The etiology of irregular menstruation in women lies in labor and fatigue damaging the Qi and Blood, leading to a deficient constitution susceptible to Wind-Cold pathogens. The Wind-Cold lodges within the uterus (Bao Gong), damaging the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel).
This is because the Chong and Ren vessels are the "Sea of the Twelve Meridians," both originating from the uterus. The Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian and the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian are exterior-interior pairs, governing menstruation below. When Wind-Cold lodges in the meridians and contends with Qi and Blood, blood becomes stagnant due to cold, resulting in menstruation that is not smooth or unobstructed.
Upon pulse diagnosis: if pathogenic factors invade from the Cun Kou (Radial Pulse) upwards, it is named "Jie" (a specific pathological state). The pulse arrives taut like a zither string; the patient suffers from lower abdominal pain, irregular menstruation, and sores in the orifices. Furthermore, the pulse at the Guan position of the left hand corresponds to the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian; a deep pulse indicates Yin pathology, primarily associated with irregular menstruation and lumbar-abdominal pain. A slippery Chi pulse suggests substantial Qi and Blood, yet menstruation is absent. Additionally, an interrupted pulse at the Chi position of the left hand also indicates irregular menstruation. Moreover, if the Cun and Guan pulses are harmonious as usual, but the Chi pulse is absent or unreachable, this too signifies irregular menstruation, likely accompanied by lower abdominal pain radiating to the waist, caused by Qi stagnation attacking upward to the Bao Ge (uterine diaphragm).
