归其所宗。此治之大体也。
Shao Yin Jun Huo (Ministerial Fire) governs Si Tian (Heavenly Command), and Yang Ming Zao Jin (Dryness Metal) governs Zai Quan (Earthly Command). The central Yun (Movement) is Tai Zheng Huo Yun (Excessive Fire Movement). The year's Fire is excessive, and its Qi transformation operates prior to the natural timing. The excessiveness coincides with the Heavenly transformation, forming a "Tian Fu" (Heavenal Agreement).
The corresponding Zang organ is the Heart. Its external manifestation is the Tongue. It nourishes Blood. Pathological changes manifest as convulsions and spasms. This describes the transformation of the annual Yun. Shao Yin is positioned above (Si Tian); on the left is Tai Yin (Great Yin), and on the right is Jue Yin (Terminal Yin). Thus, the governmental Qi distributed by Heaven is bright. Yang Ming is positioned below (Zai Quan); on the left is Tai Yang (Great Yang), and on the right is Shao Yang (Lesser Yang). Thus, the Earthly Qi is austere, and its command is sharp. Cold intersects with Heat; Heat adds to Dryness. Clouds race in the Rain Mansion, Humidity transformation proceeds, and seasonal rains descend. Metal and Fire combine their virtues, corresponding to Ying Huo (Mars) and Tai Bai (Venus) in the sky. The suitable grains are red and white. The number for Heat transformation is seven, and for Clearing transformation is nine; this is the degree of correct transformation. Feathered creatures remain quiet, shelled creatures breed; these are the适宜 (suitable) characteristics of the year's substances. Hairy creatures diminish, and damp toxins do not arise, because Earthly Qi restrains them. Water, Fire, Cold, and Heat hold sway at the Qi intersection, and diseases begin here. Heat diseases arise from above, Clear/Cold diseases arise from below, and Cold-Heat struggle in the middle. The people suffer from cough and wheezing, hematemesis or hematochezia, nasal congestion and sneezing, red and ulcerated eyes, cold jue invading the stomach, heart pain, lower back pain, abdominal distension, dry and swollen throat extending upwards.
In this year, Fire is above, Metal is below, and Fire is in the middle. Fire overcomes Metal. Heavenly Qi is full, Earthly Qi is deficient. Although Heavenly Qi appears balanced, Heat is severe above. It is advisable to regulate [the condition] before the year begins to prevent disease.
Before the midpoint of the year, Shao Yin governs. Shao Yin has transformations of Ben (Root) and Biao (Branch). When Cold and Heat achieve balance, it represents the peaceful state of Heavenly Government.
After the midpoint of the year, Yang Ming governs. Yang Ming transforms via its Zhong Qi (Central Qi). Dryness and Humidity are equal halves, which is the command of Earth.
The First Qi period starts from Shen Chu (early Shen hour) on Da Han (Major Cold) day of the Ding Si year, until Wu Chu (early Wu hour) on Chun Fen (Spring Equinox) day of this year, totaling 60 days and 87.5 ke. The Main Position is Shao Jiao Wood. The Guest Qi is... [text missing/garbled]. Yang Qi spreads, Wind moves, Spring Qi is upright, and all things flourish in response. Cold Qi arrives at times, and the people harmonize. Diseases include strangury, blepharoptosis, red eyes, and Qi stagnation in the upper body causing heat. It is appropriate to regulate the Guest Qi of Jue Yin: tonify with Pungent (Xin), drain with Sour (Suan), and relax with Sweet (Gan). Annual grains should be red (Dan), and intercalary grains should be rice. Thus, Wind will not become pathogenic.
The Third Qi period starts from Si Chu (early Si hour) on Xiao Man (Grain Full) day, until Mao Chu (early Mao hour) on Da Shu (Great Heat) day, totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Tai Zheng Fire. The Guest Qi is Shao Yin Fire, with Central Fire Yun. The Qi matches the Yun. Heavenly Government spreads, Great Fire moves, and various species flourish brightly. Cold Qi arrives at times. People suffer from Qi jue and heart pain, alternating cold and heat, cough and wheezing, and red eyes. It is appropriate to regulate the Guest Qi of Shao Yin: tonify with Salty (Xian), drain with Sweet (Gan), and astringe with Sour (Suan). Annual grains should be red, and intercalary grains should be beans. Thus, Heat will not become pathogenic.
The Fourth Qi period starts from Mao Zheng (mid-Mao hour) on Da Shu (Great Heat) day, until Chou Zheng (mid-Chou hour) on Qiu Fen (Autumn Equinox) day, totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Shao Gong Earth. The Guest Qi is Tai Yin Earth, with Central Fire Yun. Earth occupies its proper position, accompanied by Fire transformation. Muggy heat arrives, heavy rain occurs frequently, and cold and heat alternate. People suffer from alternating cold and heat, dry mouth, jaundice, nasal congestion and epistaxis, and fluid retention disorders. It is appropriate to regulate the Guest Qi of Tai Yin: tonify with Sweet (Gan), drain with Bitter (Ku), and relax with Sweet (Gan). Annual grains should be white, and intercalary grains should be sesame. Thus, Dampness will not become pathogenic.
The Fifth Qi period starts from Yin Chu (early Yin hour) on Qiu Fen (Autumn Equinox) day, until Zi Chu (early Zi hour) on Xiao Xue (Minor Snow) day, totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Tai Shang Metal. The Guest Qi is Shao Yang Ministerial Fire, with Central Fire Yun. The Qi transforms similarly to the Yun. Fearful Fire descends, summer heat returns, Yang Qi transforms, and all things grow and flourish. The people are healthy. Their disease is warm disease (Wen Bing). It is appropriate to regulate the Guest Qi of Shao Yang: tonify with Salty (Xian), drain with Sweet (Gan), and... [text missing]. Annual grains should be white, and intercalary grains should be beans. Thus, Fire will not become pathogenic. Avoid using hot remedies during hot periods; do not violate the heat of the Si Qi.
The Final Qi period starts from Zi Zheng (mid-Zi hour) on Xiao Xue (Minor Snow) day, until Xu Zheng (mid-Xu hour) on Da Han (Major Cold) day, totaling over 60 days. The Main Position is Shao Yu Water. The Guest Qi is Yang Ming Metal, with Central Fire Yun. Fire overcomes Metal, and Water counter-restrains. Dryness command operates, residual fire is internally blocked, swelling occurs above, cough and wheezing arise, and in severe cases, bleeding occurs. Cold Qi rises frequently, leading to misty obscurity. Diseases arise in the skin and cou li (interstices), internalizing in the hypochondrium, connecting downward to the lower abdomen causing interior cold. Earthly Qi restrains... [text missing]. It is appropriate to regulate the Guest Qi of Yang Ming: tonify with Sour (Suan), drain with Pungent (Xin), and drain with Bitter (Ku). Annual grains should be white, and intercalary grains should be millet. Thus, Dryness will not become pathogenic. This is the transformation of the Six Qi. At the transition of annual Qi, Peaceful Fire is above, and Metal Qi is depressed. Treatment should employ draining methods. Let each Qi be at peace; maintain clarity and stillness, and pathogenic Qi will naturally decline, returning to its source. This is the general principle of treatment.
