Tread on the spine, back, and limbs. As well as the head and neck. If one becomes proficient in treading, then wind-pathogens and seasonal epidemics cannot adhere to the person. This is a subtle and essential Daoist practice, which cannot be fully discussed. Generally, those living at home or traveling should always carry with them one sheng of prepared mugwort (Ai Ye), Beijji Wan (Emergency Preparedness Pill), Bigui Wan (Ghost-Avoiding Pill), Shengji Yao (Flesh-Regenerating Medicine), Gan Shi Yao (Moistening Medicine), Dingzhong Yao (Carbuncle-Swelling Medicine), Mercury (Shuiyin), Rhubarb (Dahuang), Mirabilite (Mangxiao), Licorice Root (Gancao), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang), Cinnamon Twig (Guixin), Sichuan Pepper (Shujiao). If one cannot store more medicines, these must not be lacking. Additionally, carry one or two scrolls of "Baiyi Beijii Fang" (Hundred-One Emergency Prescriptions) and medicines to repel venomous snakes, bees, and scorpions. Whenever a person feels healthy for more than ten days, they must moxa three or five acupoints to vent wind-pathogens. Every day, one must regulate Qi; tonification, sedation, massage, and Daoyin (qigong guidance and pulling) are best. Do not consider health as a permanent state just because one is currently healthy. One must remain vigilant in times of peace, preventing various diseases. Moxibustion methods often require avoiding the "Ren Shen" (Human Deities, acupuncture taboos). Whenever physical strength is accumulated through fine labor, one must undergo a draining/venting procedure once in spring and autumn to avoid contracting seasonal epidemics.
The art of swallowing Qi by immortals is not recorded in ancient prescriptions. Although texts like *Huangting Jing* (Yellow Court Classic), *Neijing Jing* (Inner Landscape Classic), and *Yuhan Yin Zhe* (Hidden Jade Box of Recluses) exist in the world, learners do not grasp their essence. Therefore, methods of swallowing Qi:
Or methods of holding breath.
Chisongzi's Method of Swallowing Qi (from *Shengji Zonglu*)
The preface says: The Way of Heaven is long-lasting, and all things are unequal. Human life is precious, sharing the same Yin and Yang. The Way of Heaven is open and flat; cultivating it leads to no confusion. Why are people so foolish, following each other into disaster? When food runs out, swallow Qi three times a month.
Practicing Qi circulation should be done in secluded places in mountains and forests, near east-flowing springs, in sunny areas. Bathe in orchid soup. Write "Yu Fang" (Jade Chamber) with cinnabar to mark the Dantian, one square inch. Distance... Pillow height...
Method of Abstinence from Grain and Swallowing Qi (from *Shengji Zonglu*)
Reduce food intake by one bite per day during eating days. After ten days, one can abstain from food. After two days, if the abdomen feels empty, take nine good dates and nine pieces of Atractylodes cake (one square inch each) and eat them. Contain dates.
The Classics say: The Dao is Qi. Cherishing Qi leads to attaining the Dao; attaining the Dao leads to longevity. Essence is Spirit. Treasuring Essence leads to clarity of Spirit; clarity of Spirit leads to eternal existence. Practicing Qi... one breath... one cycle... makes people... then refine... nine... limbs.
The Classics say: Practice Qi circulation from the 1st to the 15th day of the lunar month, visualizing Qi exiting from the ten fingertips. From the 16th to the 30th day, visualize Qi exiting from the ten toes. Long... long...
After various Qi practices, if one desires to eat, initially drink rice water porridge, increasing the amount by one day's worth each day, gradually adding more. After ten days, soft rice can be eaten. Avoid causing...
The Classics say: In the initial stages of practicing Qi, harmony and coordination are often lacking, leading to rebellious Qi. Limbs may become cold. However, after practicing for a long time, benefits will naturally arise. Four nines equal three hundred sixty... six zang organs...
