Disease. It should be treated as an epidemic disease. Besides using methods to ward off evil pathogens, for dampness, use Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder) with added Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root); for wind, use Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) with added Huangqin (Scutellaria Root). There is no case that does not heal. As for other complex intermingling of pathogenic factors,
It treats all Tianxing (epidemic) diseases.
Take the white medicine mentioned above and grind it into a powder. Take one large cup of Jiangshui (sour rice water) on an empty stomach. Lie supine for the duration of one meal. Wait until you feel stuffiness and confusion in the heart region, or nausea, and abdominal rumbling pain like a turning cart wheel. After a while, there should be several episodes of vomiting and diarrhea. Do not be surprised. Before taking the medicine, first cook Jiangshui porridge, hang it in a well to cool. If vomiting or diarrhea occurs,
To treat epidemic heat diseases, this method is also suitable for inducing sweating and is very effective.
Take one liang of Fuping Grass (Moss) collected on the fifteenth day of the fourth lunar month, Mahuang (Ephedra Stem) with nodes and roots removed, Guixin (Cinnamon Heart), and Pao Lide Piqu Qi Fuzi (Processed Aconite Root with skin and lateral roots removed). Each half a liang. Crush the four substances finely and sieve. Take two qian per dose. Add two large cups of water and half a fen of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). Decoct until six parts remain. Take hot with the dregs at any time. Recovery occurs when sweat appears.
Another prescription:
Huoyan San (Flame Powder) (from *Yonglei Qianfang*) treats severe conditions of Shanghan (Cold Damage).
Boshang Liuhuang (Imported Sulfur), Fuzi (Aconite Root, raw, peeled), Xin La Cha (New Wax Tea) (each one liang). Grind the above substances into a fine powder. First, mix the medicine with one sheng of good wine. Distribute into new large bowls. Evaporate the wine over fire until dry. Place the bowls upside down on tiles. Burn a fist-sized amount of cooked Aiye (Mugwort Leaf) under each bowl. Support the bowl with a tile so the flame does not touch it directly. Continue until the smoke is exhausted and cooled. Scrape off the residue and grind finely. Store in a porcelain jar. Take two qian per dose. Decoct with one cup of wine until seven parts remain. Do not be alarmed if flames appear. Yin Du (Yin Toxin) from Shanghan presents with cold limbs, deep and fine pulse, vomiting or diarrhea, five-palm heat and irritability, chest oppression and hardness, or transformation into latent Yang inside, unable to swallow soup or water. Take one dose first. If vomiting occurs, take another dose. After taking the medicine, if the heart feels hot, the disease is healed. The medicine descends to the zang-fu organs. If the exterior syndrome is not resolved, with high fever and surging-large pulse, use exterior-releasing medicines. If the exterior is resolved, fever ceases, sleep becomes possible, and the body sweats. If there is slight stagnation and a solid pulse, only then can purgative medicines acting on the zang-fu be used. Gradually use medicines to harmonize the spleen and stomach and tonify Yuan Qi.
Jiti Pen San (Urgent Basin Raising Powder) (from *Qianjin Fang*) treats miscellaneous diseases that are not Yin syndromes.
Take Caowutou (Aconitum Carmichaelii Radix Lateralis Preparata) of Caowutou (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) in any quantity. Grind raw into an extremely fine powder. Take one fat Cong (Scallion), remove the root hairs. Dip the round head in Cong juice. Warm it and dip into the powder. Insert longitudinally into the Guydao (anus).
Treatment for disheveled hair after illness, Tongtou Fa (Method to Unblock Hair).
Take two sheng of Sheng Mayou (Raw Sesame Oil). Untie the hair. Place it in a clean copper sieve. Soak in oil. Slowly comb the hair with a hairpin. Soon it will naturally become smooth.
Another method (from *Zhouhou Fang*) treats excruciating pain in hands and feet due to Shanghan.
Boil Niushi (Cow Dung) in water and administer. Stop when cured. It also treats heat swelling of the scrotum and penis caused by epidemic diseases. One can also wash with boiled Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark).
