夫诸气皆属于肺。肺气和平。则升降自若。若为寒邪所伤。则肺气壅涩。不得宣通。故
咳嗽而上气。其证喘咳多涕唾。甚者面目浮肿。久而不已。肺气虚极。风邪停滞。令人胸背
痛。以至唾脓血也。咳嗽上气者。为肺气有余也。肺感于寒。微者则成咳嗽也。肺主气。气
有余则喘上气。此为邪搏于气。气壅涩不得宣发。是为有余。故咳嗽而上气也。久咳嗽上气
者。肺气虚极。风邪停滞。故其病积月累年。久不得瘥。则胸痛面肿。而上气唾脓血也。

Cough and Qi Reversal (Supplementary Discussion)
All qi disorders belong to the Lung. When Lung Qi is harmonious, ascending and descending occur naturally and smoothly. If injured by cold pathogenic factors, Lung Qi becomes obstructed and stagnant, unable to diffuse and unblock, thus causing cough and qi reversal (rebellious Qi). The manifestations include panting cough with excessive phlegm and saliva; in severe cases, facial and ocular edema appear. If prolonged and untreated, extreme deficiency of Lung Qi occurs, wind pathogens stagnate, causing chest and back pain, and even expectoration of pus and blood. "Cough and Qi Reversal" indicates excess in Lung Qi. When the Lung is affected by cold, mild cases result only in cough. The Lung governs Qi; excess Qi leads to panting and Qi reversal. This is due to pathogenic factors clashing with Qi, causing Qi obstruction and stagnation preventing diffusion, which constitutes "excess," hence cough and Qi reversal. In cases of chronic cough and Qi reversal, it is extreme deficiency of Lung Qi with stagnation of wind pathogens; thus, the condition persists for months and years without cure, presenting with chest pain, facial swelling, Qi reversal, and expectoration of pus and blood.
Formulas:
Dihuang Decoction: Treats disharmony of Lung organ Qi, Qi reversal, and cough.
Ingredients: Dihuang Juice (1.5 sheng), Ophiopogonis Juice, Zingiberis Juice, Asparagi Juice (each 5 he), Belamcandae Radix (1 liang), Yellow Cow Milk (1 sheng), Honey (2 sheng), Yellow Cow Butter (5 sheng), Astragali Radix (cut and fried), Cinnamomi Ramulus (bark removed), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (2 liang), Schisandrae Fructus, Farfarae Flos, Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (seedlings and soil removed), Fritillariae Bulbus (heart removed, each 2 liang), Armeniacae Semen (skin and tip removed, double-kernel, pounded, 5 pieces), Scutellariae Radix, Poria Cum Radio Ligni (red), Bupleuri Radix (seedlings removed, each 1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Powder the above ingredients. Then place natural juices, butter, milk, and honey into a copper vessel. Boil over alternating mild and strong fire for 100-110 boils, stirring occasionally. Then slowly add the herbal powders, stir until uniform, and boil another 100+ times. Seal the next day, steam in a steamer for the time it takes to cook two meals. Cool, seal tightly with wax paper for over ten days, checking occasionally to prevent damage. After each meal, take one spoonful, lie supine, and swallow slowly to let the medicine moisten the Heart and Lung. Repeat before sleep at night.
Another Formula: Treats Qi reversal cough, accompanied by water retention and phlegm-fluid accumulation.
Ingredients: Lepidii et Descurainiae Semen (fried), Fritillariae Bulbus, Platycodonis Radix, Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum (calcined), Polygala Radix (each 6 fen), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (4 liang), Poria, Euphorbiae Radix, Aurantii Fructus (calcined, each 4 liang), Asteris Radix et Rhizoma, Inulae Flos, Armeniacae Semen (skin and tip removed, roasted), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (each 4 liang), Genkwa Flos (2 fen), Rheii Radix et Rhizoma (1 qian), Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina (1 fen, calcined, skin and seeds removed).
