[Verse]
Exterior deficiency and blood weakness cause sweat to flow like water; dampness syndromes drip incessantly without ceasing. Phlegm syndromes cause moisture to constantly soak the back; collapse of Yang Qi and depletion causes sweat to be like oil. Yin deficiency with night sweats is accompanied by blood deficiency; sweat soaks the bedding during deep sleep and stops upon waking. Heart sweating is generally caused by excessive thinking, feeling as if a round patch exists in the heart center.
[Dissertation]
Spontaneous sweating refers to sweat flowing out naturally morning and evening. Night sweating refers to sweating during sleep and stopping upon waking, acting like a thief, hence the name; it is due to Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire. The Heart stores blood internally and manifests as sweat externally; therefore, sweat is the fluid of the Heart. Thus, spontaneous sweating syndromes are invariably triggered by Heart Qi deficiency. There are also cases of spontaneous sweating due to Yang deficiency and Qi weakness, where Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) fails to consolidate and retain. There are cases due to excess Dampness, exterior deficiency, phlegm syndromes, and fire qi steaming upward into stomachal dampness. These vary greatly and should be treated according to the specific syndrome. Night sweating results from Yin deficiency and blood weakness; usually, tonifying Yin, descending fire, and benefiting Qi will lead to self-healing. If there is no sweat elsewhere on the body but only at the heart orifice, it is called Heart Sweating, caused by excessive mental exertion. The pathology lies in the Heart; treatment should nourish Heart Blood, and the sweat will stop spontaneously.
[Pulse]
The pulse for sweating syndromes is floating and deficient, or soggy and choppy. Spontaneous sweating is indicated in the Cun (Inch) position; night sweating is indicated in the Chi (Cubit) position.
