Song on the Five Movements and Six Qi of Cold Damage (Shanghan)
In years with Heavenly Stems Jia (甲) and Ji (己), Earth Movement (Tu Yun) prevails. In years with Yi (乙) and Geng (庚), Metal Movement (Jin Yun) prevails. In years with Ding (丁) and Ren (壬), Wood Movement (Mu Yun) prevails, flourishing like a forest. In years with Bing (丙) and Xin (辛), Water Movement (Shui Yun) prevails, clarifying turbidity. In years with Wu (戊) and Gui (癸), Fire Movement (Huo Yun) prevails, invading from the South like flames.
Song on the Six Qi of Cold Damage
In years with Earthly Branches Zi (子) and Wu (午), Sovereign Fire (Jun Huo) governs Shaoyin Heart (Shao Yin Xin). In years with Chou (丑) and Wei (未), Spleen Earth (Pi Tu) exists as Taiyin Dampness (Tai Yin Shi). In years with Yin (寅) and Shen (申), Shao Yang Ministerial Fire (Shao Yang Xiang Huo) holds its position. In years with Mao (卯) and You (酉), Yangming belongs to Dry Metal (Zao Jin). In years with Si (巳) and Hai (亥), Jueyin Wind-Wood (Jueyin Feng Mu) is in charge. In years with Chen (辰) and Xu (Xu), Taiyang Cold-Water (Taiyang Han Shui) invades. The Six Qi of Heaven and Earth are natural constants; they rotate upon the Twelve Earthly Branches and must be sought carefully.
Song on the Annual Five Movements of Cold Damage
At the Solar Term Da Han (Great Cold), Wood Movement begins. Two days after Qing Ming (Clear and Bright), Fire Movement takes the second position. Three days after Mang Zhong (Grain in Ear), Earth Movement is third. Four days after Li Qiu (Start of Autumn), Metal Movement is calculated as fourth. Five positions after Li Dong (Start of Winter) is Water Movement.
Song on the Annual Six Qi of Cold Damage
Da Han marks the beginning of the first Qi, Jueyin Wind-Wood. Chun Fen (Spring Equinox) sees Sovereign Fire in the second Qi. Xiao Man (Grain Full) has Shao Yang in the third Qi. Da Shu (Great Heat) corresponds to Taiyin in the fourth Qi. Qiu Fen (Autumn Equinox) has Yangming as the fifth Qi. Xiao Xue (Minor Snow) completes Taiyang as the sixth Qi without remainder.
Song on the Main Qi of Each Year
The first Qi is dominated by Wood. The second and third Qi are arranged consecutively by Sovereign Fire and Ministerial Fire. The fourth Qi is Earth, often serving as the main Qi. The fifth Qi is Metal (associated with Venus), and the sixth Qi is Water connecting to Heaven.
Song on the Guest Qi of Each Year
Subtracting two positions annually indicates the location of the Guest Qi (Ke Qi). The upper position aligns with actual numbers, and the lower position aligns with directions. The Six Qi within the realm are selected by rotation. The rise and fall of Host Qi (Zhu Qi) and Guest Qi determine weakness or strength.
For example, in the year Gui Chou, subtracting two from the Si Tian (Heavenly Ruler) yields Xin Hai. Jueyin Wind-Wood serves as the initial Guest Qi. Zi represents the second Qi, Chou the third Qi, Yin... [Text cuts off here]
Example for Daily Onset of Disease in Cold Damage
Each day of the year corresponds to the Si Tian. The three preceding positions correspond to Si Di (Earthly Ruler), arranged sequentially. For Yang days, count forward; for Yin days, count backward, adding the person's Ben Ming (Life Branch). Count until reaching the Si Tian position to identify the source of disease. Differentiate before and after at the Si Di position.
For instance, a person born in the year Wu Yin falls ill on a Jia Zi day. The Zi day is Si Tian. Moving forward three Earthly Branches leads to Mao, which is Si Di. Since Mao is an Yin branch, retreat one position to Yin and count the Ben Ming. Proceeding forward from Yin to the Si Tian position reveals Zi. This corresponds to the first syndrome of Shaoyin, Character Type Tian, requiring medicine of Character Type Jia.
For instance, a person born in the year Ding You falls ill on a Xin Hai day. Xin represents Water Movement. Jueyin governs destiny. The Xin Hai day is an Yin day. The fifth palace is Mao, so start counting from Mao... [Text cuts off] Xin... cloud.
For instance, a person born in the year Wu Xu falls ill on a Ren Zi day. This is Shaoyin Si Tian. The Ren Zi day is a Yang day. Count forward three palaces to Yin. Start from Yin using the Ben Ming... Yang Xiang... [Text cuts off] Transmits in four days... is Fire.
