Yuanhua (Flos Genkwa, soaked in vinegar overnight, stir-fried until yellow), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis, stir-fried), Wuzhuyu (Fructus Evodiae, stir-fried), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, remove white pith, each 1 liang above), Baiqianniu (Semen Pharbitidis, half raw half stir-fried, take the first extraction powder 2 liang), Madouling (Fructus Aristolochiae, 1 liang), Hanshimian (Cold Food Flour, 3 liang). Each dose takes one cake, chew thoroughly, and swallow with Madouling decoction. Take before sleep. If the patient feels chest comfort, add one more cake. By morning, slight diarrhea occurs. Miraculous effect. Pregnant women must not take this.
Pingqi San (Qi-Pacifying Powder, from *Weisheng Baojian*), treats excess-type asthma (Chuan). In the early autumn of the third day of Jiwei year, by imperial decree, I went to Liupan Mountain. By mid-August, continuous rain fell. At that time, by imperial order, I treated Lady Wu, wife of Marshal Bulinji. She was over fifty years old. Her body was obese and robust. Due to excessive alcohol consumption and consumption of Zhongru (Calcitum), she suffered abdominal distension and asthmatic fullness. The sound could be heard outside the house. She could not lie down comfortably. Urination and defecation were obstructed and sluggish. The Qi-kou pulse was large, twice as large as the Ying-kou pulse. The Guan pulse was deep, slow, and forceful. I pondered the dampness of the continuous rain and dietary factors.
For excess patterns, purgation is appropriate. Thus, I formulated Pingqi San.
Baiqianniu (Semen Pharbitidis, 2.5 liang, half raw half stir-fried cooked, take first extraction powder 2 liang), Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride, 3 qian, remove white pith), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 7 qian), Jixinbangling (Nux Arecae, 3 qian).

*Neijing* states: "The Lung suffers from rebellious Qi; urgently consume bitter flavors to drain it." Baiqianniu is bitter and cold. It drains damp-heat attacking upward from the Qi level causing asthma. Therefore, it serves as the Sovereign herb.
Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae)...
Bitter and cold.
The above ingredients are made into powder. Each dose is 3 qian. Mix with a large zhan of Shengjiang decoction. Take at any time. After one dose, symptoms halve. After another dose, asthma resolves. Only chest and diaphragm discomfort remain. Irritation...
Jiajian Xiebai San (Modified Draining White Powder, from *Weisheng Baojian*).
Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis, 1 liang), Digupi (Cortex Lycii Radicis, 5 qian), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, peeled 5 qian), Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride, remove white pith 2 qian), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 3 qian), Xi Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, ...).
Remove 1 zhan.
Remove dregs. Take warm after meals. After several doses, good recovery. Hua Tuo said: "Excess leads to asthma; deficiency leads to withering." *Huoren Shu* says: "Asthma indicates surplus Qi."
When reading texts, one must grasp the original intent. "Excess leading to asthma" does not mean Lung Qi is excess. "Asthma indicating surplus Qi" does not mean Lung Qi itself is surplus. "Qi excess" should be understood as Qi deficiency. "Surplus" should be understood as urgency/acceleration. If Lung Qi were truly excess and surplus, it would descend clearly and smoothly without asthma. Because Fire enters the Lung, deficiency and insufficiency lead to asthma. Thus, saying "excess" does not refer to Lung Qi excess, but to Fire in the Lung being excess. Saying "surplus" does not refer to Lung Qi surplus, but to Fire in the Lung being surplus. Therefore, using bitter-cold agents to drain the Lung does not drain the Fire in the Lung, but actually tonifies Lung Qi. Users must understand this.
Suzi Jiangqi Tang (Perilla Seed Descending Qi Decoction, from *Ruyi Fang*), treats asthma. Asthma and panting caused by deficient Yang attacking upward.
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, processed), Qianhu (Radix Peucedani, each 2 liang), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, processed), Gui (Ramulus Cinnamomi, each 2 liang), Suzi (Semen Perillae), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Ternatae, each 5 liang).
