谨书以纪此本末云。至大辛亥建安静斋窦柱方序。
Acupuncture and moxibustion techniques are profound and mysterious, making it difficult to fully explore their subtle gates. Famous practitioners of past dynasties have often followed ancestral traditions; however, their guiding principles differ, and key essentials are presented mutually. Some are hidden and hard to understand, while others clarify the origins. Now, I have collected previous classics, studied and verified their ultimate principles, pointed out what earlier sages had not realized, and elucidated the subtle words of ancient holy ones. By comprehensively reviewing various refined and profound classics, exhausting reason and nature, penetrating into the obscure and profound, stating the pathways of acupoints to achieve thorough understanding, and indicating disease sources to ensure completeness, I aim to illuminate those who are unenlightened and guide those lost in confusion, transmitting this to future generations for enduring dissemination.
Moxibustion and acupuncture possess the merit of rescuing patients from illness; this statement is indeed credible. In using needles, one must clearly understand the acupoints; in applying moxa, one must determine the measurements. If acupoints are clear and measurements are fixed, then regarding ailments located above the *gao* (fatty tissue) and below the *huang* (diaphragm/marrow), why worry about the failure to cure such stubborn diseases? In the past, Sun Simiao (Sun Zhenren) said: "A physician who knows herbs but does not know acupuncture, or knows acupuncture but does not know moxibustion, is insufficient to be considered a superior physician. One must master all three—herbs, acupuncture, and moxibustion—to truly discuss medicine." My late father, Hanqing Gong, was highly regarded by officials for his expertise in herbs and moxa. For instance, Wu Xian of Yuyan borrowed this reputation to obtain the position of Assistant Instructor for Medical Officers in the Censorate. Da Qi You Xian personally inscribed his medicine room with the plaque "Huoji Tang" (Hall of Living Relief). Since the Bingzi year of the Zhiyuan era, I traveled through Jianghuai carrying my father's medical skills, where I met a worthy person who taught me acupuncture methods and gifted me three books: *Ziwu Liuzhu* (Midnight-Noon Ebb-Flow), *Zhen Jing* (Classic of Acupuncture), and *Dou Hanqing Zhen Jing Zhi Nan* (Guide to Dou Hanqing's Classic of Acupuncture). I respectfully accepted them, treasured them, and pondered over them, gaining significant progress. I was also delighted that their names and medical expertise matched those of my late father. Thus, I composed a verse saying: "There are two HanQings, North and South, sharing the same surname and name, and both practicing medicine identically. The Northern HanQing received the Daoist needle method, mastered the Eight Confluent Points to cure diseases, gained fame in the world, and rose to the rank of Grand Preceptor. The Southern HanQing lived in seclusion pursuing his aspirations, relying solely on herbs and moxa to accumulate merit by saving people and benefiting the world. From this, we can see the truth. Differences in temperament between North and South mean that when successful, one becomes a minister; when unsuccessful, one becomes a doctor. This stems from differences in their ambitions and choices of engagement." Now, having personally transmitted the verified guidebook on needle methods, along with the two volumes of *Dou Hanqing Zhen Jing* published by Official Niu, I have cross-referenced and corrected errors. Combined with the inherited *Ziwu Liuzhu Zhen Jing*, the family-held *Huangdi Mingtang Jiu Jing* (Yellow Emperor's Bright Hall Moxibustion Classic), and Zhuang Jiyu's compiled *Jiu Gaohuang Fa Xue* (Methods and Acupoints for Moxibustion on Gaohuang), these four texts have been carefully proofread and newly printed. I have titled this collection *Zhen Jiu Si Shu* (Four Books of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) and am pleased to share it with physicians everywhere. May my like-minded colleagues pay attention to this book; if they master herbs, acupuncture, and moxibustion together, they may advance to become superior physicians, thereby not failing the teachings left by Sun Zhenren. I hereby record the origin and details of this edition. Preface by Dou Zhufang of Jian Anjing Zhai, in the Xinhai year of the Zhida era.
