Cui's Moxibustion Acupoints: This is the moxibustion therapy inherited from Cui Xiang (who served as Vice Director of the Secretariat). *Waitai Miyao* records Cui Xiang's family-prescribed formulas and Wang Baochen's empirical formulas, which have all been compiled. However, these formulas contain errors and mistakes. In Piling Commandery (modern Changzhou, Jiangsu), a stone inscription provides the most detailed record. I consulted various versions and collated them to compile this book. The formulas on this stone inscription are extremely detailed and meticulous. Treating patients according to this method has never failed. Often, a single session of moxibustion results in a cure. While serving in Yicheng, I suffered from long-term illness and physical weakness, and I also recovered using this method.
Generally speaking, sentient beings receive Qi from the Five Elements. If one's health preservation violates natural principles, it leads to the "Six Diseases." In the extensive records of Qibo and Huangdi, there are ancient classics. Treatment involves both medical intervention and moxibustion, significantly targeting this disease. "Bone-steaming" (Gu Zheng) is also known as "Transmitting Corpse" (Chuan Shi). For the living, it is called "Fu Lian" (Repeating Chain), also referred to as "Wu Gu" (Innocent). In men, the root of the disease lies in "Pi Qi" (accumulated qi/masses); in women, it lies in blood and Qi. Regardless of age, many contract this disease. Infants and young children are prone to transmitting the root of the disease. Its symptoms include: dry and erect hair, which may clump or scatter; possible lumps in the abdomen, or small nodules on both sides behind the head, up to five or six; night sweats during sleep; dreams of sexual intercourse with ghosts; clear vision but weak limbs; upward rushing of Qi, poor appetite, and gradual emaciation. Even if time is prolonged, death eventually comes from the exhaustion of Jing (Essence). I once served as Sima of Luozhou and saved thirteen people through thirty days of moxibustion. The number of cured cases exceeded two hundred. As for remedies like fox bone and otter liver, their efficacy is only heard of in past tales; rare items like gold teeth and copper noses seldom show results. This formula is superior for rescuing critical conditions. It not only treats bone-steaming but also addresses Qi disorders, wind disorders, miasma, consumptive diseases, pathogenic factors, and masses. The scope of such ailments is broad, and those saved by moxibustion cannot be fully recorded. Here, I briefly outline the general principles. Fearing that transmission might lead to errors and mislead future generations, I have now detailed the diagrams and shapes so that readers may easily understand and disseminate them widely. Relying on family-secret formulas, there is no need to invite famous doctors from outside or seek expensive medicines. Bringing back the soul and restoring life, what difficulty is there? For those encountering this disease, can they neglect this?
**First Set of Acupoints:** First, locate two acupoints. Have the patient stand upright. Take a thin string to measure, ensuring it does not stretch or shrink. Place it firmly against the flesh on the sole of the foot, left for men and right for women. Align the front end of the string with the tip of the big toe, and align the back end with the center of the heel. Pull the string backward along the calf,紧贴 the flesh straight up to the middle of the popliteal crease (back of the knee). Cut the string at the transverse crease. Then, have the patient untie their hair, parting it to both sides to expose the midline of the scalp. From the fontanelle, divide equally to the back of the head. Then, sit upright to determine the direction. Take the cut end of the string, align one end with the tip of the nose, and guide the string upward along the head to the back of the head, hanging down紧贴 the flesh. Guide the string downward along the spine until the end of the string. Mark the position on the spine with a black dot. This black dot is not the moxibustion site. Take another string, have the patient close their mouth, and place the string across the mouth, reaching the corners of the lips (kou). Hook the center of the string up to below the root of the nasal bridge. This aligns with the two corners of the lips; cut the string here. Straighten this string and measure horizontally from the previously marked black dot on the spine, ensuring levelness without high or low points. Fold the string in half first, mark the center with ink. Unfold the string and measure horizontally, placing the marked point exactly over the black dot on the spine as the center, ensuring both ends are level. Mark the two ends of the string with white circles. These white circles indicate the moxibustion acupoints. This completes the first set, locating two acupoints.
