This is the prescription from Vice-Prefect Xiang.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), one piece: First, stir-fry Duan Shi (Calcined Oolite) in an iron pot until it becomes extremely hot. Bury the Fuzi in the ashes. Once the ashes have cooled, retrieve the Fuzi. Stir-fry the Duan Shi again according to the previous method. Repeat this process three times. Then, take the Fuzi, remove the skin and umbilical scar, add forty-nine Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos) that have not been subjected to heat, grind them together into a fine powder, and take it on an empty stomach with three Zao Qie Er (fermented eggplant pieces).
It cures Fan Wei (Regurgitation/Dysphagia) with miraculous effect. Recorded in the biography of Jiang Yaozhang.
Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faeces), weighing five qian; Chen Sha (Cinnabar), weighing one qian; Mu Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos), one liang, not subjected to heat.
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder using a mortar and sieve. Add Dan Huang Gou Dan (Gallus Canis Fel) and Zong Zi Jian (tip of a zongzi rice dumpling) to form pills the size of a corn kernel. Take one pill per dose with Ginger Decoction or Rice Drink. For chronic conditions lasting thirty years, two or three pills are sufficient to stop the symptoms. This is essentially the Xiang Ling Wan (Fragrant Spirit Pill) from *Ben Shi Fang*, which uses only Ding Xiang, but with different dosages. Mu Ding Xiang is simply Ding Xiang; Shen Cunzhong's *Bi Tan* explains this in detail.
This is the prescription from Physician Xu of Wuwei.
Hu Jiao (Piperis Fructus), twenty-one grains; Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos), fourteen grains; Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum), seven pieces, washed with boiling water to remove slipperiness.
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Form pills the size of a corn kernel using fresh juice extracted from Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). For each use, take one pill. Take one dried Zao (Jujubae Fructus), split it open, remove the pit, insert the medicine inside, wrap it in wet paper, and bake/roast it until cooked. Let it cool to warm temperature, then chew thoroughly and swallow with Rice Drink.
For treating chest and diaphragm stuffiness and obstruction.
Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), remove the pith; Bai Fu Ling (Poria), sliced.
Take half a qian of each. Decoct together with one pill of Da Li Zhong Wan (Great Spleen-Warming Pill) as a single dose. Alternatively, take Yu Shan Ren's Jiang Qi Tang (Qi-Descending Decoction) consisting of fifteen ingredients.
Treating Fan Wei (Regurgitation), where food and drink cannot be taken at all. Xiao Mu Xiang San (Minor Woody Fragrance Powder) opens the stomach harmonizes qi. Source: *Bo Ji Fang*.
Hu Jiao (Piperis Fructus), twenty-one grains; Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), a small piece; Nu Mi (Oryza Sativa Glutinosa), a pinch.
Stir-fry the above three ingredients together until the rice grains are cooked. Pound into a powder. Divide into two doses. For each dose, decoct with one cup of water until reduced to six-tenths. Take warm. In the year Gengxu, my family's nursemaid was ill and recovered after taking these three prescriptions.
Shi Yao (Food-Medicine) is also known as Tou Qi Dan (Air-Penetrating Pill), transmitted by Zhang Chengzu.
Wu Mei (Mume Fructus), remove flesh but keep the pit; Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), stir-fried, ten liang each; Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), four liang; Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus), fifteen liang, stir-fried; Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), processed; Jing [Text incomplete, likely referring to Jing San Leng or similar].
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Use vinegar paste to form pills the size of a Sophora japonica seed. Take thirty to fifty pills per dose, with Ginger and Tangerine Peel Decoction.
