Diagnosis focuses on the pulse at Chongyang (ST42) of the foot. The treatment principle should be to level with Pungent-Cool, assist with Bitter-Sweet, use Sweet to relax, and use Sour to drain.

In the second half of the year, Shaoyang Minister-Fire presides. If Fire excess occurs internally, flames shine across the suburbs, cold and heat alternate. The people suffer from dysentery with red and white discharge, lower abdominal pain, and difficult urination.

At the four corners (transitions of seasons), if there is a transformation of dust clouds and moisture, then in Spring there will be the policy of rustling branches and breaking twigs. If at the four corners there occur changes of shaking, tearing, and floating turbulence, then in Autumn there will be the retribution of solemn killing and continuous rain. The disaster occurs at the four corners; the affected organ is the Spleen. The disease involves the Heart and abdomen internally, and muscles and limbs externally. Overlapping with Jueyin, the Qi is similar to Zheng Jiao. The people suffer from undigested diarrhea (Sun Xie); this is because the pathogen injures the Spleen. The treatment principle should be to treat with Sweet Harmony.

The First Qi begins from Hai Chu (early Hai hour) on the Great Cold day of the Wuxu year, ending at You Chu (early You hour) on the Spring Equinox day of this year, totaling 60 days and 87.5 ke. The Main Position is Shao Jiao Wood. The Guest Qi begins at You Zheng (mid-You hour) on the Spring Equinox day, ending at Wei Zheng (mid-Wei hour) on the Grain Full day, totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Tai Zheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Taiyang Water, revealing the Earth Movement. Dampness and Cold combine to execute the transformation of soothing and flourishing. If Cold does not depart, flowers bloom early, snow-water freezes, killing energy executes transformation, frost descends, common grasses wither at the upper Jiao, cold rains arrive frequently, Yang Qi recovers transformation, and the people suffer from heat in the Middle Jiao. It is appropriate to treat the Guest Qi of Taiyang: tonify with Bitter, drain with Salty, firm with Bitter, moisten with Pungent. Year grains should be Green; intercalary grains should be Ji (Millet). Restrict the Cold pathogen so it cannot cause harm.

The Third Qi begins at Shen Chu (early Shen hour) on the Grain Full day, ending at Wu Chu (early Wu hour) on the Great Heat day, totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Tai Zheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Jueyin Wood, revealing the Earth Movement. Wood overcomes Earth, Heavenly governance spreads, Wind rises according to time. The people suffer from lacrimation and dizziness. It is appropriate to treat the Guest Qi of Jueyin: tonify with Pungent, drain with Sour, relax with Sweet. Year grains should be Green; intercalary grains should be Rice. Restrict the pathogen so it cannot cause harm.

The Fourth Qi begins at Wu Zheng (mid-Wu hour) on the Great Heat day, ending at Chen Zheng (mid-Chen hour) on the Autumn Equinox day, totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Shao Gong Earth, revealing the Earth Movement. Earth occupies its position, Shaoyin [Minister-Fire] resides therein. Muggy heat arrives, Dampness and Heat contend above on the left. The people suffer from jaundice. Treat the Guest Qi of Shaoyin: tonify with Salty, drain with Sweet, collect with Sour. Year grains should be Red; intercalary grains should be Beans. Restrict the pathogen so it cannot cause harm.

The Fifth Qi begins at Si Chu (early Si hour) on the Autumn Equinox day, ending at Mao Chu (early Mao hour) on the Light Snow day, totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Tai Shang Metal, the Guest Qi is Taiyin Dampness. The Movement and Qi are identical. Dryness and Dampness alternate in dominance, deep Yin spreads, Cold Qi reaches the body, wind and rain occur. It is appropriate to treat the Guest Qi of Taiyin: drain with Bitter, relax with Sweet. Year grains should be Red; intercalary grains should be Sesame. Treat the Dampness pathogen so it cannot cause harm. In this Qi, do not violate the Qi of the Governor.

The Final Qi begins before Chou Zheng (mid-Chou hour) on the Great Cold day, ending at Chou Zheng on the Great Cold day, totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Shao Yu Water, the Guest Qi is Shaoyang [Minister-Fire], revealing the Earth Movement. Fire commands, Yang Qi greatly transforms, hibernating insects appear, flowing water does not freeze, Earth Qi erupts, grasses grow, people feel comfortable. The disease is Warmth. Treat the Guest Qi of Shaoyang: tonify with Salty, drain with Sweet, soften with Salty. Year grains should be Red; intercalary grains should be Beans. Restrict the Fire pathogen so it cannot cause harm.

General Principle: If Wind exceeds, there will be a retribution of Yangming. If Fire exceeds, there will be a retribution of Taiyang. Observe where they arrive, and treat each with its respective method.
