[Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi)]
Taste: Bitter. Nature: Warm. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Mainly treats cough with counterflow qi and damage to the middle jiao (spleen and stomach); tonifies insufficiency; expels pathogenic factors; unblocks the nine orifices; enhances wisdom; improves hearing and vision, making them clear and acute; strengthens memory; stabilizes willpower; increases physical strength. Beneficial for men; calms the heart qi; stops palpitations and fright; benefits essence; removes stagnant qi under the heart and diaphragm; clears heat in the skin; treats yellowing of the face and eyes. Long-term use makes the body light, delays aging, improves complexion, and prolongs life. The leaves are named "Xiaocao" (Little Herb), mainly benefiting essence, supplementing yin qi, stopping deficiency-induced nocturnal emission. Also known as Jiwan, Rao, and Xicao. Grows in the valleys of Mount Tai and Wanqu. Roots and leaves are harvested in April and dried in the shade. It works well when combined with Poria (Fuling), Abutilon Seeds (Dongkuizi), and Dragon Bone (Longgu). It neutralizes the toxicity of Aconitum Lateralis Preparatum (Tianxiong) and Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi). It is incompatible with Pearl (Zhenzhu), Veratrum (Lilu), Cockroach (Feilian), and Qige. According to records, "Qige" does not appear in standard pharmacopoeias, likely referring to Lily Bulb (Baihe). Wanqu County belongs to Jiyin Commandery, Yanzhou Prefecture; currently, medicinal materials still come from Lanling north of Pengcheng. When used, it should be crushed, the woody core removed, and only the bark taken. Currently, one jin of raw material yields only three liang of bark; market vendors often increase the quantity to deceive. Xiaocao resembles Ephedra (Mahuang) but is green. Polygalae Radix is also used in Daoist immortal formulas.
[Note] "Qige" is recorded in Volume 2 of *Yaolu*.
[Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie)]
Taste: Sweet, Salty. Nature: Cold. Toxicity: Non-toxic. Indications: Mainly treats wind-cold-damp bi syndrome, difficulty in lactation, promotes urination to reduce edema, nourishes the five zang organs, supplements qi and strength, makes the body robust and plump. Tonifies deficiency and damage from the five labors; eliminates seminal emission, thirst (xiaoke), and dysuria (linli); drives out stagnant water in the bladder and sanjiao. Long-term use improves hearing and vision, prevents hunger, prolongs life, makes the body light, gives a radiant complexion, and legend says it enables walking on water. Bian Que stated: Excessive consumption causes eye disease in patients. Also known as Shuixie, Jixie, Mangyu, and Huxie. Grows in the ponds and marshes of Runan. Roots are harvested in May, June, and August and dried in the shade. Incompatible with Clam (Haige) and Meretrix (Wenge). Leaves: Taste salty, non-toxic. Treats severe wind diseases, lack of milk secretion, difficult labor, strengthens yin qi; long-term use makes the body light. Harvested in May. Fruits: Taste sweet, non-toxic. Treats wind-bi and thirst; supplements kidney qi, strengthens yin, tonifies insufficiency, expels damp pathogens; long-term use gives a radiant complexion but may cause infertility. Harvested in September. Runan Commandery belongs to Yuzhou Prefecture. Although available nearby now, the quality is poor and unsuitable for use. Only those from Hanzhong, Nanzheng, and Qingyi are preferred, characterized by large size, long shape, and a forked tail, which is considered superior. This herb is prone to rotting and insect damage and must be stored tightly sealed. Leaves are narrow and long, growing in clusters in shallow water. *Xianjing* (Daoist Canon) uses it for grain-abstaining practices. It is also said to make the body light and enable walking on water.
[Note] Runan is no longer used; only those from Jingzhou and Huazhou are considered best.
