(Zhegu Bird) The flavor is sweet, the nature is warm, and it is non-toxic. It primarily treats wild gecko mushroom poisoning, raw metal toxicity in the Lingnan region, and prolonged warm miasma causing near-death states that are refractory to treatment; boil the feathers and take them soaked in wine.
Freshly crushed and juice extracted for oral administration yields the best results. It grows in the Jiangnan region.
Its shape resembles a hen, and the one whose cry sounds like "gou-ge-zhe" is this bird.
There are similar birds that do not make this sound; those are not this bird. (New Appendix)
(Zhi/Wild Pheasant) The flavor is sour, slightly cold, and non-toxic. It primarily tonifies the Middle Jiao, boosts Qi and strength, stops diarrhea and dysentery, and eliminates ant bite toxins.
Although Zhi does not belong to the Earthly Branch Chen, it is precisely the Li Bird associated with Fire. It should not be eaten on Jingwu days (around Summer Solstice), as this indicates its sovereignty over Fire.
[Su Jing's Note] Zhi has a sweet flavor and primarily treats various sores and ulcers.
(Eagle) It primarily treats contusions from beating and eliminates scars.
Using only the white part cannot eliminate scars. It should also be combined with other herbs such as Bombyx Batryticatus (Jiangcan) and Lepisma Saccharina (Yiyu) to prepare an ointment.
[Su Jing's Note] Eagle excrement, calcined to ash,
taken orally with wine in a dose of one cun bi, primarily treats severe alcohol intoxication, allowing sudden consumption to reveal its efficacy.
(Que/Sparrow) The flavor is sour, the nature is warm, and it is non-toxic. It primarily directs Qi downward, treats male impotence (failure of erection), induces heat upon erection, increases semen volume to facilitate conception. The brain treats deafness. Head blood treats night blindness (Que Mang); male sparrow excrement treats eye pain, resolves carbuncles and boils, treats leukorrhea in women, difficult urination, and eliminates hernia and mass formations. Collected in the fifth lunar month, it is optimal.
Sparrows possess a nature beneficial to the harmonization of Yin and Yang, thus their eggs are similarly effective. The Materia Medica states: Sparrow eggs taken with Tianxiong Pills can enlarge the penis and prevent decline. When humans cannot see during twilight hours,
it is called Que Mang (night blindness), which is treated by sparrow head blood.
Male sparrow excrement, characterized by pointed ends, also treats dental caries. Sparrow meat should not be consumed with plums, nor is it advisable to consume it with soy sauce; pregnant women are especially prohibited from eating it.
[Su Jing's Note] The *Bielu* states: Mix sparrow excrement with colostrum from a male infant
until it resembles thin mud, apply to the eyes; if there are fleshy growths with red vessels penetrating the pupil, it will resolve; or take with a small amount of dried ginger to enhance complexion.
(Guan Bone) The flavor is sweet and non-toxic. It primarily treats ghost-gu and various Zhu poisons, Wushi diseases, and disorders of the heart and abdomen.
Guan comes in two varieties: those resembling swans that nest in trees are White Guan, while those that are black with curved necks are Yangwu Guan. The white variety is used here.