**Second Set of Acupoints:** Have the patient sit upright, slightly retracting the arms. Take a string around the neck forward, doubling it so it hangs down level with the Jiwei acupoint (sternocostal angle). Jiwei corresponds to the xiphoid process. If the xiphoid is indistinct, measure one cun below the bifurcation of the lower ribs on both sides of the chest; this is Jiwei. Cut the doubled string. Turn the back end of the string around towards the back of the neck, stopping the center at the heart area, aligning it precisely with the upper part of the thyroid cartilage (Adam's apple). The two ends of the string clamp the neck, hanging down along the spine; mark with ink. This black dot is not the moxibustion site. Take another string, have the patient close their mouth and measure horizontally, cutting at the corners of the lips. On the spine, measure horizontally from the black dot as before. Mark the two ends of the string with white circles. These white circle locations are the moxibustion acupoints. This completes the second set. Including the previous ones, there are four acupoints in total. Apply moxibustion simultaneously. During the day, apply seven moxa cones per acupoint, up to fourteen cones, accumulating to one hundred cones, or optimally one hundred fifty cones. When the sores are about to heal, follow the subsequent method to moxibustion two more acupoints.
**Third Set of Acupoints:** Use the string used in the second step to measure the lips. At the ends of the doubled string from the second step, on the black dots on the spine, where the spine is straight but not hard, stop the center of the string, aligning the center with the ink dot. The end of the hanging string marks two acupoints with white circles. These white circles are the moxibustion sites. This completes the third set of two acupoints, known as the "Four Flowers" (Si Hua) acupoints. Moxibustion these two acupoints, one hundred cones each. Three sets total six acupoints. Perform each on a Li Day (auspicious day). After measurement, apply fire immediately. Moxa from the third day of the third lunar month is best. After recovery, observe dietary and sexual restrictions for one hundred days, remain calm and quiet, and recuperate for one month. If not fully recovered after this period, re-moxibustion the original acupoints.
Regarding the differentiation and verification of conditions arising after bone-steaming, there are twenty-two types. All should be treated according to the above methods. (From *Jisheng Fang*)
1. Bladder Steaming: Red and yellow urine.
2. Genital Steaming: Nocturnal emission and spermatorrhea in men; irregular menstruation and leakage in women.
3. Brain Steaming: Dizziness and heat sensation in the head.
4. Marrow Steaming: Sensation of boiling heat in the marrow.
5. Bone Steaming: Blackening of teeth.
6. Tendon Steaming: Brittle nails.
7. Blood Steaming: Brittle hair.
8. Pulse Steaming: Irregular pulse rhythm.
9. Liver Steaming: Dizziness before hunger pangs.
10. Heart Steaming: Dry tongue, ulcers, or chest fullness/stuffiness.
11. Spleen Steaming: Dry/cracked lips or mouth ulcers.
12. Lung Steaming: Dry mouth with ulcers.
13. Kidney Steaming: Dry and brittle ears.
14. Bladder Steaming: Right ear brittleness.
15. Gallbladder Steaming: Loss of vision/luster in eyes.
16. Stomach Steaming: Pain under the tongue.
17. Small Intestine Qi: Involuntary diarrhea.
18. Large Intestine Steaming: Pain in the right nostril.
19. Sanjiao Steaming: Alternating chills and fever.
20. Flesh Steaming: Others feel hot, but the patient feels cold.
21. Skin Steaming: Skin and flesh resemble chicken skin (goosebumps).
22. Qi Steaming: High fever, inability to rest.
**Measurement Method for Acupoints** (From *Jisheng Fang*):
The size of acupoints varies with the body size of the individual. For men, use the left hand; for women, the right hand. Measure the middle segment of the finger, from the center of the proximal interphalangeal joint crease to the distal interphalangeal joint crease, as one cun.
**Method for Selecting Moxa** (From *Jisheng Fang*):
On the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu), before sunrise, select moxa that resembles human figures by intuition. Using this for moxibustion is particularly effective. I saw in a book (title forgotten) that there are no true human-shaped moxa. Assigning names based on intuition between light and dark makes all methods false; none are true. What is there to doubt?
