[Verse] Why does it cause belching? It is likely due to phlegm-fire invading the Stomach. To treat phlegm, use Arisaema Cum Bile (Nanxing), Pinellia Rhizome Preparata (Banxia), and Tangerine Peel (Chenpi). To treat fire, use Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian) and Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) and similar herbs.
[Discussion] Belching refers to conditions where there is fire, phlegm, food retention, and qi stagnation in the Stomach. Arisaema Cum Bile (Nanxing), Pinellia Rhizome Preparata (Banxia), soft Gypsum Fibrosum (Ruanshigao), stir-fried black Gardenia Fruit (Zhishizi), and Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu) can be taken as pills or decoctions.
It is also said: Under the Phlegm section, for symptoms of belching and acid regurgitation caused by food retention turning into heat, where fire qi rushes upward causing belching, Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) is used as the sovereign herb, with Arisaema Cum Bile (Nanxing), Pinellia Rhizome Preparata (Banxia), and Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) as ministering herbs. If heat is prominent, add Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai), Gardenia Fruit (Zhizhi), and Trichosanthes Seed (Gualouren), or take Runxia Wan.
Runxia Wan (Formula see Phlegm section.)
(Brow and Orbit Pain - Appendix)
[Verse] Headache must first be distinguished between Jueyin headache and True Headache; wet-phlegm, wind, fire, and pathogenic invasion are involved. Qi deficiency, blood deficiency, and cold-dampness require astute physicians to examine the Six Channels. Furthermore, frequent pain in the brow and orbits is caused by wind-phlegm and wind-heat lodging in the channels.
[Discussion] For Taiyang channel headache, there is aversion to wind and cold, a floating and tight pulse, and pain at the vertex and lateral frontal angles. Shaoyang channel headache involves alternating chills and fever, a wiry pulse, and pain radiating to the root of the ear. Yangming channel headache presents with fever and spontaneous sweating, a large and floating pulse, and pain radiating to the orbits, cheeks, and teeth. Taiyin channel headache necessarily involves phlegm, heavy body, possibly abdominal pain, a deep pulse, and a heavy head. Shaoyin channel headache features cold feet with counterflow of cold, constituting Cold Jue, with a deep and fine pulse. Jueyin channel headache involves spitting of phlegm foam, cold limbs, a floating and moderate pulse, and pain radiating to the visual system. These Six Channel headaches mostly involve external pathogens.
Blood-deficiency headache attacks from the outer canthus upwards. Qi-deficiency headache involves tinnitus and dysfunction of the nine orifices. Damp-heat headache generated from the intestines and stomach causes mental restlessness and heavy, severe pain, located in the diaphragm region, involving the Hand-Taiyang and Hand-Shaoyin channels. Cold-damp headache involves qi rising but not descending, causing vertex disease, lower deficiency and upper excess, involving the Hand-Shaoyin and Foot-Taiyang channels, and entering the Kidney if severe.
Hemicrania (one-sided headache) involves cold pain on one side of the head; initially select Hand-Shaoyang and Hand-Yangming points, then Foot-Shaoyang and Foot-Yangming points. Jue headache occurs when severe cold penetrates to the bone marrow; since marrow governs the brain, brain qi counterflows, causing headache and toothache. True Headache involves severe pain extending to the brain, with cold hands and feet reaching the joints; morning onset leads to evening death, evening onset leads to morning death.
Danxi stated: Headaches are mostly due to phlegm, severely due to fire; some can be treated with emesis, some with purgation. Brow and orbit pain belongs to wind-heat and phlegm. Liver deficiency headache worsens upon exposure to light. Brow ridge pain prevents opening the eyes, being quiet during the day and worse at night, belonging to phlegm. All such cases vary; observe the accompanying pathogens, investigate the etiology, determine the meridians, refer to pulse diagnosis, and apply tonifying, draining, dispersing, unblocking, diaphoretic, and purgative methods to avoid bias.
