Treating febrile diseases. The symptoms manifest initially as soreness and pain in the lower back and shins, with a preference for thirst and frequent drinking. The body feels cold; when cold, there is neck pain, aversion to cold, and soreness. The feet feel hot, there is a reluctance to speak, and the head feels heavy and painful.
First, needle Yongquan (KI 1) and the Jing-River points of the Taiyang channel. If there is heat within causing shortness of breath, cold limbs, and cold sensations, moxibustion should be applied to generate heat. Moxa three cones on Yongquan (KI 1). If there is vexation in the heart and lack of appetite, moxa on Yongquan (KI 1) removes the heat. If there are inverted cold limbs, panting, and shortness of breath, or hemiplegia causing sweating and chills, Xiashi (GB 43) should be selected.
Treating warm diseases where the body has been feverish for more than five days without sweat.
Needle Taiyuan (LU 9), retain the needle for one shichen (two hours), then remove it. If less than five days have passed, needling is prohibited.
For those who frequently sigh, lack appetite, feel much cold, sweat with heat, and tend to vomit upon onset of illness, with improvement after vomiting, select Gongsun (SP 4) at its Jing-Well and Shu-Stream points. Excess patterns present as severe cutting pain in the intestines.
Jue syndromes manifest as swelling of the head and face, initial vexation and mania, polydipsia, and unwillingness to lie down; deficiency patterns present as abdominal distension like a drum, excessive qi fullness in the abdomen, hot pain, and lack of appetite. Huoluan (cholera-like disorder) is primarily treated by Gongsun (SP 4).
Treating febrile diseases with vexation in the heart, cold and clear coldness in the feet, and profuse sweating.
First select RanGu (KI 2), then select TaiXi (KI 3) (both require tonification first).
The *Zisheng Jing* states: For all warm diseases, fifty-nine acupoints may be needled. Furthermore, there are six hundred and fifty-five acupoints on the body; thirty-six are harmful if moxa is applied, and seventy-nine are disastrous if needled.
Treating warm diseases, needle the temporal region (Note: Text implies specific points, translated literally as 'temporal point').
Moxibustion method for Yin-Du Cold Damage (Yin Toxin Shanghan). The condition presents as no restlessness, no thirst, blue lips, heaviness of the waist and back, pain in the throat and eyeballs, vexing pain in the heart and abdomen, retracted tongue, blue complexion, hiccuping and belching, panting, vomiting and counterflow, cold sweat, muteness facing darkness.
Use approximately ten fresh green onions, remove roots and coarse skin, roll them upside down on paper to a diameter of two cun, not too tight, allowing air passage. Cut quickly with a sharp knife into cakes half an cun high. Place on the center of the umbilicus. Use a moxa iron to heat the onion cake, replacing it when soft. No more than ten times, and the patient will revive. Afterwards, administer medicines to support healthy qi.
Moxibustion method for Jie-Xiong (Knotting Chest) Cold Damage. Symptoms include chest fullness, shortness of breath, pain upon pressure, vomiting and counterflow with chest oppression, or constipation, where all medicines fail.
Take seven bitter almonds (Ba Dou) with skin, seven cun of thick Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian), remove threads, pound together into one pill. Place on the center of the umbilicus, press firmly with hand.
Place a moxa cone larger than a soap bean on the medicine and moxa. For severe cases, three to five cones will cure immediately. Follow with tonic medicines for one to two days. If ill for half a month, even with faint qi, it can be cured.
Treating Qi deficiency and Yang collapse, cold body without pulse, breath nearly exhausted, unconsciousness, as well as Yin-Jue Cold Damage unresponsive to hundreds of medicines, use the Green Onion Ironing Method.
