Bian Que said: The Yellow Emperor discussed that in a full day and night, the clepsydra (water clock) drips one hundred ke (periods). For each ke, a person breathes 135 times. Ten ke amount to 1,350 breaths. One hundred ke amount to 13,500 breaths. (Note: The original text here has omissions and disordered segments; translated according to context.)
You gentlemen who enjoy cultivating your nature, be of one mind with me.
What is called "cultivating nature" (Yangxing) is desiring habits to form one's innate character, so that the character naturally tends toward goodness. If not practiced, nothing will not be beneficial (or: if not cultivated, nothing will go amiss - *context implies necessity of cultivation for good*). Since the character is naturally good, internal and external diseases will naturally not arise.
(Original text has omissions, implying) extending longevity. Therefore, Laozi said: Those who are good at preserving life do not encounter tigers or rhinos when walking on land. This is the protection of Dao and De (Virtue). Why rely on taking elixirs to pray for a long life?
The reason people prepare medicinal pastes and pills is to save those who have acted improperly. Thus, foolish people cling to their illnesses, experiencing them throughout life without correcting any behavior, entangled until death, never repenting.
The reason for this is that figures like Qi (Qibo) and He (possibly referring to Heshang Gong or immortals) have long passed away, and Peng Zu and Fu have forever returned. This indeed has its reasons.
Examining health preservation, there are five difficulties: Not abandoning fame and profit is the first difficulty. Not eliminating joy and anger is the second difficulty. Not abandoning sounds and colors (sensory pleasures) is the third difficulty. Not cutting off rich flavors is the fourth difficulty. Scattering spirit and essence through worry and thought is the fifth difficulty. If these five exist, although one hopes for longevity in the heart and chants supreme words with the mouth, chews essences, and breathes solar energy, one cannot reverse destiny or avoid premature death. If these five do not exist in the chest, then righteousness increases daily, and morality becomes complete. One does not need to pray for goodness to have blessings, nor seek longevity for it to extend itself. This is the main purport of health preservation. However, some who embrace benevolence and righteousness and have no desires are also considered secondary.
The Yellow Emperor asked Qibo: I have heard that people in ancient times lived to over a hundred years old, yet their movements were not weak. People nowadays reach half a century, yet their movements decline.
(Note: Original text has omissions, likely describing how modern people's lifestyles lead to physical decline compared to the ancients' light and strong bodies which remain robust in old age.)
The body becomes light and strong; in old age, one appears vigorous; in youth, one is more regulated. Thus, sages engage in non-action (Wuwei), find joy in bland tastes, can follow desires to satisfy the will, and maintain emptiness and void. Therefore, their lifespan is infinite, ending only with heaven and earth. This is how sages govern their bodies.
The three months of spring are called "Fa Chen" (Sprouting and Renewal). Heaven and earth generate together, and all things flourish. Sleep late, rise early, walk broadly in the courtyard, let down hair, walk slowly, to allow the will to grow.
The three months of summer are called "Fan Xiu" (Lush and Beautiful). Heaven and earth energies intersect, and all things flower and bear fruit. Sleep late, rise early, do not tire of the sun, keep the will free from anger, allow the brilliance to become beautiful.
The three months of autumn are called "Rong Ping" (Container and Level). Heaven's air becomes urgent, earth's air becomes clear. Sleep early, rise early, rise with the chickens, keep the will peaceful to缓 (slow down/mitigate) the punishment of autumn.
The three months of winter are called "Bi Cang" (Closing and Storing). Water freezes, earth cracks, do not disturb Yang. Sleep early, rise late, wait for sunlight. Let the will be as if hidden or concealed, as if having private intentions.
Heaven has four seasons and Five Elements, used for growth, transformation, and storage. The Five Elements control five positions to generate cold, heat, dryness, dampness, and wind. Humans have five Zang organs, which transform into five Qi, generating emotions... (Original text has omissions, typically Joy, Anger, Worry, Thought, Fear).
Zhongchang Tong said: In the palaces of kings and nobles, there are thousands of beauties; in the homes of ministers, there are hundreds of attendants. By day, they drench their marrow with fine wine; by night, they indulge in sexual intercourse... (Original text has omissions, implying excessive consumption of Jing/Essence).
Baopuzi said: Someone asked, is what harms the body solely lust? The answer was: Is it only this? However, the key to longevity lies in the bedroom arts.
