[Betel Nut Decoction]
Areca seed (Betel Nut) (freshly ground into powder, divided into three doses). All above herbs are finely sliced. Soak in two sheng of child's urine overnight. By next morning, decoct until one sheng remains.
Strain and discard the dregs. Divide into three doses. For each dose, mix evenly with the previously prepared Areca seed powder as described. Take warm on an empty stomach. If the patient walks for dozens of li, administer another dose. If the patient is male, the female prepares the decoction; if female, the male prepares it. After taking one or two doses, if vomiting or diarrhea occurs, do not take the third dose. If no vomiting occurs, proceed to the third dose. Disease located upper will cause vomiting; disease located lower will cause diarrhea. Evil substances expelled may include insects of abnormal colors, or hair-like filaments resembling tangled threads. Avoid wheat products, fatty meats, scallions, garlic, and vegetables for one month. During preparation and decoction, avoid letting mourners, pregnant women, chickens, or dogs see the process. Discard the dregs in a flowing stream.
[Whole Softshell Turtle Pill] (From *Zhizhi Fang*) Treats consumption (Lao Zhai). Deficient heat, cough, and wheezing.
Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu), Fritillaria Bulb (Beimu) (heart removed, 3 liang each), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao) (stir-fried until crisp, 0.5 liang each), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu) (2 liang), Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong) (1 liang), Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (0.5 liang), Apricot Seed (Xingren) (soaked, peeled, 3 liang). Coarsely chop the above herbs. Place in a thick porcelain vessel. Take one medium-sized live softshell turtle, slaughter alive, and remove the gallbladder from the head. Combine turtle meat, blood, and herbs. Soak together in five sheng of strong wine overnight. Seal tightly with paper. Next morning, simmer slowly over low heat until fragrant and cooked. Remove the turtle meat and allow the patient to eat as desired. Retain only the shell and bones, along with the herbs, dry by baking, and grind into powder. Use the wine used for soaking the herbs to mix with rice flour paste to form pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take seventy pills at any time, washed down with rice drink.
[Wanquan Yin] (Also known as Qinghao Yin, From *Shenghui Fang*) Treats all types of consumption diseases. Transmitted corpse consumption (Chuanshen Lao Zhai). Effective regardless of whether the disease is recent or long-standing. This medicine is miraculous.
Asafoetida (Awei) (1 fen, dissolved using child's urine), Licorice Root (Gancao) (large piece, 3 cun), Peach branch growing eastward (Dongyin Taozhi) (small bunch, 1握), Artemisia Annua Herb (Qinghao) (large bunch, peel 1 liang), Areca seed (Betel Nut) (1 liang, powdered), Scallion white (Congbai) (2 cun, with root). Soak the peach branch, mugwort/herb, and scallion white in two sheng of child's urine overnight. At the beginning of the fifth watch (early morning), decoct to obtain six he of liquid. Strain. Add Asafoetida and boil four times vigorously. Divide into two doses. When taking each dose, add half a liang of Areca seed powder and consume together. If nausea and vomiting occur, take the second dose after vomiting. Do not speak to the patient during administration, nor face the patient directly, to prevent evil insects from flying into the mouth or nose. If the patient is female, the male faces north to prepare and administer the medicine; if male, the female faces south. Avoid cats and dogs seeing the medicine. In spring, take twice; in autumn, take three times; total five times in a year. The consumption worms will be completely eliminated. Disease upper causes vomiting; disease lower causes diarrhea, expelling black worm-like hairs or horse-tail-like structures. Another version includes east-facing willow branches and omits scallion white.
[Wuzhi San] (Also known as Qingsangzhi Yin, From *Yifang Jicheng*) Formula to expel consumption worms.
Green Mulberry Branch (Qingsangzhi), Willow Branch (Liuzhi), Pomegranate Branch (Shiliuzhi), Peach Branch (Taozhi), Plum Branch (Meizhi) (7 stems each, approx. 4 cun long), Artemisia Annua Herb (Qinghao) (small bunch). Soak the above herbs in one sheng of child's urine with seven stems of scallion white (heads and leaves removed). Decoct until volume is halved. Strain. Add separately Benzoin Resin (Anxi Xiang) and Asafoetida (Awei), 1 fen each. Decoct again until one zhan remains. Filter and discard dregs. Mix in Cinnabar Powder (Chensha) 0.5 qian, Areca seed powder 1 fen, and Musk (Shexiang) one character (yi zi). Divide into two doses to be taken mixed. First dose at the beginning of the fifth watch; second dose at the third point of the fifth watch. By the Si hour, worms must be expelled. Red and white colored worms indicate salvageable condition; green and black indicate transmission to viscera, untreatable. Upon expulsion, immediately consume soft porridge. Keep warm and rest. Avoid sexual activity and cold/raw/toxic foods. Select auspicious days for preparation. Avoid cats, dogs, mourners, and unclean women seeing the process. Weishi's formula name is Qingsangzhi Yin, containing Podophyllum Rhizome (Guijiu) and Gastrodia Rhizome (Chijian), 5 qian each. For transmitted corpse consumption, this medicine must be taken first to expel worms, followed by syndrome-specific treatment. Do not use indiscriminately. If initially expelled worms are black, even excellent medicines will be ineffective. However, it prevents transmission to others. Another version omits pomegranate peel.
