The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states that swelling caused by Qi stagnation occurs. If the Qi of the four dimensions (referring to the limbs or directions) alternates and becomes disordered, toxic swellings will arise. Generally, there are cases caused by Qi obstruction. Since all Qi belongs to the Lung, and the Lung governs the skin and hair...
Wherever pain occurs in the body, suddenly resembling a bruise from a blow, it is called "Qi Pain" (Qi Tong). The pain is unbearable, migratory without fixed location, and occurs at specific times. During the pain, there is slight heat.
**Baiwei San** (White Peony Root Powder, from *Shengji Zonglu*), treats Qi-related painful swelling. The condition resembles a tumor but has no head; it presents as flaccid swelling with unchanged color, tight skin, and pain.
Ingredients: Baiwei (*Cynanchum atratum* Root), Fangfeng (*Saposhnikovia Divaricata* Root), Shegan (*Belamcanda Chinensis* Rhizome), Danggui (*Angelica Sinensis* Root) (sliced and stir-fried with wine), Fangji (*Stephania Tetrandra* Stem), Muxiang (*Aucklandiae Radix*), Tianmendong (*Asparagi Radix*) (remove heart and roast), Wutou (*Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata*) (processed, cut open, remove skin and umbilicus).
Usage: Grind the above ingredients into powder. Take one cubic inch measure with Jiangshui (fermented grain water).
Note: This formula contains Zhishi (*Immature Bitter Orange*) but not Zhike (*Ripe Bitter Orange*).