Tie green onions with rope to the size of a cup, cut off roots and leaves, keeping only the white part, about two cun long, forming large cakes. Heat one side with fire until thoroughly warm, add mugwort, ensuring it does not burn the patient. Place over the patient's umbilicus extending downwards. Fill the moxa iron with fire and iron over it, driving the heat from the onion cake into the muscles. Prepare three or four cakes in advance; replace when one is damaged. After a while, the patient should gradually awaken, hands and feet become warm, and sweating indicates recovery.
Subsequently administer Si Ni Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) or similar formulas to warm the interior, with absolute safety. Wang Shi said: My elder brother suffered from Cold Damage, unconscious for eight days, limbs hard and cold as stone, medicines could not enter. Using this method, he recovered. Scholar Hu Quanfu used this method to save countless lives in crisis.
Upon initial onset of illness, some present with headache, alternating chills and fever, trembling desire to seek fire, or stiff back and neck, facial appearance resembling drunkenness. This is Cold Damage in the first or second day. Apply fierce fire moxa to three points below the heart: Juque (CV 14), Shangwan (CV 13), and Weiwann (CV 12).
Moxa fifty cones at each point. Adults may receive fifty cones, children three cones, adjusted by age. Determine quantity according to circumstances.
For treating Cold Damage patients after three or four days.
It is appropriate to first moxa twenty cones on the upper chest. Then moxa two points at the temporal region. Then moxa Fengchi (GB 20) twice. Then moxa Taichong (LR 3) thirty cones, which is miraculous. Also moxa Ganshu (BL 18) one hundred cones, and twenty cones at other locations. Measure from the nose tip straight up to the hairline, fold the string in half and break it. Enter the hair from the hairline and moxa the end of the string, named Tiancong.
The *Zisheng Jing* states: For all Cold Damage, only Yin patterns may be moxa-ed; others should be needled. Thus, *Qianjin Fang* only mentions "needling," and *Suwen* also states that for severe diseases, use the Fifty-Nine Needles to drain heat from the Yang channels, chest, stomach, limbs, and five zang organs. If warm disease causes fever for five days or more without sweat, Taiyuan (LU 9) may be needled. Less than five days, needling is prohibited. However, *Qianjin Fang* moxas Juque (CV 14), Zhongwan (CV 12), and Shangwan (CV 13) for headache and alternating chills/fever. Is this also a Yin pattern? The symptom described as "trembling desire to seek fire" indicates this. Physicians must differentiate.
Treating febrile diseases with sudden mental distress (Ao Nao), frequent yawning and stretching, sadness and fear, dizziness, headache, red and hot face, palpitations, and elbow/arm pain. Excess patterns present with limb swelling; deficiency patterns present with inability to speak. If there is throat obstruction, shortness of breath, and urinary incontinence, select Tongli (HT 5).
Treating epidemic Cold Damage, select Zhongwan (CV 12).
Treating Cold Damage with somnolence, lethargy, unwillingness to move, constant dampness, and inability to eat, select Ge Shu (BL 17).
Treating febrile diseases with vexation and fullness, rising qi, heart pain, phlegm-cold, shortness of breath, sadness, fear, and susceptibility to fright, along with palm heat, chest pain, hot mouth, sour throat, alternating chills and fever, hand spasm unable to extend, and eye pain牵引, select Shaochong (HT 9).
Treating residual Cold Damage diseases with dry skin, select Quchi (LI 11).
Treating febrile diseases starting with several days of unhappiness, select Tongli (HT 5).
Treating febrile diseases with tremors, grinding teeth, abdominal fullness, impotence with unchanged color, select Yuji (LU 10) and Yanggu (SI 5).
Treating Qi obstruction with frequent vomiting, grinding teeth without sweat, select Chize (LU 5).
Treating head and body heat/redness, tremors, laxity of waist and limbs, desire to vomit, select Shenshu (BL 23).
Treating Qi-heat and body heat, panting with chills/fever, dry mouth, body heat with panting, urgent eye pain, susceptibility to fright, select Sanjian (LI 3).
Treating febrile diseases with chills, grinding teeth, abdominal fullness, impotence with unchanged color, select Yuji (LU 10).