[Lan Zhi Fang] (From *Zhizhi Fang*) Kills consumption worms and evil insects, turning them into water.
Fresh Indigo Leaf (Sheng Lanqing Ye) (ground to extract natural juice, 1 large zhan), Realgar (Xionghuang), Calcined White Alum (Kubai Fan), Benzoin Resin (Anxi Xiang), Hard Red Agarwood Powder (Hongying Jiangxiang Mo) (0.5 qian each), Musk (Shexiang) (a small amount). Grind Realgar and others together. Add to Indigo juice. Take on an empty stomach at the beginning of the fifth watch on the first day of the month. Commonly used in the North for insect toxins and resolving various poisons.
[Runshen San] (From *Sanyin Fang*) Treats consumption with aversion to cold and fever. Dry mouth and throat. Spontaneous sweating, rough skin. Irritability.
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Astragalus Membranaceus Root (Huangqi), Lophatherum Herb (Danzhuye), Licorice Root (Gancao) (roasted), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Ophiopogon Tuber (Mendong) (equal parts). Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose. Decoct one zhan of water to 70%. If spontaneous sweating occurs irregularly, decoct with common wheat and barley. Take warm.
[Formula for Treating Consumption]
Costus Root (Muxiang) (2 liang), Ephedra Stem (Mahuang) (2 liang), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), Apricot Seed (Xingren), Mugwort Leaf (Aiye) (4 liang each). Soak herbs in one bottle of good wine for one month. Drink two cups daily. Take on an empty stomach.
[Xiebai San] Treats chronic cough. Lung deficiency leading to consumption. Hemoptysis and spitting of blood.
Softshell Turtle Shell (Biejia) (roasted, 2 liang), Deer Antler Glue (Luajiao) (3 fen), Licorice Root (Gancao) (roasted, 1 liang), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao) (stir-fried, 1 liang). Grind into powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Decoct with one zhan of water and one stem of Wild Leek (Xiebai), 2 cun long, until 60% remains. Before sleep and after meals, chew Wild Leek first, then take medicine. Three times daily.
[Exclusive Formula for Consumption]
Apricot Seed (Xingren) (1 sheng, peeled and cored, soaked in child's urine: 5 days in winter, 3 days in summer; rinse with fresh water), Walnut Kernel (Hutaoren) (49 pieces, soaked in hot water, peeled, preserved in honey), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) (1 liang), White Alum (Baifan) (0.5 liang). Boil into a paste. Form pills the size of bullet shots. Take one pill per dose. Dissolve in mouth. Take after meals.
[Zhudu Wan] (From *Yuyao Yuan Fang*) Treats men with emaciation and weak qi. Cough gradually developing into consumption.
Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu), Oyster Shell (Muli) (calcined, 4 liang each), Sophora Flavescens Root (Kushen) (3 liang). Grind into fine powder. Cook one pig stomach until soft, grind into paste. Mix with powder to form pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take 30-40 pills per dose, washed down with rice drink. Three to four times daily. Miraculous effect. Emaciated patients gain weight. Mechanism unfathomable. Li Jian (courtesy name Fangshu) of Yingchang's son experienced this efficacy. Administered to others with frequent success.
[Mingmu Dan] (From *Baiyi Xuanfang*) Treats consumption.
Natrii Chloridum Crystallisatum (Naosha), Borax (Pengsha), Male Rabbit Feces (Xiong Tu Fen) (equal parts). Grind into powder. Form pills with raw honey, size of mulberry seeds. Take seven pills per dose. Break 1 fen of Licorice Root. Rub in half a zhan of fresh water to extract strong juice. Swallow pills with this juice. Dosing dates: between the 1st and 15th of the lunar month. Time: beginning of the fifth watch. Patient must sit up. Pre-instruct patient not to make sound. Inhale quietly while swallowing. Making sound renders it ineffective. Cold water is acceptable if slightly warmed. Preparation must occur before the third watch on the 15th of the eighth lunar month. If urgent, prepare on a bright night before the 15th. Avoid women, unrelated people, chickens, dogs, cats, and livestock seeing the process. If anyone passes by during preparation or administration, the patient must remain silent. Remember carefully.