Preparation and Administration: Pound and sieve. Mix with honey to make pills. Take on an empty stomach with water, 5 pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds, twice daily. Gradually increase to 19 pills. Stop when slight diarrhea occurs. Avoid peaches, plums, sparrow meat, amaranth, vinegar products, pork, and stale/rotten foods.
Muxiang Zhike Decoction: Treats cough with shortness of breath.
Ingredients: Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, Aurantii Fructus (pulp removed, bran-fried), Coptidis Rhizoma (fibers removed, each 1 liang), Ephedrae Herba (roots and nodes removed), Fritillariae Bulbus (heart removed), Lilii Bulbus, Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (seedlings and soil removed), Farfarae Flos (stalks removed), Morus Albae Cortex Radicis, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (cracked, skin and navel removed), Halloysit Rubrum, Laminariae Thallus (washed to remove saltiness, baked, each 1.5 liang), Scutellariae Radix (black heart removed, 0.5 liang), Inulae Flos (lightly fried, 3 fen), Armeniacae Semen (soaked in water, skin and tip removed, double-kernel, fried, 10 pieces).

Preparation and Administration: Powder. Mix with refined honey, pound 500-700 times. Make pills size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 30 pills per dose.
Wuweizi Decoction: Treats cough and Qi reversal, aphonia, epigastric oppression, dizziness with phlegm, dark scanty urination.
Ingredients: Schisandrae Fructus (fried), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Morus Albae Cortex Radicis (fried/cut), Ophiopogonis Radix (de-heart/baked), Saposhnikoviae Radix, Ephedrae Herba (roots/nodes removed), Asari Radix et Rhizoma, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (fried/cut), Petasitis Radix, Armeniacae Semen (soaked, skin/tip removed, double-kernel bran-fried), Aurantii Fructus (pulp removed, bran-fried, each 5 qian), Semen Lepidii et Descurainiae (3 qian, paper-interleaved fried).
Preparation and Administration: Powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 sheng water and 3 slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens. Boil to 0.7 portion, strain, take warm after meals and before bed.
Shujiao Pills (from *Qianjin Fang*): Treats cough and Qi reversal, highly effective.
Ingredients: Zanthoxyli Fructus (5 fen), Aconiti Radix, Armeniacae Semen, Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina, Stellariae Radix (1 liang), Asari Radix et Rhizoma, Farfarae Flos, Asteris Radix et Rhizoma, Zingiberis Rhizoma (each 3 fen), Evodiae Fructus, Ephedrae Herba (roots/nodes removed, each 4 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Fine powder. Honey pills size of Sophora japonica seeds. Swallow 2 pills before sleep. For 20-year chronic cough, do not exceed 20 pills.
Ziwan Decoction (from *Shenghui Fang*): Treats chronic cough and Qi reversal, thick sticky sputum, facial puffiness. Suitable for use.
Ingredients: Ejiao (3 liang, crushed until yellow), Belamcandae Radix (3 liang), Asari Radix et Rhizoma, Zingiberis Rhizoma (1 liang, cracked/fried), Bamboo Juice (1 zhan), Genkwa Root (0.5 liang, soil removed), Morus Albae Cortex Radicis (3 liang, cut), Farfarae Flos (2 liang), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (0.5 liang, cracked, skin/navel removed), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (0.5 liang, fried red cut), White Honey (1 zhan).
Preparation and Administration: Powder. First, boil 2 dou water in a silver pot to 1 dou, strain. Add honey and bamboo juice. Simmer slowly to paste consistency.
Another Formula: Treats cough, hypochondriac distension/fullness, excessive saliva, Qi reversal.
Ingredients: Stellariae Radix (or Alum Stone), Aconiti Radix (one version omits), Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (each 1 fen), Asari Radix et Rhizoma, Huanghuan (each 2 fen), Farfarae Flos, Asteris Radix et Rhizoma, Armeniacae Semen (each 3 fen), Evodiae Fructus (4 fen), Zingiberis Rhizoma (5 fen), Zanthoxyli Fructus (5 he).
