Damp tinea (Shi Xuan) also has specific morphological characteristics. The symptoms feel like insects crawling on the skin; the affected area is infiltrated, red, moist, and itchy. Scratching leads to exudation and the formation of sores. This is caused by the invasion of wind-toxic qi into the skin, hence it is called damp tinea.
Prescriptions:
Formula for Damp Tinea
Mingfan (Alum, [optional amount]) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, half liang each) Hufen (Cerussa, Lead Carbonate) Huangdan (Lithargyrum, Lead Monoxide) Shuiyin (Mercurius, Mercury, two qian each). Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Use one liang of suzhi (pig fat), grinding until the mercury disperses into star-like particles.
Luoke San (Conch Shell Powder) Treats damp tinea with unbearable itching.
Luoke (Concha Ostreae, Oyster Shell, one liang) Luangfa hui (Ash of tangled hair, half liang) Longdan (Gentianae Radix, Gentian Root, half liang) Hufen (Cerussa, Lead Carbonate, half liang, ground finely). Grind the above herbs into a fine powder, ensuring uniform mixing with the Hufen. Apply mixed with oil.
Huangbai San (Phellodendron Bark Powder) Treats damp tinea with unbearable itching.
Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, Phellodendron Bark, remove coarse bark and grind into powder) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, Coptis Rhizome, remove rootlets) Hufen (Cerussa, Lead Carbonate, ground finely, one liang each) Xionghuang (Realgar, Realgar, ground finely, half liang). Grind the above herbs into a fine powder. First wash the affected area with rice water (Migan).
Formula for Treating Damp Tinea
Shechuangzi (Cnidii Fructus, Cnidium Fruit, one liang) Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, Phellodendron Bark, one liang) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, Coptis Rhizome, one liang) Hufen (Cerussa, Lead Carbonate, one liang, ground finely). Grind the above herbs into a powder. Add mercury the size of a jujube pit, and mix with pig fat (Zhigao).
Shuiyin Gao (Mercury Ointment) Treats damp tinea with unbearable itching.
Shuiyin (Mercurius, Mercury, two liang) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, Coptis Rhizome, two liang, remove rhizome base and grind into powder) Hufen (Cerussa, Lead Carbonate, two liang). Mix the above ingredients with half a jin of refined pig fat from the twelfth lunar month, grinding thoroughly until no mercury stars are visible.
Yingfen San (Lead White Powder? Note: Yingfen usually refers to lead white or similar mineral powder in ancient texts, often synonymous with Hufen but contextually distinct here) Treats damp tinea.
Yingfen (Stir-fried until black, ground finely, two liang) Lilu (Veratri Rhizoma, Veratrum Rhizome, remove rhizome base and grind into powder) Machanggen (Root of horse intestine plant?, one liang each, ground into powder). Mix and grind the above herbs uniformly. Adjust consistency with raw oil to form a paste.
Shechuangzi San (Cnidium Fruit Powder) Treats chronic damp tinea that does not heal.
Shechuangzi (Cnidii Fructus, Cnidium Fruit) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, Coptis Rhizome, remove rootlets) Nifen (Calomel/Mineral Mercury compound, likely Qingfen/Nifen). Divide the above herbs equally into a powder. Apply mixed with small amounts of oil. Using more Nifen is acceptable.
Qingfen San (Calomel Powder) Specifically treats damp tinea on the human face with miraculous efficacy.
Qingfen (Calomel, Mercurous Chloride) Banmao (Mylabris, Blister Beetle, remove wings and feet). Grind the above herbs finely. Dip a chicken feather in warm water and sweep/apply around the lesion. Immediate effect.
Another Formula (from *Shenghui Fang*) Treats damp tinea with unbearable itching.
Use one liang of Nifen (Calomel), mix with rice vinegar, and apply to the lesion.
Another Formula (from *Shenghui Fang*)
Use half a jin of Yangti gen (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii? Or specifically *Rumex* root often called Yangti in dermatology contexts, here likely *Rumex japonicus* root based on later usage), collected before sunrise. It must be a single stem without branches. Wash cleanly, cut finely, and pound until extremely soft. Mix appropriately with sheep milk.
Treating Damp Tinea and Impetigo (from *Qianjin Fang*)
Apply Damaren ren (Cannabis Seed, Hemp Seed) as a poultice. Heal within five days.
Treating Damp Tinea Sores
Scrape the sore to open it. Heat your finger and massage the area. Use Shechuangzi powder. First wash with decoction of Jiucai gen (Allii Tuberosi Radix, Garlic Chive Root), then apply pig fat from the twelfth lunar month.
Xiaodu Gao (Minor Toxic Ointment) Treats damp tinea and carbuncles that do not heal.
Apply Pengqi gao (Ointment of Potamon/Crab). (Note: The text mentions eating its flesh causes vomiting and purging, implying toxicity, so this is strictly external).
Another Formula (from *Bencao*) Treats damp scabies.
Pound Wuyi (Chrysanthemi Indici Flos? Or typically *Meliosma* fruit in this context, often translated as Chaste Tree Fruit or similar antipruritic herb), mix with white honey, and apply. Alternatively, pound and mix with calf's milk to treat all types of sores.
Jingjie San (Schizonepeta Powder) (from *Shengji Zonglu*) Treats long-standing damp tinea.
Take Jingjie sui (Schizonepeta Spike, Schizonepeta Flower Spike) in any amount. Place in a clay jar, seal tightly with salt mud, leaving only one small hole. Burn with charcoal to produce clear smoke. Remove the fire source, and seal the mouth with wet mud... (Text cuts off, implying calcination to retain properties).
Another Formula (from *Shenghui Fang*) Treats damp tinea with unbearable itching.
Take one crucian carp, about five cun long. Clean it but do not remove the scales. Insert one fen of sulfur powder into the fish's stomach through the mouth. Place on a clean brick... (Text cuts off, implying baking or roasting method).
Treating Tinea with Itching (from *Bencao*)
Use half a jin of Chu ye (Broussonetiae Folium, Paper Mulberry Leaf). Cut finely, pound until soft, and apply as a poultice to the tinea.
Dairen's "Ten Shapes and Three Therapies" states: There was a fifteen-year-old girl with damp tinea between her thighs, extending three to four cun in length down to her knees. When it flared up, the itching was unbearable, causing her to scratch incessantly. Neither hot water nor fire therapy was effective... (Text cuts off).
Dairen... (Text cuts off).
Remove... (Text cuts off).
Treating fistula tumors, damp tinea, and itching where the infiltration spreads daily and itching is unbearable. Scratching yields yellow fluid. Recurrence after healing. Also treating scabies. (From *Bencao*). Take Yangti gen (*Rumex* root), clean it to remove dirt, cut finely, and pound. Mix with strong vinegar. Wash the affected area thoroughly first, then wash with this solution. Apply once daily to heal. If made into powder and applied topically, it is also effective.
