When patients with febrile disease (Re Bing) take cold-natured medicines or drink excessive amounts of cold water, pathogenic factors may knot in the epigastrium (Xin Xia). Consequently, abdominal distension and fullness (Xin Fu Zhang Man) occur. This is due to deficiency of the Zang organs, often because there were pre-existing accumulations or old habits within the body. Alternatively, after vomiting or purging treatments, if the disease does not resolve, and heat exists both internally and externally, abdominal distension and fullness will also occur. This indicates an Excess pattern (Shi Zheng).

Urine may be red or white and turbid; in severe cases, frequent urination or seminal emission occurs. Nightmares of sexual intercourse with spirits occur, and the patient becomes increasingly emaciated. This is caused by excessive mental exertion, weakening of Heart Qi, dispersion of Yang Qi, failure of Spirit to gather, and Yin having no function. Treatment is laborious.

Canju Wan (Ginseng and Tangerine Peel Pill) [Source: *Shibian Liangfang*]: Treats heat rising from the abdomen, circulating upwards along the chest and axillae, encircling the neck and forehead. Initially feeling slightly warm, it gradually becomes intense heat. Attacks occur without fixed timing, worsening when hungry. There is discomfort in the Zhongwan region, increased appetite but weight loss, sallow complexion, lack of luster in muscles, and dry lips. This is due to inherent Spleen Qi weakness, combined with the mistaken administration of heat-inducing drugs after recovery from other illnesses. The drug enters the Spleen, causing Spleen Heat which digests grain quickly and draws in food, consuming muscle tissue. The pulse is soggy and weak. Treatment follows:
Ingredients: Dried Tangerine Peel (Chenpi - 3 liang), Wheat Grain (Maizi - 1 liang), Ginseng Root (Renshen - 1 liang). Process the above into a fine powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills per dose with rice water, before meals. If coughing is present, add Schisandra Berry (Wuweizi) 1 liang.