For instance, a person born in the year Ji Hai falls ill on a Gui Chou day. This belongs to Taiyin Si Tian. The Gui Chou day is an Yin day. Count forward to the fifth palace, which is Si. Start from Si using the Ben... Xia Di... [Text cuts off]
Another Example Formula
The theory of Yun Qi in Su Wen (Plain Questions) is the foundation. Deduce the Yin and Yang of the current day with care. For Yang, count three; for Yin, count five, proceeding forward sequentially. The application to human life depends on the date. Add the Ten Heavenly Stems to the Ben Ming.
For instance, a person born in the year Geng Zi falls ill on a Jia Yin day. This is Shaoyang Si Tian. The Jia Yin day is a Yang day. Starting from Yin, count forward to the third palace, which is Chen. Take the Ben Ming Geng... Yin character... Geng... [Text cuts off]
Quick Method for Daily Onset of Disease in Cold Damage
For Zi and Wu days, start from Yin and Shen. For Chou and Wei days, they correspond to Si and Hai. Yin, Shen, Chen, and Xu must always be remembered. Si, Hai, Mao, and You are not empty statements. This is the quick method for the Six Qi.
Summary of Onset for Five Movements Afflicting Disease
Jia and Ji transform into Earth, not limited to Wei. Yi and Geng Metal Movement is known in You. Bing and Xin Water Movement starts from Zi. Ding and Ren Wood Movement follows in Mao. Wu and Gui Fire Movement originally resides in Wu. All Five Movements are deduced from their prosperous locations. A person with Chou Ben Ming falling ill on a Zi day: counting forward reveals Wu, where Shaoyin resides. For example, if a person with Chou Ben Ming falls ill on a Jia Zi day, use the Si Tian Song.

Seeking Si Tian and Si Di in Cold Damage
Si Tian and Si Di are separated by three positions. Yin and Yang above and below can generally be deduced. If medical students understand this, the root of annual diseases becomes clear.
For example, in the year Gui Chou, Taiyin Damp Earth is Si Tian. Three positions prior is Taiyang Cold Water, which is Si Di.
Method for Seeking Si Tian, Si Di, and Si Ren in Cold Damage
The Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of the day is named Si Tian. The three positions following Si Tian are Zai Quan (Earthly Spring). Zai Quan is also Si Di. The Left and Right Interstitial Qi are named Si Ren.
Song on Seeking Left and Right Interstitial Qi
The Si Tian and Si Di Qi of the current day are true. Interstitial Qi must be distinguished by left and right. Mark both hands above Wu. Three days prior is Zai Quan. Positions opposite each other are named Left and Right.
Song on Seeking Excess, Deficiency, and Balanced Qi
Zi-Wu and Yin-Shen indicate Excess (Tai Guo). Mao-You and Si-Hai indicate Deficiency (Bu Ji). Chen-Xu and Chou-Wei indicate Balanced Qi (Ping Qi). This is the essence of utilizing Earthly Branches.
Song on the Organs Associated with the Six Qi
Chen and Xu follow Taiyang, corresponding to the Bladder and Small Intestine. Mao and You follow Yangming Metal, found in the Large Intestine and Stomach. Yin and Shen follow Shao Yang Gallbladder, inherently involving the Sanjiao (Triple Burner). Chou and Wei Taiyin... [Text cuts off] Large Intestine... Storehouse. [Text cuts off]
Song on the Organs Associated with Earthly Branches
Zi corresponds to Foot Shaoyin, where Kidney Water flows deep from Yongquan. Wu corresponds to Hand Shaoyin, where Sovereign Fire is affiliated with the Heart. Chou corresponds to Foot Taiyin Spleen, Earth governing the four limbs. Wei corresponds to Hand Taiyin... [Text cuts off]
Song on the Organs Associated with the Twelve Earthly Branches
Zi centrally governs the Gallbladder as the head. Chou generates Liver, Yin flows Lung. Mao is Large Intestine, Chen governs Stomach. Si is Spleen governing, Wu is Heart lineage. Transmitting to Small Intestine occurs at Wei.
Song on the Organs Associated with the Ten Heavenly Stems
Jia Gallbladder, Yi Liver, Bing Small Intestine. Ding Heart, Wu Stomach, Ji Spleen flank. Geng Large Intestine, Xin Lung. Ren Bladder, Gui Kidney Hall.

Upper, Middle, Second, Third, Fourth, etc., decades. The fifth transmission flows to Mao and Yin. Sixth, Hai, Zi, Chou divide into three syndromes. This is the living method of Yin and Yang.
It is also said:
Upper, Middle, Second, Third, Fourth form a group. Shaoyang and Yangming wander in the fifth. Jueyin, Shaoyin, and Taiyin seek the sixth. Cholera and exhaustion complete the seventh cycle.