**Method for Fire** (From *Jisheng Fang*):
Huangdi stated: Fire from pine, cypress, persimmon, mulberry, jujube, elm, willow, bamboo, etc., harms muscles and blood when used for moxibustion. Do not use them. To obtain fire, strike flint or use a crystal lens to focus sunlight (Solar Fire), which is optimal. On cloudy days, use locust wood fire, which is also good.
**Treating Consumptive Disease (Lao Zhai)**:
Moxibustion Gao Huang and Fei Shu acupoints, nine cones per acupoint. Perform on specific auspicious days. More moxibustion is better. After moxibustion, avoid fried, raw, cold, hot foods, and toxic substances for one hundred days. Abstain from sex, avoid wind and cold, reduce emotional fluctuations, remain calm, and recuperate. If not recovered after one month, re-moxibustion the initial acupoints.
**Formula for Moxibustion on Labor Disease** (From *Ruizhutang Fang*):
Count from the bottom to the third short tendon, slightly above the tip, moxibustion with a two-cun cone. Left for men, right for women. Also, count down from the nape to the third spinal groove, mark the acupoint, and moxibustion. The number of cones corresponds to the patient's age in years.
**Formula for Moxibustion on Lao Zhai**:
Gao Huang acupoints can restore life. Align with the umbilicus, find the corresponding point on the spine, and moxibustion. Effective. Do not use too many cones.
**Bone-Steaming Transmitting Corpse Disease**:
Alternating chills and fever, red lips or cheeks, dysentery, hematochezia, excessive salivation, variable appetite, tight pulses along the spine. Patients often cough and sweat at night. Pressing the muscles on both sides of the spine may reveal chest/heart fullness, shortness of breath, jaundice, emaciation, and depletion of paraspinal muscles, leading to bedridden state. Spontaneous movement in the chest indicates severe depletion of paraspinal muscles; moxibustion is difficult here. If moxibustion is performed, wait for chest muscle movement (which is abnormal). Do not select specific days; perform at noon. Apply seven cones. If the disease is known early and mild, choose an auspicious day at noon for best results. Position the patient prone, lifting the torso. Use the patient's thumb to press the rib head, extend the middle finger straight to the spine, marking the small tendon in the paraspinal muscle. From this mark, go up to the tip below the ear (midpoint). Bend a string from the initial mark up to the paraspinal mark. Mark again. Repeat upwards. Four points on one side, eight in total. Distance from the spine should be consistent and symmetrical. From the lifted tendon to the ear root, vertical line, total eight points. Apply fire simultaneously. Cone size like a date pit, firm. After moxibustion, surround the sitting area with ash three times, then go home without looking back. Avoid raw/cold meat, sexual activity, and miscellaneous foods. Upon recovery, resume normal life. If relapse occurs due to violation, condition worsens.
**Master Shen Su's Moxibustion for Bone-Steaming Cough**:
Measure horizontally from the ear canal, approximately three cun apart, locate the acupoint. Moxibustion three cones daily. By the eighth day, fourteen cones. Between the third and second thoracic vertebrae, take the left hand for men, right hand for women. Align thumb and index fingers, moxibustion east-west direction. Seven cones daily. By the eighth day, fifty cones each. After five more days, fifteen cones daily. For the leg, measure from the shoe-tie horizontal crease to the knee, outer tibia. Moxibustion seven cones daily. By the eighth day, complete thirty-five days of treatment. On the back, left for men, right for women, use thumb wrist crease aligned with finger head. Seven cones daily. By the eighth day, one hundred cones. For women with abdominal distension and amenorrhea, use left thumb, measure from umbilicus to lower abdomen, moxibustion at finger tip. Seven cones daily, total three hundred cones. Moxibustion diaphragm acupoints in the afternoon for morning issues, and vice versa.
**Another Moxibustion Method**:
Stand at the shoe-tie horizontal crease. Measure four fingers above the crease. Press the outer tibia at the middle segment of the limb; there is a small acupoint. Take a strand of hemp.
**Finger-Palm Acupoint** (From *Jingxiao Jishi Fang*): Treats labor disease. Use a paper strip to measure from the tip of the middle finger to the first palm crease, add half of that length (one and a half palms). Cut this strip in half, discard one half. Use this strip from the first cervical vertebra at the back of the neck...