(Note: Original text has significant omissions and garbled characters, generally meaning worldly people do not know moderation, leading to emaciation and accumulated injury.)
Do not bathe frequently, do not have overly broad ambitions, do not seek strange ingenuity. Do not be extremely warm in winter, do not be extremely cool in summer. Do not sleep under stars and moon, do not use a fan while sleeping. Do not expose yourself to extreme cold, heat, wind, or fog. Do not favor any of the Five Flavors; too much sour hurts the Spleen, too much bitter hurts the Lungs, too much pungent hurts the Liver, too much salty hurts the Heart, too much sweet hurts the Kidneys. This is the Five Flavors controlling the Five Zang organs, the natural logic of the Five Elements. Whatever causes harm can be felt immediately. It is said that long-term harm damages longevity. Thus, those good at preserving life adjust sleep and wake times according to the four seasons, and have a standard of harmony in daily activities. To regulate muscles and bones, there are methods of lying supine and prone; to dispel disease and evil, there are techniques of Tu Na (exhaling and inhaling); to circulate Ying and Wei Qi, there are methods of tonification and sedation; to regulate labor and rest, there are principles of giving and taking. Endure anger to preserve Yin, suppress joy to nourish Yang. Then first take herbal medicines to remedy deficiencies, then take Golden Dan (Elixirs) to stabilize infinity. The principles of cultivating nature end here. Those who wish to act on impulse and feel free, believing themselves to understand fate and not sticking to heterodox views, exhausting their strength without endurance, hearing these words would be like wind passing ears or lightning passing eyes, insufficient to convey the meaning. Even if their bodies wither in indulgence and Qi cuts off in silk and satin, they would gladly accept it. How could one tell them about cultivating nature? They not only do not believe but think it is a great error. To expect them to believe is like using a bright mirror to confuse the blind or music to entertain the deaf.
Emperor Wu of Wei wrote to Huangfu Long: I hear you are over a hundred years old, yet your physical strength has not declined, your ears and eyes are sharp, and your complexion is harmonious. This is a great event. What foods do you take, and what Daoyin (guiding and pulling) exercises do you perform? Please share them secretly within the seal. Huangfu Long submitted a memorial answering: I hear that among the natures of heaven and earth, humans are most precious. Among what humans value, life is most precious. Since the time of Tang Yao, it is boundless; kalpas are endless. Human life in between is sudden like lightning. Every time I think of this, my heart burns with confusion. Life does not come again, death cannot be追回 (retrieved). Why not restrain passions and cultivate nature to protect oneself? Cherishing the current peace of the four seas... (Original text has omissions).
Ji Kang said: In abundant years, there are many illnesses; in famine years, there are few. Truly not false. Thus, the customs of Guanzhong land favor frugality. Kitchen meals rarely have delicacies, only pickles and sauces... (Original text has omissions, implying simple diet).
Baopuzi said: A human body is like a state. The chest and abdomen are like palace rooms. The limbs are like border regions. The distribution of bone joints... (Original text has omissions, mapping body to state structure).
Zhenren (True Person) said: Although one often takes elixirs, not knowing the art of cultivating nature makes it difficult to achieve longevity. The way of cultivating nature is to constantly desire slight labor, but not extreme fatigue.
(Note: Original text has omissions regarding regular sleep and wake cycles.)
