Ren Heqing's prescription.
Soak the ox-hide gelatin (Niu Pi Jiao) in hot water until soft, spread it on paper, and apply it to the lesion according to its size; this will bring relief.
This treats all types of carbuncles, ulcers, back sores (Fa Bei), and swelling. It is most effective for treating inguinal abscesses (Bian Du). This is a formula from Han Shibow Ningdao, which was passed down by Zhao Canyi of Huaixi, also known as Liu Peng Chayuan's Wan Jin San. Chen Yanzhe of Dongping wrote a preface for it, which is not recorded here. If constipation occurs, one may take Ba Du Huang San.
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), half tael, ground into coarse powder; Moyao (Resina Olibani), one fen, ground; Gualou (Fructus Trichosanthis), one large fruit, skin removed, sliced.
Take the above three ingredients, add three sheng of unadulterated wine, and decoct until one sheng remains. Let it cool to warm temperature and take it at once. If one dose is not finished, divide it into three doses and take them consecutively. This has frequently produced miraculous effects.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali Membranacei), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei Palmati), macerated in wine and baked; Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), de-rhizomed; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), honey-fried; Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), de-rhizomed; Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba); Baifuzi (Rhizoma Typhonii Flagelliformis), processed; Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae Baicalensis); Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), skin and tip removed; Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae Suspensae). All these are in equal proportions.
Pound the above herbs and sieve them into a fine powder. For each dosage, first decoct half a tael or two he of black beans in one large bowl of water until reduced to seventy percent volume. Remove the black beans, add three qian of the herbal powder, and decoct again until one zhan remains. Take after meals, twice daily. Stop when foul matter is discharged. Topical agents for dressing and healing wounds should be used as appropriate.
This condition is called Xuan Yong (Hanging Abscess). This is a formula from Liu Congzhou, a physician from Shaozhou. Lin Qianzhi, the Jijiu (Director of Education), stated: Use one tael of high-quality Fen Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root). Add one bowl of running water measured four cun in length. Well water and river water must not be used. Slowly roast the licorice over alternating mild and strong fire, dipping in water occasionally, starting from morning until afternoon, until the water is completely evaporated. The center of the licorice root should feel moist. Then pierce it, finely chop it, and add it to two small Qing bowls of unadulterated wine. Decoct until sufficient for one or two doses. Taking this ensures safety. When this disease first appears, it is as large as a pine seed, gradually growing to the size of a lotus seed. If redness does not appear until dozens of days later, it becomes difficult to treat. Although taking this medicine may not eliminate it immediately, it will certainly disappear completely after more than twenty days. Administering two doses is harmless.
If the carbuncle has already ruptured, taking two doses of this medicine will cause the wound to close, which is very wonderful!
Tang Shouzi said that someone in Guangzhou suffered from Shen Yong (Kidney Carbuncle), with both urination and defecation blocked, causing great suffering. Hu Pangguan of the local prefecture ordered using clear ox-hide gelatin (Niu Pi Jiao), burning it on charcoal fire until it turned into black ash, grinding it extremely fine. Each dose was five qian, mixed with rice drink and taken orally. After taking approximately two taels, passage was restored. The discharged matter was all filth and foul substances, and the swelling subsided without further suppuration. Hu stated that this can be taken for any type of swelling, regardless of quantity, stopping when the internal organs become unblocked and free-flowing.