Preparation and Administration: Powder. Honey pills size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 1 pill, hold on teeth to swallow juice. 6 times daily. Severe cases continue long-term.
Shedian Decoction (from *Qianjin Fang*): Treats cough and Qi reversal.
Ingredients: Raw Belamcandae Radix, Farfarae Flos (each 2 liang), Asteris Radix et Rhizoma, Asari Radix et Rhizoma, Morus Albae Cortex Radicis, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (each 2 liang), White Honey, Bamboo Juice, Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (each 1 sheng, or dry ginger), Malt Sugar (5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: First put Belamcandae Radix into white honey and bamboo juice, boil 5-6 times, remove. Chop the other six items, soak in 1 sheng water overnight. Boil up and down seven times, strain. Combine malt sugar and ginger juice, boil to syrup consistency. Take 10 pills size of sour jujube, three times daily. Severe cases add two doses at night. Increase if needed, stop when effective. *Waitai Miyao* uses Genkwa Root 0.5 liang.
Another Formula: Treats cough and Qi reversal, frequent vomiting of white froth for decades.
Ingredients: Evodiae Fructus, Schisandrae Fructus, Rheii Radix et Rhizoma, Cinnamomi Cortex, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (fried), Asari Radix et Rhizoma, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Asteris Radix et Rhizoma, Farfarae Flos (each 1 liang), Euphorbiae Radix, Bambusae Caulis in Taenia (each 3 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Cut. Boil 1 dou water to 3 sheng, divide into three doses. Also treats Yin Cough effectively. Avoid seaweed, Chinese cabbage, raw scallions.
Baihe Pills (from *Shenghui Fang*): Treats cough and Qi reversal, chest irritability, discomfort. Use lozenge method.
Ingredients: Lilii Bulbus (1 liang), Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (1 liang, washed/de-seeded), Cinnamomi Cortex (0.5 liang), Ophiopogonis Radix (2 liang, de-heart/baked), Brassicae Albae Semen (0.5 liang, lightly fried), Fritillariae Bulbus (2 liang, baked yellow), Schisandrae Fructus, Zingiberis Rhizoma (1 fen, cracked/fried), Armeniacae Semen (1 liang, soaked, skin/tip removed, double-kernel fried yellow), Terminaliae Chebulae Pericarpium (0.5 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (0.5 liang, fried red cut).
Preparation and Administration: Fine powder. Grind with almonds until uniform. Mix with date flesh to form pills half-date size.
Shengdihuang Decoction (from *Shenghui Fang*): Treats cough and Qi reversal, chest diaphragm irritability, difficult sputum.
Ingredients: Raw Rehmanniae Juice (2 sheng), Raw Asparagi Juice (2 sheng), Honey (5 he), Butter (3 he), Zingiberis Juice (2 he), Fritillariae Bulbus (2 liang, baked yellow), Schisandrae Fructus (2 liang), Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (2 liang, de-seeded), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (1 liang, fried red cut), Cornu Cervi Colla (5 liang, crushed/fried yellow), Armeniacae Semen (3 liang, soaked, skin/tip removed, bran-fried).
Preparation and Administration: Powder, grind extremely fine. Add juices, almonds, butter, honey to silver pot. Simmer slowly, stirring constantly until paste. Store in non-leaky container. Take one tea spoonful to swallow saliva anytime.
Huagai Decoction Powder: Treats cough and Qi reversal.
Ingredients: Farfarae Flos (stalks removed), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (baked), Fritillariae Bulbus (de-heart/fried, each 1 liang), Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (de-seeded), Platycodonis Radix (fried, each 3 fen), Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, Semen Lepidii et Descurainiae (lightly fried, each 0.5 liang), Armeniacae Semen (skin/tip removed, double-kernel fried, 2 fen), Podostemonis Radix (0.5 liang), Cicadae Periostracum (1 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 sheng water and little butter. Boil to 0.7 portion, take warm after meals.
