When an abscess (Yong, 痈) has formed pus, it is caused by cold pathogenic factors attacking the muscles, leading to the stagnation and coagulation of Qi and Blood, which results in the formation of the abscess. For any abscess that fails to heal and cannot be resolved through internal medication: if palpation reveals a firm and hard texture, pus has not yet formed; if palpation reveals a texture that is half firm and half soft, pus has formed. Additionally, if covering the area with the hand does not feel hot, there is no pus; if there is severe heat sensation, pus has formed. Whenever pus is suspected, it should be lanced immediately; otherwise, the pus will erode the sinews and bones.
