Postpartum irregular menstruation is caused by the depletion of Qi and Blood during childbirth, leaving the body in a state of deficiency that has not yet recovered. Pathogenic factors of wind, cold, and heat invade the meridians, resulting in alternating chills and fever.

For women, the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) are the seas of the meridians; they both originate from the Bao Gong (Uterus) and are closely related to the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian and the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. These two meridians... circulate... proverbs... inevitably numerous. If an infant loses breast milk, the limbs will inevitably become emaciated, the abdomen distended with visible blue veins, hair dry and scorched, and the child may crave eating dirt. This condition is named "Wugu" (Innocent Disease). If there is an excess of menstrual blood, it should not be forcibly stopped with medication. If one year or two years postpartum, menstruation does not flow but there are no other diseases, why take medicine? Or if exhaustion injures Qi and Blood, causing them to be too deficient to flow, simply administer herbs that strengthen the Spleen and Stomach and nourish Qi and Blood, and flow will naturally resume. Using herbs such as Achyranthes Root (Niuxi), Safflower (Honghua), Broomwood (Sumu), Drynaria Resin (Ganqi), Blister Beetle (Mengchong), and Leech (Shuizhi) to promote flow would cause great harm.
