The *Neijing* (Inner Canon) states that swelling caused by various diseases is attributed to Fire. Therefore, when Heat pathogen prevails, swelling occurs. This swelling moves around without a fixed location, resembling the sensation of being roasted by fire. It is also sometimes referred to as "flowing swelling" (Liuzhong). This condition arises from the interaction between Wind pathogen and internal Heat.
Xijiao Gao (Rhinoceros Horn Ointment): Treats Heat-Toxin syndrome.
Ingredients: Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn, sliced into flakes), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Shanzhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, skin removed, used raw), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, black heart removed), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, crushed, used raw), Shuodai (Datura Metel seed? Loulu Tang (Euphorbiae Fissurae Decoction): Treats Heat-swelling, carbuncle on the back (Yongju Fabei), all types of open sores, erysipelas (Dan Zhen), toxic swelling, foul flesh, red painful swollen eyes, corneal opacity (Yi Mo), and chronic sores and scabies.
Ingredients: Loulu (Euphorbiae Fissurae Radix, do not use Zhizi), Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma, alternatively Bailian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Baiwei (Clehondrae Radix, do not use Zhimu), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, roasted), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, do not use...). Another formula for applying to toxic Heat-swelling to reduce it:
Crush equal parts of Shanglu Gen (Phytolaccae Radix) and Yuntaimiao Ye Gen (Brassica campestris leaves and roots). Apply externally according to the above method; it is effective.
Another formula for treating all Heat-toxin sores and swelling using Niter and Gypsum:
Nixiao (Niter, 1 jin), Sheng Mayou (Raw Sesame Oil, 3 sheng). First boil the oil until it becomes black and pungent, then add Nixiao. Simmer over low heat until it resembles thick syrup. Store the finished ointment in fine porcelain or tile vessels.

Ingredients: Chi (Fermented Soybean, fried until smoke stops), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stamens removed, each 1 liang). Powder the herbs. Mix with pig fat rendered in the twelfth lunar month and apply. If the sore is wet, apply dry powder.
Another formula:
Use Wushanyeme (Water Bayberry Leaves) in any quantity. Boil in water until reduced by half. Pour into a tub and soak the affected area all day long.
Treat all Heat-Toxin swellings:
Manjing Gen (Vitexis Trifoliae Radix, one handful, fresh), Yan (Salt, a little). Crush and mix, apply to the swelling. Change three times daily. Another prescription uses Manjing Gen if unavailable, substituting Longkui (Solanum nigrum) is better.
Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction) (from *Shengji Zonglu*): Treats Heat-Toxin swelling. Or blisters appearing on the body.
Use 2 liang of roasted and crushed Licorice. Coarsely crush and sieve. Take 6 qian per dose. Add 2 zhan of water, decoct to 1 zhan. Remove dregs. Take one dose well after meals and one dose before bed.
Treat Heat-Toxin swelling:
Apply white duck manure mixed with egg white to seal the area. The toxin will dissipate naturally.
Treat Heat-Toxin foot swelling and pain, nearly unbearable (From *Zhouhou Fang*):
Soak in Ku Shen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) decocted in wine. Mixing with water is also acceptable.
Treat hand swelling due to epidemic Heat disease:
Soak in rice straw ash juice. This is excellent.
Treat Heat-Toxin swelling (From *Zhouhou Fang*):
Crush Arctium root and leaves and apply as a poultice. For whip marks or metal wounds, apply leaves; this prevents fear of wind forever. Also treats carbuncles, furuncles, erysipelas, and Heat-Toxins. Ming... Fan... Liang... Li Xiao...
Treat Heat-swelling:
Grind Shan Dou Gen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix) in water to make a concentrated juice and apply. Reapply when dry.
Treat Toxic Heat disease attacking hands and feet, swelling and pain nearly unbearable:
Mix Zhu Gao (Pork Fat) with Yang Niao (Sheep Urine) and apply. This is good.
Treat Heat-Toxin formula:
Take the whites of three yellow hen eggs, mix with Honey. Take one he. Recovery follows.
Treat Heat-swelling:
Crush Jin (Viola) juice and apply; this is good. Jin juice also kills "ghost toxins". Freshly extract half jin of juice. Ingestion causes vomiting.
Treat Heat-wandering red swelling:
Mix Buckwheat flour with Vinegar and apply.
Treat all Heat-Toxin swellings (From *Zhouhou Fang*):
Apply Shanglu Gen (Phytolaccae Radix) mixed with a little salt. Change twice daily.
Clear Heat, reduce swelling pressure. Dan Shi (Mineral drug) irritant Heat:
Boil and eat fresh Soybeans. Soybean juice also resolves various drugs and reduces swelling.
Treat Heat-Toxin (From *Zhouhou Fang*):
Crush Fu Ping (Lemna Minoris Herba) to extract juice. Apply thoroughly. Hot compress is also acceptable.
Treat Heat-swelling (From *Zhouhou Fang*):
Take yellow Xionghuang (Realgar) and female-colored Shiyu (Orpiment?). Heat until red. Pour hot vinegar on it. Heat and pour vinegar again. The stone becomes soft like mud. Scrape the stone powder and apply to the swelling...