**Umbilical Center Acupoint** (From *Jingxiao Jishi Fang*): Have the patient stand barefoot on flat ground. Use a wooden stick to measure from the ground to the umbilicus. Cut the bamboo stick...
**Cun Measurement Method** (From *Jingxiao Jishi Fang*): Measure the outer crease of the middle segment of the middle finger as one cun. Do not use the inner crease. Finger-Palm Acupoint uses one cun to mark two points. Umbilical Center Acupoint uses 1.2 cun to mark two points. Both measured from the original ink mark, spaced one cun and 1.2 cun respectively. Not one cun/1.2 cun on each side. For all finger-palm measurements, use left for men, right for women. Moxibustion seventy to one hundred cones per acupoint. Observe all taboos afterwards. (This formula by the physician takes effect immediately.)
**Wind-Cold Pathogen**:
When wind-cold Qi enters the interior, stagnates, and cannot disperse, it causes emaciation and aphonia, or throat obstruction with loss of voice, all caused by wind pathogen. Entering the zang organs is fatal. In corpse-jue (shijue) death, the pulse still moves. This is due to Yang meridians sinking and Yin meridians rising, causing Qi closure. Needle three fen deep and tonify. Take soot from the chimney, form into a pill, mix with water, and administer. Also needle the tip of the middle toe, removing nail like a leek leaf. Also needle the inner side under the big toenail, three fen from the nail.
**One Method**: On the second watch of Guihai night, when the Six Spirits gather, remove lower body clothing. Locate the slight depression on both sides below the waist, known in acupuncture as Yaoyan (Waist Eye). Stand semi-upright, mark with pen. Then lie face down on bed. Moxibustion seven small cones each time. Labor parasites may be vomited or excreted, bringing immediate peace, cutting off the root, preventing recurrence and contagion. Have the patient lie supine. Wet a leather paper strip, stick it straight from the high bone of the neck to the sacral spine. Wherever a spot dries first, that is the acupoint. Mark with pen, moxibustion twenty-one cones. Commonly said that Yaoyan should not be moxibustioned because it is not recorded in *Mingtang Jing*, this is incorrect. It is actually... (From *Yonglei Qianfang*)
**Incantation to Break Fu Lian**:
First, find a closed gourd, bury it underground. Open it on an auspicious day. Boil and take three spoons, mix into fat congee. Cut paper money, take to a new grave. Make the sick child face the road, back to the grave. Surround the grave and patient with paper money and new cloth. Place some paper money outside for the General Wudao. One person holds the gourd, another pierces the ground with a knife beside the seat. Place the gourd on the hole and sit on it. Have a healthy person hold two locks, pat the patient's back, chanting: "Fu Lian Fu Lian jie, Fu Lian Fu Lian bu jie, dao suo jie." (Break Fu Lian, break Fu Lian; if Fu Lian does not break, knife and lock break.) Chant again: "Living people specifically go up, dead ghosts specifically go down. Living and dead ghosts take different paths." After chanting, the healthy person throws two locks behind the patient. Ensure the locks face away from each other. If not, throw again until they face away. Return without looking back. On an auspicious day, have the patient ride a cart rut outside the city, facing the gate. Surround the patient with three sheng of water and three layers of ash. Make seven unfried cakes for General Wudao. Chant: "Heaven opens, Earth closes, living and dead take different paths. On this Wu Li day, release and return." After chanting, return without looking back. This method is very effective.
**Massage Method for Bone-Steaming**:
For patients with... diseases, who are necessarily emaciated with protruding spines. Have a strong man flex his thumb and middle finger,夹 the patient's spine. From the large curvature downwards to the end of the bones, rub, then upwards. Repeat twelve to thirteen times. Then use the middle finger to flick vigorously on both sides. If this is the case, the affected area will rise... Thin a bamboo tube like a sword, boil it several times. When hot, remove the tube, cover the ink-marked area, press for a long time. Break the corner with a knife. Boil the tube again and cup it. Yellow-white clear fluid will come out, followed by pus, sometimes worms. Repeat this cupping multiple times until all evil substances are expelled, then remove. Vision will become clear, body light.
