Jin Suo Gu Jing Wan (Golden Lock Essence-Securing Pill) is made by grinding Qianshi (Euryale Seed). It contains Lianxu (Lotus Stamen), Longgu (Fossilized Bones), Muli (Oyster Shell), Jili (Tribulus Fruit), and Lian (Coptis Rhizome, likely referring to Huanglian here given the context of clearing heat, though strictly 'Lian' can mean Lotus, in formula contexts often implies Coptis for heat; however, standard Jin Suo Gu Jing does not contain Coptis. The text says "Lian", likely a typo or specific variation for Huanglian/Coptis to clear heart fire, or potentially Lotus seeds/stamen already covered. Given "Lian" usually means Lotus, but listed separately from Qianshi/Lianxu, and paired with cold herbs, it might be Huanglian. However, strict translation of "Lian" is Lotus. But in this specific poem context "Jili Lian", it often refers to Tribulus and Coptis (Huanglian) in some variations, or simply Lotus parts. Let's stick to the literal "Lian" as Lotus part or clarify if it implies Coptis. Actually, standard Jin Suo Gu Jing has: Qianshi, Lianxu, Shanyuanjili, Longgu, Muli. The poem adds "Lian". In Chen Xiuyuan's commentary, he criticizes the mix. I will translate "Lian" as Lotus (part) or assume it refers to the Lotus components already mentioned or potentially Coptis if it's a specific variant. Given "Lian" appears after Jili, and standard formulas don't have Coptis, I will translate it as Lotus (part) or leave as Lian. Wait, "Lian" in TCM often abbreviates Huanglian (Coptis). If it were Lotus, it would be Lianzi or Lianxu. Since Lianxu is listed, "Lian" likely refers to Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) to clear Heart Fire, which is common in essence-loss cases involving Heart-Kidney non-interaction. I will use Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian) with a note or just Coptis Rhizome as it fits the "cold" nature described later in Fengsui Dan context? No, this is Jin Suo Gu Jing. Standard Jin Suo Gu Jing does NOT have Coptis. It has Qianshi, Lianxu, Shanyuanjili, Longgu, Muli. The poem says "Jili Lian". This might be a textual error in the source or a specific local variation. I will translate "Lian" as Lotus (part) to be safe, or Coptis if interpreting as abbreviation. Given the criticism "no meaning", it might be an arbitrary addition. I will translate as Lotus (Part) [Lian].
*Correction*: In many editions of *Shi Fang Ge Kuo*, this line is interpreted as including Coptis (Huanglian) to clear heat, or it's a corruption. However, strictly translating "Lian" (莲) usually means Lotus. But "Lian" (连) means Coptis. The character used is 莲 (Lotus). So it is Lotus. But Lotus is already there (Qianshi, Lianxu). This is redundant. I will translate literally as Lotus (Part).
Wait, looking at the ingredients list in parentheses: "Qianshi steamed. Lianrui (Lotus embryo), Lianxu (Lotus stamen), Shanyuanjili (Astragalus Complanatus/Tribulus?), Chao (fried) each 2 liang. Longgu (Fossilized Bones) roasted with butter. Muli (Oyster Shell) boiled in salt water for one day and night. Fen (Powder) each 3 liang."
The poem lists: Qianshi, Lianxu, Longgu, Muli, Jili, Lian.
The ingredient list mentions: Qianshi, Lianrui, Lianxu, Shanyuanjili, Longgu, Muli.
It seems "Lian" in the poem might refer to Lianrui (Lotus Embryo) or is a poetic redundancy. I will translate "Lian" as Lotus (Embryo/Part).
Actually, standard Jin Suo Gu Jing Formula:
1. Qianshi (Euryale Seed)
2. Lianxu (Lotus Stamen)
3. Shanyuanjili (Astragalus Complanatus Seed - often confused with Tribulus, but Shanyuanjili is Astragalus)
4. Longgu (Fossilized Bones)
5. Muli (Oyster Shell)
6. Sometimes Lianrui (Lotus Embryo) is added.
The poem says "Jili Lian". If Jili is Tribulus, and Shanyuanjili is Astragalus, they are different. The text says "Shanyuanjili" in the instructions. The poem says "Jili".
I will translate based on the text provided.
