The so-called dampness disease arises from the deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach, allowing pathogenic water-dampness to invade. Parasites within the abdomen move, thereby eroding tissues and forming ulcers. These ulcers are difficult to detect because the parasites move internally. This condition often results from prolonged dysentery or residual heat accumulating in the abdomen after illness. Symptoms include inability to eat, mental confusion with drowsiness, body fever, heaviness in bone joints, loss of luster in teeth, a completely white tongue surface, and fine sores resembling millet seeds. If sores appear on the upper lip, it indicates that parasites are eroding the Zang organs, leading to mental restlessness and distress. If sores appear on the lower lip, it indicates erosion of the lower part, causing anal ulceration and cracking. In severe cases, all Zang and Fu organs are eroded, sores form on both upper and lower teeth, teeth turn purple-black, and bloody discharge along with yellow watery fluid occurs. The Spleen and Stomach are paired and symbolize the Earth element. The Stomach is the sea of water and grain, while the Spleen is responsible for grinding and digesting food. The essence of water and grain transforms into Blood and Qi to nourish the Zang and Fu organs. If the Spleen and Stomach are deficient, the Earth Qi becomes weak; whether due to cold injury or heat damage, water and grain fail to digest, resulting in loose stools, which further damages the body with water-dampness. Following epidemic diseases, if there is deficiency-heat in the intestines and stomach, this is caused by the Three Corpses and Nine Worms becoming active due to deficiency, subsequently eroding the Zang organs, emerging upwards through the lips and mouth, and downwards to the anus. Stomach deficiency with rebellious Qi leads to vomiting and hiccups. Parasite erosion of Zang and Fu organs causes damage and decay, resulting in bloody stool; such conditions are fatal. The cause lies in the weakness of the Spleen and Stomach and the decline of Earth Qi, invaded by water-dampness, with parasite movement causing sores, hence named "Dampness Sores." It is also said that epidemic dampness is initially imperceptible, with normal movement but constant lack of strength, occasional mild dysentery or none. Once established, it transforms into vomiting, indicating internal parasite erosion of the Zang organs. Another type, acute constrained dampness, begins with abdominal pain and dysentery with mixed pus and blood, followed by obstruction of urination and defecation, headache and neck stiffness, lower abdominal fullness and urgency, and restlessness upon rising or sitting, also indicating internal Zang erosion. In all such cases, although initial symptoms do not manifest externally, the heart and abdomen are often restless, or sores appear on lips and tongue, and the anus ulcerates; these are incurable conditions.
