Lao Zhai (Chronic Consumptive Disease) is not a single entity. Initially, it invariably arises from physical weakness and the exhaustion of the Heart and Kidney due to overwork. Additionally, external pathogenic factors such as Wind, Cold, Heat, and Dampness may first cause Malaria (Nue Ji), leading to coughing. If Cold pathogens penetrate inward and treatment is neglected or improper, combined with failure to preserve health, excessive sexual activity, and dietary irregularities, it eventually develops into Lao Zhai. The manifestations include emaciation of muscles, dryness of hair and skin, alternating chills and fever, night sweats, seminal emission or white turbidity, abdominal masses, or small nodules on both sides of the back of the head that may aggregate or disperse. Patients may also experience coughing with phlegm or expectoration of pus and blood. Upon progression, the condition may differentiate into twenty-four, thirty-six, or ninety-nine types. There is also the concept of "Five Corpses" (Wu Shi). Although names and presentations vary, the damage essentially affects the Five Viscera. Various texts state that there are parasites gnawing between the Heart and Lungs; thus, treatment should first eliminate parasites, followed by nourishing the Five Viscera. Regarding "Chuan Shi" (Transmitted Corpse), named Gu Zheng (Bone Steaming), it encompasses Shi Zhu, Lao Zhu, Chong Zhu, Du Zhu, Leng Zhu, Shi Zhu, and Gui Zhu. Lao Zhai is mostly due to deficiency of Qi and Blood, often caused by errors in using diaphoretic or purgative treatments during mild illnesses. Alternatively, if Six Qi pathogens cause coughing that is not resolved, and tonics are administered prematurely, chronic cough results. Combined with sexual indulgence, excessive drinking, and forced eating, it transforms into alternating chills and fever. Only mild tonic medications are suitable. Those who can eat double portions of meat and have strong appetites are diagnosed with Chuan Shi, which can even lead to the death of the entire family. Medications such as Tian Ling Gai (Human Skull Cap), Zi He Che (Placenta), Hu Gan (Fox Liver), Da Zhua (Otter Claw), and She Xiang (Musk) exist but are rarely used. It is said in the world that ghosts attach to the body and worms devour the viscera. Women are prone to this disease, likely transmitted through amenorrhea postpartum.

Treating Labor Disease [from *Bai Yi Xuan Fang*]

First, decoct Qinghao, Tao, Liu, Li, Sang branches, Fengye, and Chi in 3 sheng of water measured by official standard, reduce to about half a sheng, strain. Add Anshixiang, Tian Linggai, Hu Fei Nei Gu, Biejia, Taoren, and Tongzi Xiaoshui, decoct together to obtain juice, strain, yielding 4-5 he. Mix Binglang and Shexiang evenly, prepare as one dose. Take warm in the morning, cover with quilt to induce sweating. Wipe sweat with cloth to check for tiny parasites, then burn the cloth. Diarrhea will follow, expelling parasites. Burn any living parasites in fire and discard in flowing water. Do not let the patient know the medication; continue this secrecy thereafter. After ten days, when vitality recovers, administer another dose, following the same burning and disposal method, until no parasites remain. If the illness is not critical, peace can be achieved. If critical, wait until near death, then administer to subsequent infected individuals. The primary patient cannot be saved, but transmission to others will cease.
Li Yingben, a retired official residing in Yuanzhou, was formerly involved in legal matters in Xiangzhou regarding Han Sifu, a Privy Councilor. After the war, he was seen in Yichun, claiming to have obtained office through military service and now living in leisure. When asked about his family by guests, he shed tears, saying, "I previously had three children. The eldest son, upon buying an empty house with no inhabitants, suddenly felt heart palpitations and back chill, contracting Labor Disease, nearing death. It transmitted to his younger sister. After the eldest died, the daughter's illness became critical. Then it transmitted to the third son, with identical symptoms. I was terrified, prayed to the City God, offering noodles and rice monthly to wandering monks, hoping to meet a strange person, promising 300,000 cash as reward." Days later, while going to the market, before Kaiyuan Temple, a man in Daoist robes called out, "Commandant, I hear your household suffers from Transmitted Corpse Labor. I have a prescription to offer." Entering the temple, he refused to give his name. Li wrote it down. The Daoist said he wished to cross Hunan. Li offered food, but he declined, saying he had already eaten. Li offered money, but he said he had travel funds. Before leaving, he emphasized that the prescription relies mainly on Tian Linggai and Hu Fei Nei Gu, requiring careful search; green snake brain is optional. One day before taking medicine, one must make a grand offering to the City God for spiritual assistance. Li asked, "If seeking divine help, why use medicine?" The Daoist replied, "Not so," and departed west. Li, finding the matter unusual, respectfully followed the advice. Upon preparing the medicine, he set up five deity positions with ten dishes each, treating them like guests, honoring the City God. He also arranged wine and food to reward yin soldiers. At home, he set a position for the messenger before the sickbed. Shortly after taking the medicine, significant bowel movements occurred, expelling seven worms. They were red like cooked meat, turning white, about one cun long, 7-8 fen wide, pointed at the front, square at the back, with a mouth near the front abdomen and legs around the body, resembling fish bones, thin as needle tips and curved. They were dead. Burning them proved difficult; iron rods could not pierce them. The illness decreased immediately. A subsequent dose expelled four small worms, after which he recovered completely. Ten years later, his physique is radiant, free from disease. The Daoist never returned. This prescription was passed to the grandson of the Privy Councilor, Shizhong Xidao.
La Xing Tang (Wax and Apricot Decoction) [from *Yixue Qiewen*]: Treats remote and recent Labor Disease.
