Those who die suddenly do so because they encounter "thieving wind" (pathogenic wind) while in a state of "Three Deficiencies". The so-called "Three Deficiencies" are: first, encountering the declining qi of the year; second, encountering the time of the waning moon; third, suffering from sudden changes contrary to the seasonal climate.
Wushen Fhun Dan (Five-Spirits Reviving Pill) (from *Shenghui Fang*), treats sudden death. It is applicable if there is still faint breath and the heart region remains slightly warm.
Herbs: Cinnabar (Banliang), Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang), Benzoin (Anxixiang), Arsenic Trioxide (Pishuang), Large Spider (Wu zhi, collected on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, dried in a bag in a ventilated place).
Usage: Grind the above herbs into fine powder, mix with Bamboo Sap (Zhuli), and administer orally.
Treats cases where men, women, or children suddenly collapse and appear dead while walking or sitting.
Method: Have people strike bronze gongs and drums and shout loudly. After a short time, the deceased will naturally open their mouth and eyes. At this point, pour hot water into the mouth; the person will recognize others and smile, ensuring a safe recovery.
Nanyue Zixu Wei Yuanjun Qisi Huisheng San (South Mountain Purple Void Lady Wei's Reviving Powder) (from *Shenghui Fang*). All cases of sudden death are due to a temporary blockage of qi flow, not necessarily due to prolonged illness and exhaustion of life.
Method: Use only Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparatum (Banxia) without processing, grind into fine powder. Using a bamboo tube, reed tube, or goose feather quill, blow the powder into both nostrils. If death has occurred for less than half a day and the heart remains warm, revival is usually possible.