Translation:
Jin Suo Gu Jing Wan (Golden Lock Essence-Securing Pill) is prepared by grinding Qianshi (Euryale Seed). It includes Lianxu (Lotus Stamen), Longgu (Fossilized Bones), Muli (Oyster Shell), Jili (Tribulus Terrestris), and Lian (Lotus Part). It is further combined using Lianfen (Lotus Powder) as a binder. Long-term administration eliminates nocturnal emission and spermatorrhea.
(Preparation: Steam Qianshi (Euryale Seed). Take Shaoyuanjili (Astragalus Complanatus Seed, often referred to as Shanyuanjili), Lianrui (Lotus Embryo), Lianxu (Lotus Stamen), fry them, each 2 liang. Roast Longgu (Fossilized Bones) with butter. Boil Muli (Oyster Shell) in salt water for one day and night. Grind into powder, each 3 liang. Use Lianfen (Lotus Powder) mixed with water to make pills. Take with light salt water or wine.)
Chen Xiuyuan stated: This formula merely aggregates various drugs without logical coherence. Even street vendors or pharmacy assistants could manufacture it. Zhang Jingyue’s new formulas also contain many such examples. These practitioners prefer to claim their formulas are "stable," but I, Chen Xiuyuan, do not flatter them.
It treats nocturnal emission due to dream disturbance and "ghost intercourse" (a term for hallucinations or psychological disturbances manifesting as sexual contact).
Fengsui Dan (Seal the Marrow Pill) treats erratic dreams and seminal emission. It is made by mixing Sharen (Amomum Fruit), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), and Gancao (Licorice Root) into pills.
(Formula: Sharen (Amomum Fruit) 1 liang, Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) 2 liang, Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) 7 qian. Make honey pills. Take 3 qian per dose, delivered with light salt water. Another version uses Rongrong (Cistanche Stem) 5 qian, sliced, washed until bland, soaked in wine overnight, boiled next day for three to four boils, taken before the pill.)
This formula achieves great sealing and securing, keeping the spring vitality forever, skillfully seizing the power of innate creation.
Chen Xiuyuan stated: Quack doctors often suspect this formula is too cold and lacks tonification, so they dare not use it. They fail to realize the wonder of its "great sealing and securing," which actually usurps the authority of creation. Compared to Jin Suo Gu Jing Wan (Golden Lock Essence-Securing Pill), the difference is like heaven and earth. If one combines it with the ingredients of Sancai Tang (Three Capabilities Decoction) as recorded in *Baodian*, naming it Sancai Fengsui Wan (Three Capabilities Seal-the-Marrow Pill), it becomes rigid, substantial, and inflexible. Zhao Yuhuang’s discussion on this formula is most exquisite; it should be read carefully.
Zhao Yuhuang stated: The *Classic* says: "The Kidney governs water and receives the essence of the five zang and six fu organs to store it." It also says: "The Kidney governs hibernation, is the root of sealing and storing, and is the residence of essence." Generally, the Kidney is a "stingy" organ, characterized more by deficiency than excess. Because Liver Wood (the child of Kidney Water) tends to drain the mother’s qi through dispersing action. Once the Minister Fire of Jueyin (Liver/Gallbladder) moves, essence flows out with it. Moreover, the Liver stores the Hun (Ethereal Soul). If the Hun and Shen (Spirit) are not controlled, it is natural that one dreams of intercourse while sleeping and suffers from essence leakage.
Fengsui Dan (Seal the Marrow Pill) is a key herb for securing essence. The formula uses Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark) as the Sovereign drug because its flavor is bitter and nature is cold. Bitterness strengthens the Kidney; once the Kidney’s function is solidified, Yin water need not fear overflowing. Coldness clears and purifies; when the Autumn energy arrives, Dragon Fire (Minister Fire) does not surge upward. When Water and Fire interact and control each other, how can essence fail to remain in its proper place?
Gancao (Licorice Root) is used as an Assistant because sweetness can relieve urgency, draining internal irritability caused by various fires and Liver Fire. It also allows Earth and Water to unite as one family, subtly enhancing the stability of storage.
As for Suosha (Amomum Fruit/Cardamom), its flavor is pungent and nature is warm, making it excellent at entering the Kidney. The Kidney dislikes dryness, and only pungency can moisten it. Suosha (Amomum Fruit) unblocks the Triple Burner and distributes fluids, enabling the gathering of essence from the five zang and six fu organs back into the Kidney. When Kidney Qi is gathered, the Marrow within the Kidney is naturally stored.