[Formula for Expelling Worms and Relieving Consumption] Benefits skin and complexion. Clears consumption heat.
Areca seed (Betel Nut) (1.5 liang), Gentiana Scabra Root (Longdan) (1 liang), Dried Lacquer (Ganxi) (0.5 liang). Grind into fine powder. Honey-pilulate, size of mulberry seeds. Take 10-15 pills per dose, swallowed with hot water.
[Burning Incense Method for Consumption Patients] (From *Bencao*)
Scrophularia Root (Xuanshen) (1 jin), Nardostachys Root (Gansong) (6 liang). Grind into powder. Mix with one jin of honey. Seal in a bottle and bury for ten days. Retrieve. Burn six liang of charcoal. Add six liang of honey back into the bottle, bury for five days. Retrieve and burn completely. Let the patient inhale the aroma. The disease will heal spontaneously.
[Formula for Treating Consumption Disease]
Brocade-patterned Rhubarb (Jinwen Dahuang) (0.5 jin), Dragon's Blood (Xuejie) (5.5 qian, powdered). Boil five sheng of sour vinegar in a clay pot until dry. Mix with powdered Dragon's Blood. Honey-pilulate, size of bullet shots. Take on an empty stomach. Men: wash down with Green Costus Root (Qingmuxiang) decoction. Women: wash down with Angelica Sinensis (Danggui) and Safflower (Honghua) wine.
[Chaihu San] (From *Jingxiao Liangfang*) Treats pathogen entering meridians. Body fatigue, muscle heat. Also treats latent summerheat.
Bupleurum Root (Chaihu) (4 qian), Licorice Root (Gancao) (2 qian). Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose. Decoct one zhan of water to 80%. Take hot after meals. Moistens lungs in winter. Relieves consumption injury in summer. Suitable for old and young.
[Formula for Treating Consumption Qi]
Cruciferous Vegetable Seeds (Xiao Jiezi) 3 sheng, ground into powder. Place in silk bag. Soak in three sheng of wine for seven days. Strain. Take warm, half sheng initially, gradually increasing to one and a half sheng. Prepare when convenient. Taboos same as other medicines.
[Shenchuan Gao] (From *Benshi Fang*) Treats consumption with hematemesis and erratic bleeding.
Use Jiancao (One Pound). Available in Wuzhou and Taizhou, but only Wuzhou variety is usable. Shape resembles Gardenia Root (Qiancao) and Asarum (Xixin). Clean and grind into powder. Mix with one jin of raw honey to form a paste. Store in silver or ceramic vessel. Do not touch iron. Nine steaming and nine drying cycles. One cycle per day. Patient rises at fifth watch, sits facing east. No talking. Take medicine like porridge when needed. Four spoons per dose. Wait a while, then press down with thin millet drink. Medicine taken cold. Porridge should not be too hot. Vomiting or diarrhea does not matter. For chronic lung damage with hemoptysis, one dose cures. For ordinary cough with erratic bleeding, every dose is miraculous.
A nobleman in his fiefdom suffered from consumption. His elder showed him this formula. It took nine days to prepare. The night before, the patient dreamed of being warned not to take the medicine the next day. On the second day, just as he was about to take it, an object fell from the roof, overturning the container. He could not take it. He prepared it again. Just as he was about to take it, a cat covered the container. He could not eat it. He prepared it a third time, but before completion, the person died. The miracle of this medicine is such. For minor erratic bleeding, one sip cures. Some say this belonged to Lady Lu Nongshi. Villager Ai Fu once recounted this personally. He later included it in *Daguan Bencao*, but people did not recognize it and did not believe it much.
[Taishang Yannian Fang Sheng Zhuihun San] (From *Huatuo Zhongzang Jing Fang*) Treats emaciated consumption nearing death.

Decoct one sheng of child's urine with one liang of powder until hot. Take on empty stomach and at noon. Effective in five days.

Grind all into fine powder. Melt wine wax and turtle blood together to form a paste. Mix in remaining herbs to form a dough. Roll into pills the size of mung beans. Use one pill per dose. Attach to a hook. Tie a crimson thread, one zhang two chi long, to the hook. Wrap pill slightly with silk thread. Patient eats two bites of cake first. Then takes the pill. After some time, the thread moves. Pull out forcefully. Immediately throw into hot pan with iron tongs and fry quickly. Prepare on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month before sunrise. Do not let anyone see.