Treating febrile diseases with vexation in the heart, stifled sweat, palm heat, heart pain, body heat like fire, and root of tongue pain, select Zhongchong (PC 9), Shaochong (HT 9), Guanchong (SJ 1), Laogong (PC 8), Daling (PC 7), Yangxi (LI 5), Tianjing (SJ 10), Neiguan (PC 6).
Treating febrile diseases with vexation and tendency to hiccups, calm feeling in the chest, restlessness with heat, select Neiguan (PC 6).
Treating vexation and tendency to vomiting, select Juque (CV 14).
Treating Cold Damage and warm diseases with body heat, vexation, and dry mouth, select Quze (PC 3).
Treating febrile diseases starting with shin soreness, thirst with frequent eating/drinking, body heat with stiff neck pain, tremors, chills/fever, neck swelling. Excess patterns cause elbow spasm and dizziness/headache; deficiency patterns cause warts, small ones like scabies. Select Zhengjing (SI 7) and Shaohai (HT 3).
Treating tremors and neck pain, select Tianjing (TE 10).
Treating febrile diseases with spine pain, select Weizhong (BL 40).
Treating Cold Damage with stiff neck, frequent swallowing difficulty, nasal discharge of clear fluid, select Fengmen (BL 12).
Wang Shi said: Yin-Du is deep and debilitating, medicines are difficult to work. Only moxa the umbilicus three hundred cones, moxa cones the size of half a date. If hands and feet are not warm, it is incurable.
Or if there is heart confusion, deafness, shouting without response, caused by eating cold foods, I have used Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) to save several people. If thirsty, decoct Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) to drink, or decoct Ginseng Tang. All are effective. It is also said: Cold Damage mostly arises from wind-cold. Initially, wind-cold enters the exterior; once cold enters the interior, it cannot dissipate. There is no case where warm administration fails to dissipate it.
Treating Cold Damage Jie-Xiong (Knotting Chest), select Zhigou (TE 6), Neiguan (PC 6), and Xingjian (LR 2).
Treating Cold Damage at the exterior, with fever, aversion to cold, headache and neck pain, stiff back and spine, no sweat, floating pulse at Cun and Chi positions, select Hegu (LI 4).
Treating Cold Damage from excessive water intake, abdominal distension, panting, unbearable epigastric pain, select Zhongwan (CV 12) and Qihai (CV 6).
Treating Cold Damage with Qi rushing in the lower abdomen, select Tianshu (ST 25), Qichong (ST 30), Zusanli (ST 36), and Sanyinjiao (SP 6).
Treating Cold Damage with inverted cold limbs, select Dadu (SP 2), Neiting (ST 44), TaiXi (KI 3), and Xingjian (LR 2).
Treating Cold Damage with intermingled sweat failure, select Fengchi (GB 20), Xiashi (GB 43), Yuji (LU 10), Jingqu (LU 8), and Neiting (ST 44).
Treating Cold Damage with persistent heat in the chest, select Dazhu (BL 11), Fengmen (BL 12), Zhongfu (LU 1), and Quepen (CV 15).
Treating Cold Damage with persistent heat in the stomach, select Zhongwan (CV 12), Zusanli (ST 36), Shanglian (ST 37), Xialian (ST 39), and Qichong (ST 30).
Treating Cold Damage with persistent heat in the four limbs, select Yunmen (LU 2), Jianliao (TE 14), Weizhong (BL 40), and Yaoshu (BL 23).
Treating acute food stagnation and Cold Damage water accumulation, select Sanjian (LI 3), Hegu (LI 4), and Chengshan (BL 57).
Treating Yin-pattern Cold Damage with cold limbs, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, stiff body, restlessness, spontaneous sweating, fine and deep pulse, or red face.
All Three-Yin internal cold should be moxa-ed. Select Xangu (ST 43), moxa twenty-one cones. If body temperature rises, pulse flows, and sweat appears, it is effective. Otherwise, moxa again with double the mugwort.