Wuyou San (Powder of No Worries) (from *Weishi Fang*) treats disordered regulation after Shanghan. Toxic qi knots internally, causing chest and abdominal fullness, restlessness in sitting and lying. Long-standing non-healing, delirious speech.
La Yue Huang Niu Dan (Gallbladder of a yellow ox slaughtered in the twelfth lunar month) (Place Tian Nan Xing (Arisaema Rhizome) powder inside the gallbladder, tie tightly, hang in the wind away from the sun until dry, then take for use). Grind the above into powder. Use Banliang (half a liang) of Renshen (Ginseng Root). Decoct in seven-tenths of a cup of water. Mix with two qian of powder. Take while hot. Shortly after, drink more hot Renshen decoction. Expelling yellow-black foul matter via saliva, urination, or defecation indicates efficacy.
Treatment for Shanghan, Ruan Henan's Steaming Method.
Burn firewood to heat the ground. After a long time, sweep away the fire. Sprinkle a little water. Can use Can Sha (Silkworm Droppings), or Tao Ye (Peach Leaves), Sang Ye (Mulberry Leaves), Bai Ye (Cypress Leaves). Various rice bran and wheat chaff can be used, choosing whatever is easy to obtain. Cow or horse manure can also be used, though it smells. When Tao Ye is about to fall, collect and dry them. Spread these materials thickly (two to three cun) on the heated area. Lay a mat and lie on it. Cover warmly. Use this method to induce sweating; sweat will emerge. If too hot, adjust carefully. For severe heat, use double mats. Once sweat covers the whole body, stop. Apply Wen Fen (warm powder) to the body. Avoid wind exposure.
Treating acute Shanghan
Use Jingjie (Schizonepeta Spike) and Chi Zhi (Fermented Soybean Juice). Decoct and take.
Miraculous Formula for Shanghan regardless of Yin or Yang.
Take one thick stick of Zhaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit). Burn until red-hot. Grind into powder. Mix with five he of water. Take in one dose. For Yin or Yang Shanghan, mix with wine.
Treating Taiyang Shanghan
Use Gualou Gen (Trichosanthes Root) two liang. Water five sheng. Boil to obtain one and a half sheng. Divide into two doses. Cured when urination becomes smooth.
Shendan Wan (Divine Pill) (from *Shenghui Fang*) treats Shanghan with choppy pulse, aversion to cold, fever, and body pain.
Zhusha (Cinnabar, two liang, finely ground and washed with water), Fuzi (Aconite Root, one and a half liang, processed, peeled, lateral roots removed), Chifuling (Red Poria, one liang), Chuawutou (Sichuan Aconite Root, one and a half liang, processed, peeled, lateral roots removed), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, one liang, washed seven times in hot water to remove slipperiness), Renshen (Ginseng Root, one liang, rhizome removed). Grind into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds.
Take five pills per dose with Shengjiang Tang (Fresh Ginger Decoction). After a while, drink one cup of hot porridge to assist. Recovery is indicated by sweating. If no sweat, or insufficient sweat with no relief, repeat the previous method. If sufficient sweat is obtained but symptoms persist, take Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction). This medicine is toxic. Those with heat should drink water; those with cold should drink warm fluids to resolve toxicity. For malaria, take two pills before onset. In *Yuelue*, use Xixin (Asarum Root) instead of Renshen, plus Shegan (Belamcanda Rhizome) and one Jzao (Chinese Date), named Chidan (Red Pill), treating Cold Qi Jueni (Reversal).
Liuli Qing San Formula (from *Shenghui Fang*)
Chuawutou (Sichuan Aconite Root, one liang, processed, peeled, lateral roots removed), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root, one liang, rhizome removed), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, one liang), Fuzi (Aconite Root, one liang, processed, peeled, lateral roots removed), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, one liang, rhizome removed), Xixin (Asarum Root, one liang). Grind into powder. Take two qian per dose, mixed with Shengjiang Tang (Fresh Ginger Decoction). If no sweat appears after a short while, drink one cup of thin porridge to induce sweating. Cover warmly to sweat. Do not allow profuse dripping sweat. If sweat flows excessively and uncontrollably, apply warm powder. If no sweat, take again. Aim for sweating as the goal.
