There are five types of jaundice: Huanghan (Yellow Sweat), Huangdan (Jaundice), Gu dan (Grain Jaundice), Jiu dan (Wine Jaundice), and Nü lao dan (Female Labor Jaundice). The symptoms of Huanghan include generalized edema, sweating without thirst, yellowish sweat, dizziness, and mental restlessness. This is caused by the stagnation and steaming of heat qi. Yellowing of the body due to wind exposure after sexual intercourse results from damage to blood and qi; it must be clearly distinguished at the time of illness. Although the five types of jaundice differ in presentation, the manifestation of yellowing is consistent, rooted in the same origin, and none arise without the involvement of heat and dampness.
The treatise states: The *Neijing* mentions that yellowing of the eyes is called Huangdan. It also states that lying still with a surging pulse is called Huangdan. The external symptoms of this disease include yellowing of the body, face, nails, and urine. If the complexion is slightly yellow, or if the body shows blue, red, or black hues, it differs from pure heat syndromes and should be treated by addressing dampness. When jaundice originates from Yin aspects, vomiting is inevitable; when it originates from Yang aspects, chills and slight fever occur. Jaundice without thirst is treatable, while jaundice with thirst is difficult to treat. If Huangdan presents with fever, restlessness, panting, chest fullness, and dry mouth, it may result from forced sweating via fire therapy or from damp-heat accumulation in the interior, requiring purgation.