When first practicing Qi, first stabilize the body and harmonize the form. If Qi is not regulated and the body is uneasy, stop temporarily. Proceed only when harmonized. When Qi arrives, the form is peaceful; when the form is peaceful, the nose... slowly nourish...
In all Qi practices, do not allow anger, sorrow, or worry in the mind. Anger and sorrow cause Qi chaos; Qi chaos causes rebellion. Only through focused contemplation will righteous Qi arrive. When righteous Qi arrives... then Qi...
The method of practicing Qi involves slightly drawing Qi in through the nose and exhaling through the mouth. This is called "long breathing." Inhaling relies on inhalation. Exhaling has six types: Chui (Blow), Xi (Sigh), Hu (Exhale).
To achieve longevity, one must understand the "San Yi" (Three Ones). The Upper Yi is in the Niwan Palace (brain); the Middle Yi is in the Jianggong (heart); the Lower Yi is in the Dantian (lower abdomen). Cultivators must know this. Night... two... full...
Method of holding breath: Slightly draw Qi in through the nose. Count until full, then exhale slightly. If exhaled slightly, draw Qi in again through the nose and swallow. Repeat this several times. Can prolong... mouth out...
Method of Practicing Five Elements Qi (from *Shengji Zonglu*)
In Spring, on Bing days at Si hour. Swallow Qi 120 times. Direct Qi to the Heart, allowing Heart to overcome Lung, protecting Liver from Lung injury. This is the time to nourish the Liver. Spring has nine...
In Summer, on Wu days at Wei hour. Swallow Qi 120 times. To assist the Spleen, allowing Spleen to overcome Kidney, protecting Heart from Kidney injury. The number is the same as the previous season. Late Summer on Geng days, at Shen hour...
In Autumn, on Ren days at Hai hour. Swallow Qi 120 times. To assist the Kidney, allowing Kidney to overcome Heart, protecting Lung from Heart injury. Autumn has nine Ren days; the practice is the same as above.
In Winter, on Jia days, at Yin hour. Swallow Qi 120 times. To assist the Liver, allowing Liver to overcome Spleen, protecting Kidney from Spleen injury. This is the essential method of Five Elements Qi consumption. Four seasons...
The Classics say: The Dao treasures Essence. Giving it generates others; keeping it generates the self. Generating the self yields gain; generating others yields merit. Thus, Heaven and Earth have Yin and Yang... Yin and Yang... then bone... then becomes... inch becomes... Dantian... one...
Immortal's Twelve-Hour Grain Abstinence and Qi Swallowing Method (from *Shengji Zonglu*)
Starting from midnight, swallow 81 times (9x9). At sunrise, swallow 36 times (6x6). At noon, swallow 81 times. At sunset, swallow 36 times... fifteen... sixteen... breathing... not... strength...
Immortal's Grain Abstinence and Five Elements Qi Swallowing Method (from *Shengji Zonglu*)
East Green Tooth, consume Green Tooth, drink Morning Dew. After chanting, lift tongue to upper teeth, lick lips and tongue, rinse mouth and swallow. Three times.
South Vermilion Cinnabar, consume Vermilion Cinnabar, drink Cinnabar Pool. After chanting, lift tongue to lower teeth, rinse mouth and swallow. Three times.
West Bright Stone, consume Bright Stone, drink Spiritual Fluid. After chanting, grind teeth seven times, rinse mouth and swallow. Three times.
North Primal Nourishment, consume Primal Nourishment, drink Jade Syrup. After chanting, inhale Qi through nose and swallow. Three times.
Central Wu-Ji, gaze at Mount Tai, consume Essence Qi with Sweet Spring. After chanting, close eyes and swallow. Three times. Consuming Five Elements Qi attaches internally to the five Zang organs. Green Tooth... Kidney... Qi, when hungry take... moon length...