Too many desires exhaust spirit; too many thoughts scatter will; too many desires confuse mind; too many affairs weary form; too much speech depletes Qi; too much laughter injures viscera; too much sorrow frightens heart; too much joy overflows intent; too much happiness causes forgetfulness and confusion; too much anger leaves meridians deficient; too much fondness leads to obsession and lack of order; too much aversion leads to emaciation and lack of joy. If these twelve "manys" are not removed, Ying and Wei lose regulation, Blood and Qi move recklessly, which is the root of losing life. Only those who have neither too much nor too little are close to the Dao. Thus, knowing not to engage with external conditions is the method of Zhenren learning the Dao initially. If one can do this, one can live in plague areas without worry. Having screened out external conditions, one must guard the Five Spirits. Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung, Kidney correspond to the four cardinal directions. Among speech, action, sitting, and standing, the most forbidden are floating thoughts,妄念 (delusional thoughts), thinking of desires, and rising evils. Thus Confucius said: Let thoughts be without evil. One should practice the Yellow Emperor's Neishi (Inner Vision) method, visualizing and thinking, seeing the five Zang organs clearly like hanging chimes, with five colors distinct. Do not stop. Also, every morning upon rising, face the Wu (South) direction, hands on knees, observe Qi with the mind's eye, entering from the top and reaching Yongquan (KI1). Do this daily, named "Welcoming Qi". Use nose to inhale, mouth to exhale, exhale slightly, do not open mouth wide. Let exhaled Qi be less, inhaled Qi be more. Whenever wanting to eat, send Qi into the abdomen; whenever wanting to eat, Qi is the master. For anything one loves, do not love deeply; for anything one hates, do not hate deeply. Both damage nature and spirit. Do not praise deeply, do not condemn deeply. Constantly make the mind treat all things equally. If feeling biased, correct it immediately. In poverty, do not say it is always poverty; in wealth, do not say it is always wealth. In both poverty and wealth, must uphold Dao, do not change ambition, character, or insight due to financial status. Understand principles, appearing unable to speak. With great virtue and merit, do not boast. Keep good medicine handy, keep good words on lips, do not let chaotic thoughts pass through the mind. Always with deep heart and sincerity, be respectful to others. Be good all life, do not hold grudges if disliked. Serve the ruler with propriety, even if others think it flattery, adhere to... (Original text has omissions, meaning stick to principle). His virtue is not alone, do not complain that doing good brings no reward. Do not let the mind feel lacking in residence. If... (Original text has omissions, meaning contentment). People who know stopping and sufficiency receive heaven's禄 (salary/blessings). Wherever you go, do not seek too much. Seeking too much enslaves the mind. Illness arises from inability to cultivate nature. On days of peace and health, treating them as normal, indulging desires, wanting whatever the heart desires... (Original text has omissions, implying greed). Deceiving the dark and light, doing everything, claiming it suits nature, not knowing afterwards that each becomes the root of disease. When temples turn yellow, unable to operate, it is all due to past carelessness and inability to self-examine, reaching this point. If only for a short time... (Original text has omissions, meaning reflect). All fear various diseases. Like the 404 diseases, created by hand and foot, not by heaven. Once illness strikes, medicine is ineffective, immortals are powerless. Thus wise people, valuing life and nature, often reflect deeply on this matter. Regarding residence, do not be luxurious and gorgeous, causing greedy and delusional insatiability, which is the source of disaster. Just be elegant, plain, clean, and hygienic, free from wind, rain, heat, and dampness. Clothes and tools, do not use precious jade and gold, which increase faults and cause annoyance and hatred.
(Note: Original text has omissions regarding kitchen/diet.)
Also say: Do not talk while eating. Those who talk while eating often suffer chest and back pain. Do not talk and laugh much while lying down. While lying, do not speak; the five Zang are like bells, if not suspended, they cannot sound. Do not talk while walking. If you must speak, stop your feet, then speak. Talking while walking causes loss of Qi. On Winter Solstice, only Yu (reply) is allowed, not Yan (self-speech). Self-speech is Yan; replying to others is Yu. If someone asks, one must answer, but one should not initiate speech. It is best not to speak loudly when cold. Since speech is cautious, diet must be regulated. Thus, those good at cultivating nature eat when hungry, drink when thirsty. Eat frequently but in small amounts, not in large single meals, as that is hard to digest. Aim to feel like "full but hungry, hungry but full." Generally, being full hurts the Lungs, hunger hurts Qi, salt hurts tendons, sour hurts bones. Thus learn to eat bland food, chew food hot, let rice fat enter the abdomen, do not let wine fat enter. When eating, remove worries. When eating the five flavors, do not binge or stuff oneself excessively, causing spirit alarm and flying dreams. Do not eat heavy meats at every meal; liking it generates hundred diseases. Often eat less meat, more rice, and some pickled vegetables. Do not eat raw herbs, raw rice, adzuki beans, or stale/smelly things. Do not drink turbid wine. Eating wheat flour blocks Qi. Do not eat raw meat, hurting the stomach. All meat must be boiled thoroughly and eaten cold. After eating, rinse mouth several times to prevent tooth decay and keep breath fragrant. After hot food, rinsing with cold vinegar water causes bad breath and dental disease. After hot and salty food, do not drink vinegar water, or one may lose voice or develop "corpse throat." After hot food with sweat, do not face wind, or one gets spasms, headache, dry eyes, and sleepiness. After eating, rub face and abdomen with hands to promote fluid flow.