Treating sudden food poisoning resembling Cold Damage, where the person only wants to sleep. If untreated for seven days, it is fatal. Press both sides of the spine; there should be depressions. Moxa seven cones at each end of the depression, then it heals.
Treating Cold Damage just acquired in one or two days.
One may moxa the vertex three cones. Also moxa Dazhui (GV 14) three cones, adding up to five cones is better. Verified efficacy. Dazhui aligns with shoulders, slanting, prominent.
Do not invade the neck division to take points, which is incorrect. Above connects to the neck bone, below aligns with shoulders, located on the vertebral joint. Other points are all below the joints. Moxa and needle techniques must not err by a hair's breadth. Currently, Cui Shi does not fix heights, hence this statement. From *Huangdi Zhenjiu Jing*.
To prevent Warm Disease transmission and treat seasonal miasma epidemics.
Use honey-moxa on the four corners of the patient's bed, one cone each, without letting the patient know. This is best.
Moxibustion method for Yin-Du Cold Damage.
Use dried mugwort leaves, pounded熟 and ash removed, form moxa cones. Moxa Yihuaxia (below umbilicus) one cun three fen, named Qihai (CV 6). Two cun is Dantian (CV 12). Three cun is Guanyuan (CV 4). Fifty to two or three hundred cones. When hands and feet gradually warm and consciousness slightly returns, it is treatable.
Moxibustion method for Yin-pattern Cold Damage.
At Qihai (CV 6), one cun half below the umbilicus. Moxa fourteen cones. Make small moxa cones on the umbilicus center. Fill with salt. Moxa seven cones for immediate effect. Dantian (CV 12) two cun and Guanyuan (CV 4) three cun can also be moxa-ed.
Treating pea-pox appearing after febrile diseases, moxa three cones on the styloid process of both wrists, left for males, right for females.
Treating Cold Damage with intense heat, vexation, and vomiting, select Dazhui (GV 14).
Treating febrile diseases with lateral headache drawing pain to the outer canthus, select Xuanli (GB 5) and Jiawei (CV 15).
Treatment for recurring fatigue after seasonal Qi disorders begins.
For males, upon initial sensation, moxa Yin (perineum) fourteen cones. If insufficient, up to one hundred cones will cure. Eyes are unaffected. Genital ulcers return to normal.
Treating severe Cold Damage heat with the Fifty-Nine Needles. The Fifty-Nine Needles refer to five rows on the head to overcome heat in all Yang channels. Points: Dazhu (BL 11), Ying Shu (likely Feishu BL 13 or similar chest points), Quepen (CV 15), Shenshu (BL 23) (these eight drain chest heat); Qichong (ST 30), Zusanli (ST 36), Shangjuxu (ST 37), Xiajuxu (ST 39) (these eight drain stomach heat); Yunmen (LU 2), Jugu (SI 1), Weizhong (BL 40), Naokong (GB 13) (these eight drain limb heat); Five flanking points of the Five Zang Shu (BL 15-21) (these ten drain organ heat). These fifty-nine points are on the left and right of the back. For severe diseases, they should be needled. The method of needling: inhale to insert needle, drain upon obtaining Deqi, do not delay. Withdraw like releasing a trigger. Thus, *Zhenjing* says: For heat, hasten it.
Needling febrile diseases without sweat. In Cold Damage and febrile diseases, lack of sweat is due to non-interaction of Ying and Wei, and disharmony of Yin and Yang. Therefore, no sweat. One should needle Fujie (ST 26) and Fushhe (ST 25) to unblock meridians, harmonize Yin and Yang, and induce sweat.
Hand-Yangming has Shangyang (LI 1) and Hegu (LI 4). Hand-Taiyang has Wangu (SI 4) and Yanggu (SI 5). Foot-Shaoyang has Xiashi (GB 43). Foot-Yangming has Lidui (ST 45). Hand-Jueyin has Laogong (PC 8).
