Zhenren Yangzang Tang (Formula by Luo Qianfu): Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Hezi (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus). Ying Susu Ke (Papaveris Pericarpium), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) are combined together. It brings peace and harmony in cases of rectal prolapse and chronic dysentery.
(Hezi wrapped in flour and roasted, 1 liang 2 qian; Ying Susu Ke with calyx removed and honey-fried, 3 liang 6 qian; Roudoukou wrapped in flour and roasted, 5 qian; Danggui and Baizhu stir-fried, Baishao wine-fried, Renshen each 6 qian; Muxiang 2 liang 4 qian; Guizhi 8 qian; Sheng Gancao raw Licorice Root 1 liang 8 qian. Take 4 qian per dose. If internal cold is severe, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). Some formulas do not contain Danggui; some contain Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma).)
Rectal prolapse is caused by deficiency-cold. Renshen, Baizhu, and Gancao are used to tonify the deficiency. Guizhi and Roudoukou are used to warm the cold. Muxiang regulates Qi. Danggui harmonizes Blood. Baishao alleviates pain. Hezi and Ying Susu Ke astringe and stop prolapse.
Chen Xiuyuan said: This is a formula that aggregates herbs to treat disease, favored by city physicians. I personally disagree. However, the extensive use of Muxiang prevents stagnation despite its astringent nature, which shows profound insight.
○ Dampness can moisten dryness
Indications: Various Qi stagnations, various Wei syndromes (flaccidity syndromes), panting, and vomiting.
Qingzao Jiufei Tang contains Renshen, Gancao, Ma (Hemp seed/likely referring to Huma Ren or an error in original text, translated literally as Hemp), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Pipaye (Loquat Leaf). Dried Sangye (Mori Folium) harvested after frost. Resolving stagnation and nourishing dryness yields praiseworthy effects. (Sangye harvested after frost 3 qian, Shigao 2.5 qian, Gancao and Hima (Sesami Nigrum Semen) each 1 qian, Renshen and Xingren (deprived of skin and tip) each 0.7 qian, Zhen Ejiao 0.8 qian, Pipaye (hair removed, honey-fried) one slice, Maidong 1.2 qian. Decoct in water and take hot. Add Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) if phlegm is abundant; add Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) if blood is depleted; add Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) and Lingyangjiao (Antilopis Cornu) if heat is severe.)
Chen Xiuyuan said: Yu Jiayan formulated this formula and noted in his annotation: Various Qi stagnations belonging to the Lung belong to Lung dryness. Various Wei syndromes, panting, and vomiting belonging to the Upper Jiao also belong to Lung dryness. Ancients used acrid-aromatic herbs to resolve stagnation, which is indeed unsuitable for dryness syndromes. Even using bitter-cold herbs like Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to drain fire is unsuitable because bitterness enters the Heart first and may transform into fire. Yu followed Miu Zhongchun’s method of sweet-cool and moistening-nourishing to create this formula. Named Qingzao (Clearing Dryness), it actually nourishes Water (Kidney Water), akin to the I Ching saying, "Nothing moistens things more than Water." Named Jiufei (Saving the Lung), it actually tonifies the Stomach, because Stomach Earth is the mother of Lung Metal. The most exquisite aspect is the single herb Renshen. Zhang Zhongjing omitted Renshen in cough syndromes because it is unsuitable for coughs due to wind-cold and water-fluid retention. Past physicians, not having read the Bencao Jing, doubted Zhang Zhongjing’s methods and tried them; symptoms worsened upon use, leading to the saying "Lung heat injures the lung again," and Renshen became contraindicated for Lung heat. They did not realize that Renshen is contraindicated for Lung cold but is a fine herb for Lung heat and Lung dryness. Bian Que said, "For those whose Lung is damaged, benefit their Qi." Besides the sweet-cool nature of Renshen, what else could drain excessive fire and benefit Qi?
