Shao Yang Xiang Huo (Ministerial Fire of San Jiao and Pericardium) governs the heavenly qi, while Jue Yin Feng Mu (Wind Wood of Liver and Pericardium) governs the earthly qi. The central movement is Tai Jiao (Wood movement in excess). The wood qi of the year is excessive, and its qi transformation operates ahead of the natural time.
The qi of heaven and earth: Fire transformation is above, with clear transformation on the left and soft transformation on the right. Thus, the heavenly qi spreads and its administration is strict. Acid transformation is below, with scorching transformation on the left and storing transformation on the right. Cold invades internally, manifesting externally as sores and ulcers, and internally as diarrhea and fullness. The sage, encountering this, harmonizes without contending. When wind qi recurs, the people suffer from alternating cold and heat, malaria, diarrhea, deafness, dim vision, vomiting, etc.
Before the middle of the year, the heavenly qi is governed by Shao Yang. Where Shao Yang arrives, it manifests as hot summer heat; its transformation follows its root. At this time, fire transformation prevails, and wind qi responds accordingly.
After the middle of the year, the earthly qi is governed by Jue Yin. Where Jue Yin arrives, it manifests as the wind mansion; its transformation does not simply follow the root or branch, but transforms according to its intermediate qi (Shao Yang). At this time, wind qi prevails, and treatment should follow the nature of fire transformation.
The First Qi period begins at Shen hour on the day of Great Cold in the Xin Chou year and ends at Wu hour on the day of Spring Equinox in that year, lasting 60 days and 87.5 ke. The main position is Tai Jiao Wood, and the guest qi is Yang Ming Dryness Metal. Wind qi shakes, and the people suffer from headache. The interstitial qi is Fire, clouds gather, and the people suffer from disease.
The Fourth Qi period: The movement qi is peaceful, and the people's disease manifests as heavy body. It is appropriate to treat the guest qi of Yang Ming, using Sour flavor to tonify, Pungent flavor to drain, and Bitter flavor to purge. The grain of the year should be blue/black colored, and the interstitial grain should be yellow millet, so that dryness does not become pathogenic.
The Fifth Qi period begins at Yin hour on the day of Autumn Equinox and ends at Zi hour on the day of Minor Snow, lasting over 60 days. The main position is Shao Shang Metal, the guest qi is Tai Yang Cold Water, with Wood movement seen in the center. Water and Wood harmonize, and are compatible with Metal. During this qi, cold transformation arrives early, yang departs, cold arrives, rain descends, the pores close, rigid wood withers early. People avoid cold pathogens, and gentlemen protect themselves meticulously. It is appropriate to treat the guest qi of Tai Yang, using Bitter flavor to tonify, Salty flavor to drain, Bitter flavor to solidify, and Pungent flavor to moisten. The grain of the year should be blue/black colored, and the interstitial grain should be broomcorn millet, so that cold does not become pathogenic.
The Final Qi period begins at Zi hour on the day of Minor Snow and ends at Xu hour on the day of Great Cold, lasting over 60 days. The main position is Tai Yu Water, the guest qi is Jue Yin Wood, with Wood movement seen in the center. When Tai Jiao adds to Jue Yin, the movement and qi correspond, and their transformation is peaceful. Being in the water position, water and wood are compatible, and their transformation is smooth. Earthly qi is correct, wind arrives, all things regenerate, fog moves. Diseases manifest as inability to control excretion, heart pain, yang qi failing to store leading to cough. At times of balanced qi, there should be no disease. If disease occurs, it is because qi has inherited something and cannot avoid mutual insult. This is called "evil striking the law-enforcer." The classics say: "When evil strikes the law-enforcer, the disease is rapid and dangerous." It is appropriate to treat the guest qi of Jue Yin, using Pungent flavor to tonify, Sour flavor to drain, and Sweet flavor to relax. The grain of the year should be blue/black colored, and the interstitial grain should be rice, so that wind does not become pathogenic. In this qi, the governing qi is warm; use warm remedies without violating prohibitions.