These seven points all treat febrile diseases without sweat. Differentiate pulse by channel, regulate Yin and Yang, combine Ying and Wei, to allow sweat. The Ying-Spring points of the twelve channels all treat body heat, as body heat is primarily Southern Fire. Thus, the classics say: Ying governs body heat; all may be needled.
Needling Cold Damage Jie-Xiong (Knotting Chest) and Pi-Qi (Stagnant Qi).
After purgation in Cold Damage, Jie-Xiong and Pi-Qi arise. These are the endings of the Three Foot-Yin channels and beginnings of the Three Hand-Yin channels. Chest knotting and stagnation relate to Foot-Shaoyin Kidney and Hand-Jueyin Pericardium.
Needle the Jing-Well and Yuan-Source points of these two channels to drain Qi in the chest. Heart knotting and stagnation relate to Foot-Taiyin Spleen and Hand-Shaoyin Heart. Needle the Jing-Well and Yuan-Source points of these two channels to drain Qi in the heart. Stomach knotting and stagnation relate to Foot-Jueyin Liver and Hand-Taiyin Lung. Needle the Jing-Well and Yuan-Source points of these two channels to drain Qi in the stomach. Or at Upper, Middle, and Lower Guan (likely referring to wrist areas), drain corresponding stagnation.
Method for treating Three-Yang headaches in Cold Damage. How to needle Three-Yang headaches in Cold Damage? Answer: The Three Hand-Yang and Three Foot-Yang channels all converge at the head, called the Meeting of All Yang. Pathogens lodge and remain, thus called Three-Yang headache. Observe color and pulse to determine which channel and select points.
If pulse is floating with headache, the pathogen is in Hand and Foot Taiyang. Needle Wangu (SI 4) and Jinggu (BL 64).
If pulse is floating and long, the pathogen is in Hand and Foot Yangming. Needle Hegu (LI 4) and Chongyang (ST 42).
If pulse is floating and wiry, the pathogen is in Hand and Foot Shaoyang. Needle Yangchi (TE 4), Qiuxu (GB 40), Fengfu (GV 16), and Fengchi (GB 20). The above points constitute the method for needling Three-Yang headaches.
Method for treating Three-Yin abdominal pain in Cold Damage. Pathogens in the Three Yin fail to communicate, causing abdominal pain. Hand and Foot channels all converge at the abdomen. Select points according to the channel.
If pulse is wiry with abdominal pain, the pathogen is in Foot-Jueyin Liver and Hand-Taiyin Lung. Needle Taichong (LR 3), Taiyuan (LU 9), and Daling (PC 7).
If pulse is deep with abdominal pain, the pathogen is in Foot-Shaoyin Kidney and Hand-Jueyin Pericardium. Needle TaiXi (KI 3) and Daling (PC 7).
If pulse is fine and deep with abdominal pain, the pathogen is in Foot-Taiyin Spleen and Hand-Shaoyin Heart. Needle Taibai (SP 3), Shenmen (HT 7), and Sanyinjiao (SP 6).
The above points constitute the method for needling Three-Yin abdominal pain.
Moxa-Shaoyuan Rescue Pulse Method.
Treating Cold Damage Yin disease with pulse nearing exhaustion, one should moxa TaiXi (KI 3). TaiXi is the Yuan-Source point of Foot-Shaoyin Kidney. Shaoyin disease belongs to Water. Yin Qi is too abundant, Yang Qi cannot circulate. Thus, drain Yin and tonify Yang. Yin-Du Cold Damage presents with heavy body, heavy limbs, abdominal pain, faint and slow pulse. One should moxa Qihai (CV 6) or Guanyuan (CV 4). Since the pulse belongs to Shaoyin, the same method of draining Yin and tonifying Yang applies.
Differentiating Cold Damage Medicines and Attaching Acupuncture Methods.
