Sal Nitri (2 liang, finely ground) Alumen (3 liang, finely ground) Halloysitum Rubrum (4 liang, finely ground) Arsenic Trioxide in lump form (1 liang, finely ground)
Take one crucible for calcining medicines, capable of holding ten liang of medicine. First, heat the crucible over fire, apply ginger juice several times, and dry it by heating. Place the arsenic powder at the bottom of the crucible and press it firmly. Next, place the sal nitri powder and press it firmly. Then, place the alumen powder and press it firmly. Finally, cover with halloysitum rubrum powder to fill the crucible completely. Cover the mouth of the crucible with a round tile, and place the crucible on the ground. Surround the top with five jin of charcoal to ignite the fire from above, continuing until the smoke ceases. Remove the fire, wait for it to cool, and retrieve the medicine. The arsenic will be at the bottom; scrape it clean and grind it extremely fine. It is better to grind the arsenic separately. Next, add one liang of pure white kaolin (good quality white clay may also be used), grind together into a fine powder like flour. Add water dropwise to form a dough. Roll the pills between the palms of several people until they are the size of sophora seeds. Dry them first in the shade, or sun-dry, or bake them until thoroughly dry. Then place them in a new crucible, cover the mouth with a round tile, and sit the crucible on bricks. Surround with three jin of charcoal, heating until red-hot. Pour the elixir into a dense porcelain dish using a bell-shaped crucible. The color should be white like jade frost. Take one or two pills per dose. Swallow with cold water on an empty stomach, and follow with dry food to suppress any potential adverse effects. Avoid warm substances. Do not take this medicine if pregnant or likely to become pregnant soon. If no calcining crucible is available, use two silver crucibles refined to hold fifty liang, divide the medicine into two parts, press firmly, and calcine. This medicine greatly treats deficiency-cold syndromes, strengthens the spleen and stomach, promotes appetite, and has significant efficacy. Halloysitum rubrum is called soft gypsum by people in the south.
Fan Zhongxuan Gong's Method for Refining Jin Ye Dan (Golden Liquid Elixir).
Transparent Sulfur (4 liang) Pig Fat (half jin)
First, crush the sulfur into small pieces. Use a stone pot to melt the pig fat into liquid, remove the fascia, then add the sulfur. Stir quickly with a willow branch. As soon as the sulfur melts, do not overheat, and immediately remove from fire. Prepare one cup of decoction, cover it with new cotton cloth, and pour the boiled sulfur and fat onto the cloth. The sulfur sinks, and the fat floats. Wait for it to cool, remove the fat, and wash the solidified sulfur with gleditsia sinensis decoction more than ten times until it is no longer sticky. Grind with a wooden pestle made of willow wood for three to five days until fine as powder. Soak in water, mix with steamed bread dough to form pills, the size of sophora seeds. Take thirty to fifty pills per dose, swallowed with rice drink. The "Handwritten Record of Chen Yingzhong" records this prescription: "This is the family method of Fan Zhongxuan Gong in Sichuan." Fan Zhongxuan took it daily regardless of age or health status, just as he enjoyed tea and meals. Because the sulfur is controlled by the fat, it does not remain in the zang-fu organs. Strengthening qi and nourishing true essence, nothing surpasses this; truly a method of immortals!
