Cough in women arises from the deficiency of the body's constitution and external contraction of cold, heat, wind, and dampness pathogens. The Lung is the canopy of the five zang organs, internally governing the qi of all zang organs, and externally connecting with the skin and hair. Due to aversion to cold and dislike of heat, pathogens easily invade and are difficult to treat, because decoctions and powders pass directly through the throat, and acupuncture cannot reach the affected area.
The ten types of cough are: Lung cough, Heart cough, Spleen cough, Kidney cough, Liver cough, Wind cough, Cold cough, Heat cough, Branch-fluid cough (Zhiyin cough), and Gallbladder/Jueyin cough.
Hua Tuo mentioned five types of so: Cold so, Qi so, Drink so, Labor so, and Evil so.
Sun Simiao (Zhenren) also had prescriptions for treating Han Du Wo So (Cold Toxin Wo So). Historical medical texts record this in great detail. However, the "Labor So" known today was not seen in ancient texts. I believe that Hua Tuo's "Evil So" and Sun Zhenren's "Wo So" are roughly similar in pathology. This disease is likely caused by excess in wine and sexual activity, extreme fatigue damaging the Lung, and depleting the meridians and collaterals. In severe cases, patients expectorate pus and blood; in mild cases, it comes and goes. Additionally, some contract it due to weakness and exposure to evil pathogens, transmitted through contact. Some vomit first then cough, or cough first and gradually become emaciated. This is not only internal damage to the Lung meridian but also involves evil transmissive pathogens, making the condition particularly severe. No disease is more toxic or harmful than this.
Sun Zhenren's Tongqi Wan for treating Wo So uses four segments of Centipede. There are also cases involving dreams of intercourse with ghosts and dietary issues, treated entirely with Centipede. The Siman Wan in *Waitai Miyao* treats the five so and also uses Centipede. Wise people who can deduce the intent behind these prescriptions generally use drugs like Gecko (Gejie), Tianlinggai (Human Skull), Peach and Willow branches, Musk (Shexiang), Realgar (Xionghuang), and Benzoin (Anshixiang)—drugs that communicate with the divine—to treat it. This deeply understands the ancients' intent. Furthermore, if there are worms in the Lung, resembling silkworms, causing throat itching and coughing, decoctions and powders passing through are ineffective, and acupuncture cannot reach them. One should aim to dissolve the worms; once the worms die, the cough stops.
Cough occurs when wind pathogens enter from the skin and hair, penetrate the interstices (Couli), and cold affects the Lung meridian. Therefore, coughing ensues. It should be primarily treated with Runfei Tang San. For those who vomit while coughing... [Text fragment] ...Jiadai Ren... Zhi... Fang...