When Cold Damage channels combine with the exterior, needles and medicines cause spontaneous sweating, leading to continuous leakage. Needle Fengfu (GV 16) and Fengchi (GB 20), then administer Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction). When Cold Damage channels combine with the interior, moxa TaiXi (KI 3) seven cones, then administer Tongmai Sini Tang (Pulse-Recovering Frigid Extremities Decoction). This is the Exterior-Interior method of Taiyang and Shaoyin. Thus, the exterior may be needled at Taiyang, and the interior moxa-ed at Shaoyin.
Cold Damage needling Qimen (LR 14).
Taiyang disease with headache, dizziness, and epigastric fullness: needle Feishu (BL 13) and Ganshu (BL 18). Do not induce sweating. Sweating will cause incessant delirious speech. One should needle Qimen (LR 14).
Headache and dizziness are Taiyang channel diseases, sweating is permissible. Epigastric fullness indicates pathogen transmitting to the interior; sweating is forbidden. Needle Feishu (BL 13) to seize the pathogen. Both points are in the Taiyang channel. This is high-low needling. Reckless sweating depletes interior fluids, transmitting to Yangming, causing incessant delirious speech. If not yet fully solidified, drain the Liver channel by needling Qimen (LR 14), fearing transmission to Spleen and Stomach.
Cold Damage with abdominal fullness and delirious speech, Cun and Kou pulses floating and tight. This is Liver overacting on Spleen, named Cong (Following). Needle Qimen (LR 14). Abdominal fullness and delirious speech involve Taiyin and Yangming channels. Floating and tight pulse is Liver pulse. Thus, wife overcoming husband is named Cong; needle Qimen (LR 14).
Cold Damage with fever, slight aversion to cold, great thirst wanting water, abdominal fullness, spontaneous sweating, and free urination. This is Liver overacting on Lung, named Heng (Horizontal). Needle Qimen (LR 14).
Fever and slight aversion to cold indicate Lung disease. Great thirst indicates heat in the Upper Jiao. Spontaneous sweating indicates exterior deficiency. Free urination indicates interior harmony. Wife overcoming husband is named Heng; needle Qimen (LR 14).
Moxibustion method for Cold Damage cough and counterflow.
*Shibian Liangfang* states: Patients with Huoluan vomiting and diarrhea, near death, suddenly develop cough and counterflow. Within half a day, they reach critical condition. Someone said there is a moxa method for cough and counterflow. For all Cold Damage and diseases developing cough and counterflow, it is a bad omen. If medicines fail, moxa will surely cure. I ordered moxa. Upon fire arrival, cough and counterflow settled. The method: One finger width below the nipple, directly aligned with the nipple, in the bony depression. For women, bend the nipple to measure; the level of the nipple tip is the point. Moxa cone the size of a small bean, three cones. Males moxa left, females moxa right, only one site. Upon fire arrival, it heals immediately. If not healed, it is mostly incurable.
Treating faint and thin pulse, or absent pulse temporarily.
Use a round-pointed needle to needle Fuliu (KI 7) of the Foot-Shaoyin channel, in the depression two cun above the medial malleolus. Insert needle to the bone, follow the needle downward. Wait for the returning Yang pulse to become large, then remove the needle.
Treating Cold Damage from excessive water intake, abdominal distension, and panting, select Zhongwan (CV 12).
Treating febrile diseases with body numbness, chilliness, and hypochondriac fullness/pain, needle Xangu (ST 43). Feet feel cold ascending to the knee, then remove the needle.
Treating Cold Damage with Qi-heat, body heat, and panting, select Sanjian (LI 3).
Treating Cold Damage passing stages without resolution, needle Qimen (LR 14) twice on the Foot-Jueyin channel to prevent transmission. In treating Cold Damage, differentiate the Foot Three-Yin and Three-Yang channels, examine carefully, and needle. Zhang Zhongjing's Cold Damage transmits through Foot channels, not Hand channels; this is what is meant.