Method of Serving Six Wus (from *Shengji Zonglu*)
Rise early at dawn, adjust clothes and cap. First connect to Jiazi Empty Wu Chen. Face directly towards Chen position. Strike jade Ying (teeth) with gold beam. Wash Hua Chi (mouth), rinse Li Quan (saliva), absorb Ling Ye (spiritual fluid). Close... and swallow thirty times its essence. This is the method of serving Three-Five. It must be done morning and evening. If hungry, at noon offer to Nine Palaces. The method of offering to Nine Palaces: strike jade Ying with gold beam, swallow every three-five times and stop. Down to the end of Six Wus, all follow the method of drawing Qi using Three-Five-Seven-Nine.
Those who retreat from the world into mountains wishing to abstain from grain and food (from *Shengji Zonglu*)
First know how to draw Qi of Three-Five-Seven-Nine. Also know Six Jia and Six Ding. Otherwise, merely cultivate oneself as a layperson, consuming Qi of Three-Five-Seven-Nine. With mouth one... spit death... ninety-nine... one spit... death Qi... person... nine-eight... method... intention obtained... Qi not... all practices... ensure... Qi rebellion... sallow complexion... heavy difficulty in walking. Forty days later, complexion becomes pleasant, mind and will are peaceful. Fifty days later, five Zang organs are harmonized, essence and Qi nourished internally. Sixty days later, body returns to normal, joints adjusted well. Seventy days later, heart dislikes noise, aspirations soar high. Eighty days later, tranquil and silent, believing clearly in techniques. Ninety days later, lustrous and moist, voice resonant. One hundred days later, righteous Qi arrives, efficacy increases daily. Cultivating without ceasing extends lifespan. After three years, scars and moxa marks disappear, complexion shines. After six years, marrow fills bones strong, foreseeing life and death. After nine years, commanding spirits and ghosts, jade maidens attend beside, brain solid, ribs thickened, irreparable injury impossible. Called True Person, assisting Supreme Sovereign, living as long as Heaven, shining equally with sun and moon. Transmitting to unworthy persons brings disaster upon themselves. Transmit only if worthy; if not worthy, stop. Failing to transmit when worthy obstructs the Heavenly Way. Transmitting when unworthy leaks Heavenly Treasure. Obstructing the Way and leaking Treasure results in not living out one's natural lifespan.
Immortal's Method of Swallowing Qi (from *Shengji Zonglu*)
Visualize the mind as an infant in the mother's womb, perfected in ten months, sinews and bones soft and flexible. Harmonize mind, breath, and thought. When Qi arrives, breathe according to method, swallow, and feel no hunger. Hundred hair pores open...
Method of Taking Yang Times (from *Shengji Zonglu*)
At midnight, swallow 81 times (9x9). At dawn Yin hour, swallow 64 times (8x8). At food time Chen hour, swallow 49 times (7x7). At noon, swallow 36 times (6x6). At afternoon tea time... for... external... corpse...
True Persons have inherently quiet and leisurely natures, words conform to Dao, thoughts and actions flawless. Rinse and swallow spiritual saliva. Consuming it satisfies all flavors. Unblocks Sanjiao, regulates righteous Qi, Qi circulates universally... this is named... essence...
Entering Qi is Yin, exiting Qi is Yang. These two are consuming the essence of Sun and Moon. External and internal naturally quiet; quietness leads to settled Spirit; settled Spirit leads to harmonious Qi... corresponds upward... pulse... immortal...
Truthful Six Qi Mantra (from *Shengji Zonglu*)
Xu belongs to Liver, He belongs to Heart, Si belongs to Lung, Chui belongs to Kidney, Hu belongs to Spleen, Xi belongs to Sanjiao. Each of the Six Qi has its specific regulation. Diseases of the five Zang organs all belong to... righteous Qi... caution lies in...
Generally, when swallowing Qi, sit quietly and steadily, close eyes in silence, clench teeth, close mouth,鼓令气满口即咽鼓 air until mouth is full, then swallow. Up to 91 breaths. In spring and summer, consume cold Qi... autumn... honey...
Method of Swallowing Qi (from *Shengji Zonglu*)
When desiring to swallow Qi, lie straight with feet extended. First clench teeth 36 times, expel turbid and evil Qi. Then roll belly up and down seven times, left and right similarly, seven times each... rest... ten rests... Yin Qi...