Tongqi Pills (from *Qianjin Fang*): Treats chronic Qi reversal cough, foul breath, Qi disturbing heart/eye pain, ear buzzing, wind-toxin seasonal epidemic, poor wound healing, chest blockage, vomiting/nausea with saliva, epigastric hardness, drinking more/eating less, painful urinary difficulty.
Ingredients: Malt Sugar (3 sheng), Zanthoxyli Fructus (2 sheng), Armeniacae Semen (1 sheng), Centipedae (5 segments), Large Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (5 pieces), Zingiberis Rhizoma (4 fen), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma... (Text gap: "slightly add herb powder") ... Pound 1000 times. Add malt sugar to herb powder, mix. Hold one pill size of half-date in mouth, 6-7 times day, 3-4 times night. Stop when chest feels warm. If dreaming of ghosts/food, use full centipede. Indigestion add Armeniacae Semen 5 he. Lower abdominal urgency/lower back pain add Asparagi Radix, Eucommiae Cortex. Wind add Aconiti Radix 3 pieces, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata 1 piece. Do not add after Start of Summer. Fluid retention add Semen Lepidii et Descurainiae 1 liang.
Madouling San: Treats Lung Heat Qi reversal, panting/rebellious cough, hemoptysis.
Ingredients: Aristolochiae Fructus, Scutellariae Radix (black heart removed), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (fried/baked), Poria (black skin removed), Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (de-seeded), Ephedrae Herba (roots/nodes removed), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (fried/cut), Armeniacae Semen (skin/tip removed, kernel fried yellow), Fritillariae Bulbus (de-heart), Rheii Radix et Rhizoma (cut/fried, each 0.5 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Powder. Take 2 qian per dose. Take with decoction of Morus Albae Cortex Radicis and Jujubae Fructus.
Jiajian Sanqi Tang (from *Bacui Fang*): Treats cough and Qi reversal, phlegm/saliva panting, chest/diaphragm discomfort.
Ingredients: Platycodonis Radix (rhizome removed, 0.5 liang), Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum (water-washed 7 times), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (white pith removed, 5 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (5 qian), Citri Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium (white pith removed, 5 qian), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (rhizome removed, 5 qian), Armeniacae Semen (3 qian, pounded), Schisandrae Fructus (4 qian), Perillae Folium, Morus Albae Cortex Radicis (each 5 fen).

Ingredients: Arecae Pericarpium (3 fen, cut), Armeniacae Semen (3 fen, soaked, skin/tip removed, double-kernel bran-fried yellow), Lilii Bulbus (0.5 liang), Semen Lepidii et Descurainiae (2 liang, cotton-paper interleaved fried purple), Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (3 fen, de-seeded), Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum (0.5 liang, water-soaked 7 times to remove slipperiness), Poria Cum Radio Ligni (red) (1 liang), Platycodonis Radix (3 fen, rhizome removed), Morus Albae Cortex Radicis (1 liang, cut), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (0.5 liang, fried red cut).

Ingredients: Fermented Soybean Paste (20 pieces), Edible Evodiae Fruit (one version uses Evodiae Fructus), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Asari Radix et Rhizoma, Armeniacae Semen (skin/tip removed, double-kernel roasted, each 1 liang), Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (2 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Fine powder. Pound almonds separately to paste, mix with powder. Honey pills size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take 3 pills, 3 times daily. Increase to 5 if ineffective. Before sleep, hold 10 pills in throat to swallow. Avoid seaweed, Chinese cabbage, raw vegetables.
Formula for Chronic Cough/Qi Reversal 10-20 Years, Untreated by Other Herbs (from *Zhouhou Fang*):
Remove head of bat, burn to ash/powder, take with water.
Formula for Qi Reversal Cough (from *Bencao*):
Roast wrist bone (Chuai Gu) to powder, mix with 3 he wine, take twice daily. Cough will heal.
