(Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, Qianghuo) Banliang (approx. 15g), add Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi) Wuxian (approx. 15g), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) Banliang (approx. 15g; increase dosage if sweating persists). The above are ground into powder. Take one piece of Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma (Shengjiang) and three Jujubae Fructus (Zao), decoct together.
The Classics state: Those with sweating should not take Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang); those without sweating should not take Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi). If this rule is violated and the condition worsens, the complications are countless. Therefore, this method is established to avoid violating the contraindications of the Three Yang meridians. This is a divine formula for resolving the exterior.
Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo) Liangban (approx. 37.5g): It is the sovereign drug for treating limb and joint pain in the Taiyang meridian, serving as the master that restores order from chaos. Thus, it penetrates deeply and broadly; joint pain cannot be cured without it. Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) Liangban (approx. 37.5g): Treats generalized body pain; its role is like a subordinate officer, obeying the sovereign's command and acting according to guidance, reaching wherever directed. Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu) Liangban (approx. 37.5g): Possesses a vigorous ascending qi that can dispel dampness and stabilize the Taiyin meridian, preventing pathogenic factors from transmitting internally to the Foot-Taiyin Spleen. Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin) Wuqian (approx. 15g): Treats headache caused by Kidney deficiency or cold in the Foot-Shaoyin meridian. Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) Liang (approx. 30g): Treats headache in the brain caused by the Jueyin meridian. Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi) Liang (approx. 30g): Treats frontal headache caused by the Yangming meridian. Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdihuang) Liang (approx. 30g): Treats internal heat in the Shaoyin Heart. Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) Liang (approx. 30g): Treats chest heat in the Taiyin Lung. Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) Liang (approx. 30g): Can relieve internal urgency and harmonize all herbs, hence known as the "State Elder." Although these nine ingredients form one prescription, they should not be applied rigidly. Rigidity without flexibility is equivalent to stubbornness. One must observe the differences in the meridians (front, back, left, right) and adjust the dosage based on the severity, magnitude, and weight of the condition. The efficacy will be miraculous.
Crush the herbs and decoct with water for oral administration. For rapid diaphoresis, take hot and consume warm broth/congee to assist; for mild diaphoresis, take warm without consuming broth to induce sweat.
If the pulse is floating but the condition does not resolve, start with rapid diaphoresis and switch to mild later. If the pulse is deep but the condition does not resolve, start with mild diaphoresis and switch to rapid later. Jiwei Qianghuo Tang (Nine-Ingredient Notopterygium Decoction) is not only effective for resolving the exterior but also has miraculous effects in treating miscellaneous diseases. For wind-stroke with pathogens traveling through the collaterals, add Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi). For wind-stroke with constipation and dryness, add Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang). For wind-stroke complicated by Bi-syndrome (painful obstruction), etc., adjust according to the Twelve Meridians, upper/lower, interior/exterior, cold/heat, warmth/cold, and the Six Qi of the four seasons, using addition, subtraction, tonification, and purgation methods. It can also be made into pills with refined honey. Adding equal parts of Rehmanniae Radix (Shengdihuang) makes it highly effective for Lianggan Shanghan (Double-Yang Cold Damage). Decoct with Doulin Jiu (Bean-leaven Wine) to treat Po Shuang Feng (Traumatic Tetanus).
When Taiyang Shanghan transmits inward, there is heat in the chest and pathogenic qi in the stomach; this is the transmission to the Yangming organ system. Symptoms include abdominal pain and desire to vomit, indicating heat inside. Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction) is appropriate.
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) (each 7.5 qian approx. 28g), Jujubae Fructus (Dazao) 3 pieces. Cut finely. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct with water and drink.
For fever with aversion to cold, spontaneous sweating, and a slow pulse; or fever with aversion to wind, no sweating, and a slow pulse: These two syndromes were originally treated by Yi Shui Lao Ren (Zhang Yuansu) using Guizhi Er Mahuang Yi Tang (Two Parts Cinnamon Twig Decoction to One Part Ephedra Decoction), but later changed to Jiwei Qianghuo Tang. It is suitable for use regardless of whether there is sweating or not.
Yi Shui Lao Ren's method for resolving exterior pathogens is Jiwei Qianghuo Tang.
To treat Shanghan causing tight lips:
Burn Biejiia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) and its head to ash, grind into powder, and apply externally.
To treat Shanghan with high fever and mental restlessness:
Burn Huaimiao (Sophorae Semen) to ash while retaining its nature, grind into powder, and take with wine using a Fangcunbi (approx. 5-10g measure).
To treat inability to sweat, spasms, waist and leg pain, and deafness:
Soak Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma) in Rice Vinegar. Soak for four days in summer, six days in winter. Grind into powder, mix with vinegar soup, and take 3 qian.
To treat confusion after sweating:
Burn an old fan to powder, mix with rice flour, and dust on the body.
Diaphoretic Method (from *Lei Zheng Huo Ren Shu* / *Classified Examples of the Living Book*)
Generally, diaphoresis should be uniform over the hands and feet, lasting about the time of a meal. It should not be profuse like dripping water. Stop medication once the disease is resolved; do not necessarily finish the entire dose.
However, if symptoms persist, within three days, diaphoresis may be induced two or three times, until sweat covers the waist and legs uniformly.
Another method: In the absence of medicine, cross fingers and firmly tap the Fengfu (GV16) acupoint at the back of the neck. Bow forward more than a hundred times. Sweat will appear, and the illness will resolve spontaneously (from *Shen Xiao Fang* / *Divine Efficacy Prescriptions*).
