Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats pathogenic factors of the five Zang organs, calms the mind, alleviates anorexia, expels parasites, and eliminates toxins. Long-term consumption strengthens the Hun and Po (ethereal and corporeal souls), enhances auditory and visual acuity, lightens the body, and prevents aging.
Those referred to as "Tong" resemble Areca Seed (Binglang). They grow in the valleys of Nanhai.
In Guangzhou, there is another variety called Longyan, which resembles Lychee but is smaller; it is not Yizhi (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit), likely due to a local alias. The current Yizhi is the correct one, and consuming both is beneficial to humans.
[Recorded Investigation] Yizhi resembles the seed of Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao); those with the head unopened have a sweet and pungent flavor, bearing no resemblance to Areca Seed. Its sprouts, leaves, flowers, and roots are indistinguishable from Cardamom Seed (Doukou), except that its seeds are smaller. Longyan is also named Yizhi, yet Yizhi is not Longyan. The Longyan tree resembles the Lychee tree; its leaves are like those of Malus asiatica (Linna); its flowers are white; its fruits resemble Areca Seed, possessing scaly armor, being as large as a pheasant's egg, and having a sweet and sour taste.
Bitter in flavor, warm and greatly warm in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats Wind-Stroke, Cold Damage, headache, alternating chills and fever, palpitations, Bi syndrome of Qi and Blood, necrotic muscle tissue, expels three types of parasites, warms the Middle Jiao, benefits Qi, resolves phlegm and directs rebellious Qi downward, treats Cholera and abdominal pain, distension and fullness, cold rebellion in the Stomach, incessant vomiting in the chest, diarrhea and dysentery, strangury with dribbling, fright injuring the Stomach. It is also known as Nongpi and Chi Pu.
The tree is named Zhen, and its fruit is named Zhuxiang. It treats Shuluo (scrofula/lymphatic tuberculosis), brightens the eyes, and benefits Qi. It grows in Jiaozhi and Wanqu. The bark is harvested in the third, ninth, and tenth months and dried in the shade.
Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with Alumen (Zexie), Aragonite (Hanshuishi), and Niter (Xiaoshi). Currently, it is produced in Jianping and Yidu. The best quality has extremely thick bark and purple flesh; those with thin shells and white interiors are inferior. When used, the rough outer crust must be scraped off.
It is widely used in secular prescriptions but is unnecessary for Daoist cultivation.
Sweet and bitter in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. It primarily treats Malaria, detoxifies, wards off Gu poison, Zhu disease, and other inauspicious influences, and promotes urination. Long-term consumption lightens the body and delays aging. It is also known as Zhishiling (named for resembling pig feces). It is harvested in the second and eighth months and dried in the shade.
It is currently unavailable in Xiangzhou and Hengshan due to blocked trade routes; all supply comes from Ningzhou. Old texts state it is Fengshuling (Poria on Maple Wood); its skin is very black, forming lumps resembling pig feces, hence the name. White and solid flesh is preferred.
When used, the black skin must be scraped off to qualify. In recent years, it has been particularly difficult to obtain.
