[Formula Name] Mugua Wan (Papaya Pill)
First Formula: For treating Hongxiangjiao (Gouty arthritis/Charcot foot characterized by swelling and pain in the feet, making walking difficult) causing pain so severe that one cannot walk, and for damp-type Hongxiangjiao where sores develop on the ankles.
Take Chuanwutou (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Xiangbaizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix). Note: Avoid drying them under direct sunlight. Use equal parts of each herb, raw, and grind into fine powder. Each time, use one qian (approx. 3-5g) of the powder, spread it inside the shoe, and step on it with the foot for excellent effect; or alternatively, place it in a silk pouch. This formula was obtained from Xian Chaoran.
Another Formula: Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix, slightly processed), Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix, slightly fried), Wulingzhi (Trogopterori Faeces, cleaned of stones), Tuhuixiang (Foeniculi Fructus, one qian each, slightly fried), and Heidou (Sojae Semen Nigrum, four liang, baked).
Take half of the powder of the first five herbs, mix it evenly with one-third of the fine powder of Chitu (Red Earth), and form pills using rice vinegar paste, sized like Sophora japonica seeds. Take the remaining half of the herb powder, mix it evenly with one-third of the fine powder of Baicaoshuang (Pulvis Carbonis Herbae), and also form pills using rice vinegar paste, sized like Sophora japonica seeds. If treating Hongxiangjiao, take fifteen red pills and five black pills as a single dose, delivered with a decoction of Songjie (Pinus Massoniana Stem), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), and Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), taken before meals; adding a small amount of Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) to the decoction is even better. If treating Fengqi (Wind-Dampness Bi syndrome), take fifteen black pills and five red pills as a single dose, delivered with clear tea after meals. Ge Bangmei recounted that he stayed in the same inn as a seller of this medicine, secretly memorized the preparation process, prepared it himself, and indeed achieved efficacy!
Ge Chuxian suffered from this disease for a year and a half while serving as Qianpan (Assistant Magistrate) of Huzhou. After taking these three formulas, he recovered before finishing a single course of treatment. On an empty stomach, first take Lurong Wan (Deer Antler Pill), made from equal parts of Lurong (Cervi Cornu Degelatinatum), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Chuandanggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Shudiganhuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), ground into fine powder, formed into pills using wine paste, sized like Sophora japonica seeds. Take thirty to forty pills each time, delivered with warm wine or salt water. Before meals, take a decoction of equal parts of Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), mixed with one to two qian of Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) fine powder. After meals, take Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) decoction, mixed with two to three qian of Xiaofeng San (Eliminate Wind Powder). By taking only these three medicines, the disease never recurred.
Xianshu Mugua Wan (Immortal Rheumatism Papaya Pill) for treating Hongxiangjiao. Su Yingsengsou transmitted this to Yang Meiqing, stating he had verified its efficacy personally. Take three large papayas from Xuanzhou, peel them, cut off the tops, and scoop out the seeds. Place six liang of Qingyan (Green Salt) inside the three papayas. Steam them over a rice steamer three or four times until soft and mashed. First, take two jin of Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), soak it in rice washing water for three days, then take it out. Boil it together with one sheng of Heidou (Sojae Semen Nigrum) in flowing river water, with the water level three cun above the herbs, until dry. Discard the black beans. Slice the Cangzhu, bake it dry, then add six liang of Baifuling (Poria), and grind everything together into a fine powder. Form pills using the mashed papaya, sized like Sophora japonica seeds. Take fifty pills each time, delivered with warm wine or salt water on an empty stomach. Efficacy will be seen within one month!
