When women suffer from abdominal distension and fullness, it is due to long-standing coldness in the zang-fu organs, deficiency and damage of qi and blood, allowing pathogenic factors to invade and lodge in the heart and spleen. This condition primarily involves the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
If there is retained water in the Bladder, and lochia fails to clear after childbirth, these two pathological products mix and flow into the Stomach, causing such distension and oppression. Longxian Tang (Dragon Saliva Decoction) and Jiangqi Tang (Qi-Descending Decoction) are indicated for these conditions.
When women experience distension and fullness in the chest and hypochondrium, it arises from physical exhaustion leading to bodily weakness, allowing wind-cold pathogens to invade and lodge between the zang-fu organs and intestines. The pathogens contend with qi and blood, causing stagnation and obstruction. Qi becomes rebellious when exposed to cold, and its contention with blood leads to upward rushing into the chest and hypochondrium, resulting in distension and fullness.
