Sweet in flavor, cold in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats lithiasis (urinary calculi) and dissipates accumulated heat. It can be burned to ash; if a stone thrown into the ash disperses and dissolves, it is a male magpie.
On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, magpie brain is collected for use by Daoist practitioners, also known as Feibo Wu (Flying Dappled Crow). The sex of birds is difficult to distinguish; old texts state that the one with the left wing covering the right is male, and the one with the right wing covering the left is female. Another method is to burn feathers into powder, place them in water: those that sink are male, and those that float are female. The current statement about throwing stones [into the ash] likely applies only to magpies, not necessarily other birds, and I have not verified this myself.
Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Primarily treats five types of hemorrhoids and stops bleeding. It can be roasted and eaten, or ground into powder and taken orally with water.
The bird resembling [a certain type] but with a crest on its head is the peacock. (Newly added)
Pungent in flavor, neutral in nature, toxic. Primarily treats gu poison (parasitic poisoning) and gui zhu (ghostly afflictions, a term for chronic wasting diseases), expels inauspicious evil qi, breaks five types of long bi (dysuria/urinary retention), and promotes urination. It grows in high mountains and flat valleys.
There are two types of swallows: Hu Yan (Northern Swallow) and Yue Yan (Southern Swallow). Those with purple chests and light, small bodies are Yue Yans, which are not used in medicine; those with black-spotted chests and loud voices are Hu Yans. Commonly called Xiahou, they prefer building nests with long entrances. People say the entrance can accommodate a length of silk fabric, which is believed to bring wealth to the household. The swallow nest can also be used as medicine, similar to swallow droppings. It is often boiled for bathing to treat conditions where the body bends forward and the tail curls with white discoloration. These are swallows hundreds of years old; consuming them extends life. However, swallow meat should not be eaten, as it is said to cause one to be swallowed by dragons when entering water, and killing swallows is inadvisable.
[Commentary]: *Bie Lu* states: Hu Yan eggs primarily treat edema. Swallow meat expels worms from hemorrhoids. Yue Yan droppings also treat hemorrhoids, kill parasites, and remove corneal opacities.
Slightly cold in nature. Primarily treats leukorrhea and difficulty in urination in women. Produced in Guangyi prefectures; also raised in the capital area. Physicians do not commonly use peacock droppings.
[Commentary]: Peacock droppings are found in Jiaozhou and Guangzhou, but were originally absent in Jiannan.
Also known as Shu Shuihua. Removes facial dark spots. The head is slightly cold in nature, primarily treats fishbone impaction and dysphagia; consumed after being charred.
It is very common in streams and valleys; one should collect its droppings personally, selecting the white parts, as market-sold ones cannot be trusted. The bones also treat fishbone impaction. This bird does not lay eggs but gives birth to live young by spitting them out, which is a unique phenomenon.
