhong. The roots are harvested in the eighth month and dried in the shade.
It fears Aconitum carmichaelii processed (Yuzha, 玉札). Produced in Yidu and Jianping; the fine, solid, yellow ones are called Jigu Hengshan (Chicken Bone Hengshan), which are considered the most superior.
[Respectful Note] The leaves of Hengshan are narrow and long like tea leaves; the stems bear flowers with green calyces. It bears fruit in the fifth month, which is green and round. Three seeds form a locule. It grows in mountain valleys, and its height does not exceed three or four chi.
