After childbirth, the Chong (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren (Conception Vessel) are both deficient. Qi and blood deviate from their normal meridians, and lack proper care. The flow of Qi becomes sluggish, and lochia (postpartum discharge) fails to discharge smoothly. This causes irritability, dizziness, chest tightness, hardness and pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions. By promoting the discharge of stagnant blood and regulating the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang, the illness can be cured; if untreated, it may transform into postpartum masses (Zheng Jia) and emaciation syndromes. Cases of stabbing pain in the abdomen due to stagnant blood after childbirth occur because of internal organ deficiency or the presence of wind-cold pathogens, causing the lochia to stagnate and fail to circulate freely. All these conditions result from insufficient lochia discharge during delivery, leaving residual blood within the uterine collaterals...
