The so-called "Shi Qi" disease (Seasonal Epidemic Disease) is caused by the abundance of damp-toxic qi, which accumulates in the Spleen and Stomach. If there is heat within, it causes newly ingested food to stagnate and steam without being digested, leading to constipation and difficult urination. Consequently, the body and face turn yellow, with colors resembling orange peel or peach branches.

Treats Shi Qi after three days; sudden fullness and hardness in the heart region and heat in palms/soles lead to jaundice. Untreated, it is fatal. Xu Ren Ze's treatment for Ji Huang (Acute Jaundice). This disease initially resembles Tian Xing Bing (Epidemic Disease). By the fifth or sixth day, if jaundice is severe, tears, sweat, saliva, and urine become dark like cypress sap, and the whites of the eyes are yellow. In its most severe state, it is indistinguishable from the worst cases of Tian Xing Bing. If reaching this critical stage, one must rescue using Ban Xia Qi Wei Tang (Pinellia Five-Ingredient Decoction) used for severe Tian Xing Bing. If not yet that severe, follow the subsequent methods. Acute Jaundice begins similarly to Epidemic Disease. After two to three days of Epidemic Disease, administer Ma Huang Wu Wei Tang (Ephedra Five-Ingredient Decoction) to induce sweating and dissipate the jaundice pathogen.
Ingredients: Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, 3 liang, remove joints), Gan Ge (Puerariae Radix, 5 liang), Shi Gao (Gypsi Fibrosus, 8 liang, ground), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 6 liang), Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, 2 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Cut herbs. Add 8 sheng of water, boil down to 1.7 sheng. Strain. Divide into three warm doses. Space doses by the time it takes a person to walk ten li. After taking, cover with blankets to induce slight sweating to disperse the pathogen.
After inducing sweat with Ma Huang Wu Wei Tang, before resting, after three to five days, administer Zhi Zi Wu Wei Tang (Gardenia Five-Ingredient Decoction) to induce purgation.
Ingredients: Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, 12 pieces, split), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 3 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 liang), Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, 3 liang), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 6 liang).
Preparation and Administration: Cut herbs. Add 8 sheng of water, decoct the first four ingredients to 2.6 sheng. Strain. Add Mang Xiao, stir until dissolved. Divide into three warm doses. Administer every interval equivalent to walking ten li.
Treats epidemic jaundice with madness, irritability, heat, oppression, and loss of recognition.
Usage: Take one large, old Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus). Soak in 9 he of fresh drawn water to extract juice. Add half a he of honey and 8 fen of Po Xiao (Natrii Sulfas). Mix until dissolved. Divide into two doses. Recovery follows.
Treats early-stage Shi Qi Jaundice. Initially, only heaviness and discomfort in the limbs are felt. Soon, the eyes turn yellow, followed by the face, and finally the whole body. If urine dripped on white paper stains like cypress sap, the heat-toxin has entered internally. Treat urgently. If treated immediately upon sensation:
Usage: Use Gua Di Chi Dou San (Melon Tip and Red Bean Powder) insufflated into the nose. If several sheng of yellow fluid discharge, recovery is likely. If the disease is deep, examine the sides under the tongue for diffuse white vessels. Cut them open with a reed knife; if several sheng of purple blood flow, it stops. This requires skilled practitioners. Improper cutting may sever blue vessels under the tongue, causing uncontrollable bleeding. Alternatively, cauterize these vessels with a heated spinning iron. Simultaneously, administer pills made from Gua Di (Cucumeris Fructus) and Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus). This promotes bowel and urinary discharge. After blistering and cauterization of yellow sweat, avoid miscellaneous foods. It is also said that one must distinguish between "Sitting Yellow" and "Yellow Sitting." One method involves drinking bamboo porridge.
Another Formula.
Soak eggs in vinegar and wine overnight. Swallow several egg whites.
Another Formula.

Another Formula.
Ingredients: Sheng Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, juice 2 sheng), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, 20-30 pieces), Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, 1 sheng, cut).
Preparation and Administration: Add 5 sheng of water, boil down to 3 sheng. Strain. Add Ge Gen juice. Divide into five doses.
Another Formula.
Use blood from a golden-legged hen. Administer as food. Eat hot. Drink the juice completely during the Yin hour (3-5 AM). It will not recur. Adding a little salt and fermented bean curd is better.
Yin Chen Tang (Artemisia Decoction): Treats Shi Qi and Epidemic diseases where stasis-heat is internal, stagnating and steaming, transforming into jaundice.
Ingredients: Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, 6 liang), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Semen, 3 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Cut herbs. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1.5 zhan of water, decoct until 0.8 zhan remains. Strain. Take warm at any time.

Preparation and Administration: Coarsely grind and sieve. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1.5 zhan of water, decoct until 1 zhan remains. Strain. Take warm after meals.

Ingredients: Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, 3 fen), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, 3 fen), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 3 fen), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, steamed, 1 fen), Xing Ren (Pruni Semen, skin/tip removed, fried, 3 fen), Dou Chi (Fermented Soybean, 1.5 fen, soaked in water and separately ground), Chang Shan (Dichroae Radix, 5 qian), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, vinegar-roasted, half liang), Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus, skin removed, oil pressed out, 1 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Mix with malt sugar syrup to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 3 pills per dose, washed down with water. Vomiting and purging indicate efficacy. If not cured, add one pill. If feeling abnormal, take immediately.
Yin Chen Wan (Artemisia Pill): Treats Epidemic Heat Disease becoming jaundice after 7-8 days, with yellow face/body, chest fullness, and wheezing.
Ingredients: Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, 3 liang), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 5 liang), Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Semen, 2 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 2 liang), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, roasted, 2 liang), Chang Shan (Dichroae Radix, 2 liang), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 2 liang), Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus, skin/heart removed, roasted, 1 liang), Chi (Fermented Soybean, 3 he, roasted), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 2 liang).