When expelling turbid Qi, if during Yang times, slightly draw external Qi in through nose for long extraction. Lower Dantian, hold full after eating extremely, slightly exhale from mouth. Follow according to... fog and thunder...
Generally, when swallowing Qi, Daoyin is best as a precursor. If one can swallow 30-50 swallows of saliva daily, it surpasses taking various medicines.
Generally, moving Qi is like water leaking from a roof, connected and continuous, sent to the diseased area. If suffering from epidemic miasma, simply drawing external Qi and exhaling "He" brings immediate effect.
Generally, when swallowing Qi, drink one or two liang of warm water; water is the mother of Qi. Also, before each meal, drink a little warm water. Over time, one resists cold and heat; drinking more is acceptable.
Generally, those practicing Dao should cleanse and rinse, not dwell on emotions, reduce flavors, avoid exhausting form and spirit, shouting loudly, anger, joy, pleasure, sorrow, grief... touch...
When first swallowing Qi, the mind must be calm and open, without doubt or fear, otherwise Qi is difficult to move. If four limbs are harmonious, mind naturally rejoices, desiring nothing else... entering life...
Generally, when swallowing Qi, do not lose the proper timing. Dantian should always be full. Even amidst worldly affairs, it should not be abandoned. After practicing for a long time, even missing one moment is unnoticed. If one has mastered swallowing Qi, even not practicing all day, Qi is sufficient. It is wondrous and inexhaustible. Swallowing Qi requires the Dantian below the navel to be constantly full. Even while shouting, reading, or speaking all day, Qi power does not decline. Walking in and out for a short time, cold Qi descending is excellent.
If one has mastered swallowing Qi and desires to eat, eating is also acceptable and does not obstruct Qi. Qi still produces sound, reaching down to the navel. Once established, combining eating with Qi practice encounters no obstruction...
Generally, when swallowing Qi, desire that all things in the body do not eat. Once impurities in the intestines are cleared, Qi moves easily. Enduring long periods, one feels spiritual difference, four limbs daily... can separate... combined eating... illness...
Generally, when swallowing Qi, if face swells, it is due to drinking light water rising upward, blocking Qi flow. Hence this occurs. Diet especially avoids Coriander (Husui), Rapeseed (Yuntai), Mugwort-like herbs (Xiehao), Leeks (Jiu), Shallots (Xie), Spinach (Bo), Water Chestnut (Ling), Scallions... All these are essences of wood, damaging Spleen and confusing Qi, greatly inadvisable to eat. Anger damages Soul, sudden grief startles Po. Weeping is something True Persons do not do... must... middle...
Long intestines make Qi easy to consolidate; short intestines make it difficult. If intestines churn and make sounds, lie on right side, support head with right hand, pull legs with left hand... intestine curled... four Kan... drain out...
Method of Regulating Qi
Peng Zu said: Dao is not complicated. Just do not think about food and clothing, sounds and colors, victory and defeat, right and wrong, gain and loss, honor and disgrace... person... block... summer heat... dawn... down... one... direction... take... yang... press... and stop... enter down... all receive... reach... two... strong...
If breath follows reason, hundred diseases do not arise. If regulation is improper, various ailments arise. Those good at nurturing must know the method of regulating Qi. The method of regulating Qi treats major illnesses of ten thousand diseases. Within 100 days, eyebrows and beard grow; others are not worth mentioning.
Generally, the method of regulating Qi: After midnight, before sunrise, Qi is born and can be regulated. After noon, before midnight, Qi is dead and cannot be regulated. When regulating Qi, then look up... five cun... exhaust... can reach... regardless... exit... eighty... left and right...
There are four types of diseases: one, cold swelling; two, Qi disorders; three, pathogenic Qi; four, heat toxins. If there are patients, calmly regulate Qi. This method has no failure to cure. Generally... of... blow... beautiful... joy... spleen... or... and... middle... should make... patient... has disease
