[Chart of Yunqi for the Year of Jiyou]
Yangming Dryness Metal governs the Heaven (Si Tian), Shaoyin Ministerial Fire governs the Earth (Zai Quan), and the Central Movement is Shaogong Earth. The Earth movement is insufficient, causing the Qi transformation to operate later than the celestial timing. Dryness dominates above (Si Tian), while Dampness dominates below (Zai Quan). Wind begins to arise, with Wind and Dryness moving horizontally through the intersection of Qi. There is more Yang and less Yin; clouds gather at the Rain Mansion, allowing Dampness to be disseminated.
Metal represents the Heavenly Qi, and Fire represents the Earthly Qi. Fire can overcome Metal, but the Earth movement intervenes, making the pathogenic factor weak. Since the Heavenly Qi is deficient, it is advisable to nourish the Source of Transformation to assist Metal Qi, while simultaneously pacifying the Earth movement to prevent it from being invaded by pathogens. Consume white grains to stabilize Qi, and consume grains of the inter-qi to eliminate pathogens. Treatment for the year should utilize Salty, Bitter, and Pungent flavors. Methods include inducing sweating (Han Zhi), clearing heat (Qing Zhi), and dispersing (San Zhi). If the movement aligns with Clear Qi, utilizing methods that promote transformation is appropriate; this is the standard treatment.
Before the midpoint of the year, the Heavenly Qi is governed by Yangming. If Dryness overcomes, trees fruit late, and grass grows late. People suffer from pain in the left hypochondrium and internal cold. Sores, carbuncles, and abscesses occur, with the root in the Liver. Diagnosis focuses on the Foot Tai Chong Meridian. Treatment should use Bitter flavor to level, assisted by Sour and Pungent flavors, and use Bitter flavor to purge downward.
After the midpoint of the year, the Earthly Qi is governed by Shaoyin. Heat overflows internally, causing rivers and marshes to boil, and dark places to appear bright. Hibernating insects do not hide. People suffer from constant abdominal rumbling. The transformative Qi diminishes, and the Transforming Qi does not function properly. The Generating Qi stands alone prominent. The Longing Qi is orderly, rain is delayed, and the Receiving Qi is peaceful. Wind and Cold rise together, causing trees to wither and green grains to be damaged. Sudden chest and hypochondriac pain radiates to the lower abdomen. Sweet flavor should be used to harmonize the Middle Jiao.
First Qi Period: From the beginning of Si hour on Da Han day of the Wushen year to the beginning of Mao hour on Chun Fen day of the current year, lasting 60 days and 87.5 ke. The Primary Position is Shaojiao Wood, the Guest Qi is Taiyang Water, with Earth movement in between. Pathologies include middle-jiao heat distension, facial and ocular edema, somnolence, rhinorrhea, sneezing, yawning, vomiting, yellow-red urine, and severe cases of strangury. Treat the Taiyang Guest Qi with Sweet flavor to tonify, Bitter flavor to drain, and Sweet flavor to relax. Year grains should be white; inter-grains should be hemp seeds. Although Dampness pathogen exists, it cannot cause harm. The governing Qi is Cool; use Cool methods without violating them.
Second Qi Period: From Mao hour on Chun Fen day to Chou hour on Xiao Man day, lasting over 60 days. The Primary Position is Taizheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Shaoyang Ministerial Fire, with Earth movement in between. The two Fires govern together, Yang Qi spreads, people feel comfortable, and all things grow luxuriant. Epidemics arrive greatly, and people may die suddenly. Treat the Shaoyang Guest Qi with Salty flavor to tonify, Sweet flavor to drain, and Salty flavor to soften hardness. Year grains should be white; inter-grains should be beans. Although Fire pathogen exists, it cannot cause harm.
Third Qi Period: From Yin hour on Xiao Man day to Zi hour on Da Shu day, lasting over 60 days. The Primary Position is Taizheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Yangming Metal, with Earth movement in between. Fire, Earth, and Metal generate each other. Heavenly administration spreads, Cool Qi acts, Dryness and Heat intersect, and extreme Dryness produces Moisture. People suffer from alternating chills and fever. Treat the Yangming Guest Qi with Sour flavor to tonify, Pungent flavor to drain, and Bitter flavor to vent. Year grains should be white; inter-grains should be broomcorn millet. Although Dryness pathogen exists, it cannot cause harm.
Fourth Qi Period: From Zi hour on Da Shu day to Xu hour on Qiu Fen day, lasting over 60 days. The Primary Position is Shaogong Earth, the Guest Qi is Taiyang Water, with Earth movement in between. The Earth movement takes its proper position, and Taiyang resides there. Cold rain descends. Diseases present as sudden collapse, tremors, delirium, shortness of breath, dry throat with desire to drink, heart pain, carbuncles, sores, malaria with chills, bone emaciation, and bloody stools. Treat the Taiyang Guest Qi with Bitter flavor to tonify, Salty flavor to drain, Bitter flavor to firm, and Pungent flavor to moisten. Year grains should be red; inter-grains should be foxtail millet. Although Cold pathogen exists, it cannot cause harm.
Fifth Qi Period: From Hai hour on Qiu Fen day to You hour on Xiao Xue day, lasting over 60 days. The Primary Position is Taisang Metal, the Guest Qi is Jueyin Wood, with Earth movement in between. The Guest Qi overcomes the Movement, spring regulations reverse, grass and trees flourish, and people's Qi is harmonious. Treat the Jueyin Guest Qi with Sour flavor to drain, and Sweet flavor to relax. Year grains should be red; inter-grains should be rice. Although Wind pathogen exists, it cannot cause harm.
Final Qi Period: From You hour on Xiao Xue day to Wei hour on Da Han day, lasting over 60 days. The Primary Position is Shaoyu Water, the Guest Qi is Shaoyin Fire, with Earth movement in between. The climate reverses to warmth, hibernating insects appear, flowing water does not freeze, and people are healthy and peaceful. The disease is Warmth. Treat the Shaoyin Guest Qi with Salty flavor to tonify, and Sour flavor to astringe. Year grains should be red; inter-grains should be beans. Although Heat pathogen exists, it cannot cause harm. This is the normal pattern of the Six Qi. If there is a recurrence of Shaoyang, or if Earthly Qi overcomes, there will be a recurrence of Taiyang; treat each according to their overcoming and recurrence methods.