Jupi Tang (Tangerine Peel Decoction) (from *Shenghui Fang*) treats Taiyin disease unresolved. Although sudden irritability and diarrhea occurring more than ten times a day stops spontaneously. The reason it stops is because the Spleen house is real (replete), expelling rotten decay.
Chen Jupi (Aged Tangerine Peel, one liang, soaked in water, white pith removed, dried), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, one liang). Finely cut and mixed evenly. Divide into four doses. Each dose uses one medium cup of water. Decoct until six parts remain. Remove dregs. Take warm at any time.
Guizhi Shaoyao Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Peony Decoction) (from *Shenghui Fang*) treats Taiyin disease after purgation, presenting with abdominal fullness and intermittent pain.
Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Chishao Yao (Red Peony Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root, rhizome removed, each one liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, half a liang, honey-fried, slightly reddened, cut). Grind into powder. Take four qian per dose. Use one medium cup of water... [Text cuts off here in source, implying standard decoction process].
Shu Fuzi Tang (Atractylodes and Aconite Decoction) (from *Yonglei Qianfang*) treats wind-deficiency causing heavy and dizzy head. Severe suffering, loss of taste. Warms muscles. Tonifies middle, benefits essence and qi.
Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, two liang), Fuzi (Aconite Root, one and a half pieces, processed, peeled), Gancao (Licorice Root, one liang, honey-fried). Cut into pieces. Each dose uses five qian-bi (spoonfuls), three slices of ginger, three dates. One and a half cups of water. Decoct until seven parts remain. Remove dregs. Take warm.
Qi Wu Huanglian Tang (Seven-Ingredient Coptis Decoction) treats Shanghan in summer. Irritating pain in four limbs. Fever. Patient prone to irritability. Vomiting, reversal, limb fullness. Severe cases feel like possessed. Cold and heat struggle.
Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, eighteen zhu), Fuling (Poria, eighteen zhu), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, eighteen zhu), Shaoyao (Peony Root), Gegen (Kudzu Root, each one liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, one liang and six zhu), Xiaomai (Wheat, three he). Cut each ingredient. Use seven sheng of water. Boil to obtain three sheng. Cool and divide into three doses. If unable to take one sheng, take small amounts gradually. Rest when condition stabilizes. The medicine detoxifies. After taking, chest heat and throat pain will heal. On the next day, boil another dose and take as directed. This decoction is non-toxic, removes heat, directs qi downward, and calms the patient. For children, take one-third. Use four sheng of water, boil to two sheng. Take small amounts gradually.
Chaihu Yinzi (Bupleurum Drink) resolves lingering residual heat of Shanghan in adults and children.
Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Digupi (Dogwood Root Bark), Chifuling (Red Poria), Chishaoyao (Red Peony Root), Longdancao (Gentian Root) (each half a liang). Cut. Take four qian per dose. One cup of water. Add Bohe (Mint) and Shatang (Rock Sugar). Decoct together until seven parts remain. Take warm at any time. Children divide into three doses.
Modified Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder).
Among medicines, Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder) is the treasure, specifically treating Shanghan with great merit. For Yang syndromes, remove Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig). For Yin, add Fuzi (Aconite Root), decoct in water and clarify. For delirious speech, add Chen Shan Mo (Cinnabar Powder). For head and eye pain, add Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome). For cough, add more Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry). For unsettled heart qi, add Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber). For stomach vomiting, Renshen (Ginseng Root) is excellent. For much phlegm, Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) meets well. For wheezing, Madouling (Aristolochia Root) is best. For removing dampness and empty abdomen, Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome). For blocked urination, add Qumai (Dianthus Herb). Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) can promote bowel movement. For abdominal gas masses, Sanleng (Burreed Tuber) powder. Qingpi (Green Tangerine Peel) reduces heat like baking. Using Mahuang Gen (Ephedra Root) stops night sweats. For lower body red swelling, add Jiaohong (Pepper Red).
