In febrile diseases, if the pathogenic heat-toxin qi is not eliminated, both the exterior and interior remain unresolved. Heat accumulates in the Bladder (Bladder organ), then flows into the Small Intestine (Small Intestine organ). Excessive heat causes dryness of the Spleen and Stomach (Spleen and Stomach organs) and a deficiency of body fluids (Jinye, essential fluids), resulting in urinary retention (Xiaobian butong).
Formulas
Huashi San (Slippery Stone Powder) [from *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats febrile disease where heat-toxin qi is congested, causing fullness and distension in the heart and abdomen, and urinary retention.
Ingredients: Hua Shi (Talcum, 2 liang); Ting Li Zi (Descurainiae Semen, 1 he, stir-fried between papers until purple); Zhu Ling (Polyporus, 1 liang, remove black skin); Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed); Han Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 1 liang); Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, 0.5 liang, crushed).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhuan of water, decoct until 0.6 zhuan remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
Mutong San (Akebia Decoction Powder) [from *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats febrile disease with urinary retention, or dysuria with pain.
Ingredients: Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, crushed); Hu Po (Amber, 1 liang each); Chi Shao Yao (Red Peony Root); Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange, bran-fried until reddish-yellow); Mao Gen (Imperatae Rhizoma, crushed); Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed, 0.5 liang each).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhuan of water, decoct until 0.6 zhuan remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
Danggui San (Angelica Decoction Powder) [from *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats febrile disease with urinary retention and pain in the Small Intestine.
Ingredients: Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 3 fen, crushed and lightly stir-fried); Zi Qin (Scutellariae Radix); Kui Zi (Abutilonis Semen); Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen); Yu Bai Pi (Ulmus Alba Bark, crushed, 0.5 liang each).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. For each dose, mix 2 qian of powder with one small zhuan of warm raw Di Huang juice (Rehmanniae Radix juice) and take it. Administer at any time.
Chifuling San (Red Polyporus Powder) [from *Shenghui Fang*]: Treats febrile disease with urinary retention, mental restlessness, and fullness/stuffiness in the lower abdomen.
Ingredients: Chi Fu Ling (Red Polyporus); Chi Shao Yao (Red Peony Root); Kui Zi (Abutilonis Semen); Qu Mai (Dianthi Herba); Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, crushed); Chuan Mang Xiao (Mirabilitum, 1 liang each).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhuan of water and two stalks of Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), decoct until 0.6 zhuan remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
Shiwei San (Pyrrosiae Folium Powder): Treats febrile disease with urinary retention.
Ingredients: Shi Wei (Pyrrosiae Folium, remove hairs); Qu Mai (Dianthi Herba, 1 liang each); Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, crushed); Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed); Zi Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 0.5 liang each); Kui Zi (Abutilonis Semen, 3 he).

Dongkuizi San (Malvae Semen Powder): Treats febrile disease with dark, scanty, and obstructed urination.
Ingredients: Dong Kui Zi (Malvae Semen); Hua Shi (Talcum, 2 liang each); Chi Fu Ling (Red Polyporus); Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, crushed, 2 liang each); Mao Gen (Imperatae Rhizoma, crushed).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhuan of water, decoct until 0.6 zhuan remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
Formula for treating febrile disease with urinary retention and bloody dysuria:
Ingredients: Da Ma Gen (Cannabis Sativa Root, 2 liang); Luan Fa Hui (Ash of Human Hair, 2 qian).
Preparation and Administration: First, decoct the Ma Gen in 1 large zhuan of water until 0.6 zhuan remains, strain, add the Luan Fa Hui, mix evenly, and take in one dose.
Another Formula:
Ingredients: Sheng Gan Di Huang (Dried Raw Rehmannia Root, 3 fen); Pu Huang (Typhae Pollen); Yu Jin (Curcumae Longae Radix, 0.5 liang each).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with thickly decocted Kui Gen soup (Malvae Root soup). Administer at any time.
Another Formula:
Ingredients: Hua Shi (Talcum); Shi Yan (Swallowstone, 1 liang each).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into an extremely fine powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with Cong Bai soup (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus soup), at any time.
Ziyin Huaqi Tang (Nourishing Yin and Promoting Qi Transformation Decoction): Treats difficulty in urination caused by excessive intake of hot-natured medicines, where other treatments are ineffective, or unbearable stuffiness and pain below the umbilicus.
Ingredients: Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried and remove stamens); Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, stir-fried); Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, equal parts).
Preparation and Administration: Cut the ingredients into small pieces. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 3 zhuan of water, decoct until 1 zhuan remains, strain, and take warm before meals. If there is no urination day and night, add Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma).
Question: How does this formula promote diuresis?
Answer: Without Yang, Yin cannot be generated; without Yin, Yang cannot transform. It is also said that the Bladder (Bladder organ) is the residence of body fluids (Jinye); when Qi reaches it, urine can be excreted. Excessive intake of hot medicines leads to the loss of Yin. These two herbs (Huang Lian, Huang Bo) assist Yin, allowing Qi to transform, thus enabling urination. Some suggest using Zishen Wan (Kidney-Nourishing Pill), which acts even faster.
