The so-called "pea sores" (Dou Pei Chuang, a type of smallpox-like eruption) caused by seasonal pathogens arise when heat-toxic qi attacks the Zang-Fu organs. The residual pathogenic factors flow into the muscles and eventually condense within the skin pores to form these sores.
Their appearance resembles pea grains, hence the name. By administering herbs that resolve heat toxicity, the progression of the sores can be halted. A surging and rapid pulse (Hong Shu Mai) is the characteristic sign.
Prescriptions
Xi Jiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) [Source: *Sheng Hui Fang*]: Treats pea sores caused by seasonal pathogens, characterized by pain after ulceration and mental restlessness.
Rhino Horn in Chips (Wu Qian), Clove (Ban Liang), Frankincense (Ban Liang), Costus Root (Ban Liang), Scrophularia Root (Xuan Shen, Yi Liang), Cimicifuga Rhizome (Chuan Sheng Ma, Yi Liang), Musk (Yi Fen). Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Take 2 qian per dose with one zhong zhan of water, decoct until reduced to five fen of liquid, strain, and take at any time.
Another Prescription [Source: *Sheng Hui Fang*]
Take two liang of Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian), remove the roots, and grind into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose with one zhong zhan of water, decoct until reduced to five fen of liquid, strain, and take warm at any time.
For pea sores caused by seasonal pathogens, where sores are the size of a fingernail and appear dark red or black [Source: *Sheng Hui Fang*]
Seven Sheep Gallbladders (extract juice), three liang of Mutton Fat. Mix the two ingredients and boil in a silver pot for five to seven boils. After cooling, massage and apply onto the sores.
Apply four to five times daily.
Another Prescription [Source: *Huo Ren Shu*]
Take two liang of Mirabilite (Chuan Mang Xiao), grind finely, and mix with Pig Bile to apply on the sores. Do not disturb them. Wait until the scabs fall off without leaving scars. It is beneficial to lie on fine yellow earth dust.
If this disease presents with dysuria and hematuria, it indicates deterioration. If all sores turn black with eschars and fail to suppurate, the prognosis is fatal. Lack of treatment leads to severe outcomes.

Apply high-quality white honey over the entire body on the sores. Consuming honey frequently may also help. If the sores are ulcerated and painful, apply finely ground yellow earth.
For heat-toxic aggression causing pea sores due to seasonal pathogens [Source: *Sheng Hui Fang*]
Take two liang of Sophora Root (Ku Shen), cut finely, and decoct in two da zhan of water until reduced to one zhan. Strain and divide into two doses, taken three to four times daily.
For early-stage pea sores caused by seasonal pathogens [Source: *Sheng Hui Fang*]
Take half a liang of Rhubarb (Chuan Da Huang), cut into pieces and lightly stir-fried. Decoct in one da zhan of water until reduced to seven fen. Strain and divide into two doses, taken three to four times daily.
Another Prescription [Source: *Qian Jin Fang*]
Take half a liang of Indigo Naturalis (Qing Dai), grind finely, and take mixed with fresh well-water, three to four times daily. Another method uses genuine Persian Indigo Naturalis, sized like a date.
Another Prescription [Source: *Qian Jin Fang*]
Take one liang of Costus Root (Mu Xiang), crush it, and decoct in one da zhan of water until reduced to six fen. Strain and take warm at any time. *Sheng Ji Zong Lu* records using two liang, decocted in three sheng of water to yield one sheng, taken in one dose.

Wash with thickly boiled juice from Sorghum Straw (Shu Rang). If incorrect usage occurs, healing will not be immediate. *Sheng Ji Zong Lu* states: if sores turn black, apply crushed garlic as a poultice.

Cut Birch Bark (Hua Mu Pi) and decoct the juice. Take warm to achieve relief.
Another Prescription for treating seasonal heat diseases and pea sores
Boil Rape Greens (Yun Tai) juice and wash the affected area.
Another Prescription [Source: *Qian Jin Fang*]
If sores are red-black and the size of mustard seeds, decoct Mutton Fat and massage/apply it.
Another Prescription [Source: *Qian Jin Fang*]
Mix Vigna Angularis Husk (Xiao Dou Xie) with Egg White (Ji Zi Bai) and apply.
Another Prescription [Source: *Qian Jin Fang*]
Wipe the area with cloth used during menstruation.
Another Prescription [Source: *Qian Jin Fang*]
If children come into contact with menstrual blood, bathe them with water containing it.
Treats sores caused by epidemic diseases [Source: *Zhou Hou Fang*]
Massage the entire body with good honey. Alternatively, decoct Cimicifuga Rhizome (Sheng Ma) in honey for application, wiping frequently. *Wai Tai Mi Yao* and *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* record: This is an epidemic macular eruption caused by abnormal annual qi. It spreads rapidly over the head, face, and body, resembling fire blisters, all topped with white serum. They rupture and regenerate quickly. Without immediate treatment, severe cases result in death within days.
After recovery, the scars remain purple-dark for a year before fading. This is evil toxic qi. People say it originated from capturing enemies in Nanyang during the Jianwu era of Eastern Han, hence called "Slave Sores" (Lu Chuang). Physicians have studied treatments with efficacy.
Treats sores caused by cold damage, seasonal heat toxicity, spreading rapidly over head, face, and body, resembling fire blisters with white serum, rupturing and regenerating.
Malva Verticillata (Kui Cai, boiled soft), Garlic (Suan), Vinegar Sauce (Ji). Mix well. Eat urgently at onset. Delayed treatment is fatal. However, post-recovery scars remain black for a year. This is evil seasonal qi.
Another Prescription [Source: *Zhou Hou Fang*]
Decoct Cimicifuga Rhizome (Sheng Ma) in water, soak cotton, and wash the area. Soaking in Vinegar (Ku Jiu) is better but causes intolerable dryness and pain.
Shui Jie San (Water-Resolving Powder): Treats pain from sores caused by epidemic heat qi. Releases the muscle layer and induces sweating.
Ephedra Stem (Ma Huang, Yi Liang, nodes removed), Scutellaria Root (Huang Qin, Er Fen), Peony Root (Bai Shao, Er Fen), Cinnamon Twig (Gui Xin, Er Fen). Crush and sieve. Mix with warm water and take two fang cun bi. Cover to induce sweating. Take twice daily. Reduce dosage upon recovery. Avoid Seaweed (Hai Zao) and Chinese Cabbage (Song Cai).
Long Nao San (Borneol Powder): Treats epidemic pea sores where red sores have not fully erupted, accompanied by mental restlessness, mania, panting, delirium, or visual hallucinations.
Grind one qian of Borneol (Long Nao) finely. Mix with fresh Pig Heart Blood (Zhu Xin Xue) drop by drop to form pills the size of a chicken head. Take one pill per dose with Purple Gromwell Root Decoction (Zi Cao Tang). Mental state stabilizes shortly. Sleep promotes further eruption. Follow standard care for recovery.

Drinking Ferrous Sulfate Solution (Tie Jiang) leads to recovery.

Consume one sheng of Sesame Seeds (You Ma). Diarrhea must occur; this prevents the formation of white serum. Highly effective.
Another Prescription
Crush Turnip Roots (Man Jing Gen) to extract juice. Pierce the sores and apply the juice.
